...Over the Christmas period our fridge freezer broke down. Against our better judgement, and only because we felt we really needed refrigeration with 2 babies in the house, we ventured out into the post-Christmas sales. We found a great model (which I'll review in a few months time!) in Comet. I will say, it was a great price, at only £499 for an LG all-singing-all-dancing USA-style unit. But, actually buying the thing was not easy as the store was heaving. Eventually my husband and myself managed to tackle a passing assistant and pin him in a corner where he couldn't escape! The assistant SEEMED very helpful. We pointed out the model we wanted and he looked on the computer system to see when it could be delivered, and most importantly, plumbed in, since it had an ice-maker/dispenser. Comet Clearance Store, Wembley.

Advantages: Could find a bargain
Disadvantages: What you see is what they have.

...Comet have a Clearance store at a retail park close to me ( its right next to Wembley Stadium actually). There are no elaborate displays, none of the usual inviting colour schemes or layouts, it just looks like an abandoned shop thats being used to clear stock which is basically what it is, just rows of appliances divided up into washing machines, cookers, dishwashers, dryers etc and a section for TVs and other entertainment goods. The products they sell are shop soiled, returns, refurbished and cosmetically damaged in some way. Each item has a sticker telling you what the problem is and everything you buy comes with a full 12 month guarantee. I know these are uncertain times and a 12 month guarantee is only worth anything as long as Comet stay in business, but its no different to the 12 month guarantee that comes with a full...

Refreshingly good service from Comet.

Advantages: Cheap, efficient, helpful.
Disadvantages: Small range, not enough delivery staff.

...I had not visited Comet for some years, mainly as I thought they were a bit 2nd rate, this seemed to be confirmed by reviews I have read here on Ciao and elsewhere. However, when our washer broke we decided to give Comet a try. There is a local store which has ample parking and is situated on a small industrial estate, so that was helpful for a start. We visited on Good Friday, and were pleasantly surprised at both the easy layout of the shop, and the number of staff working. The products we wanted to look at just happened to be the first display in the shop, and all the washing machines were displayed with their energy ratings, cost and whether or not they were currently in stock. After going to the counter and asking for some assistance, within seconds a really helpful guy appeared and spent some time not only explaining...

Curse the comet

Advantages: can give you encyclopaedia definitions from the comfort of the webpage you are visiting
Disadvantages: spyware, superfluous

...The comet cursor may look like a funky little dooberry so enhance your website and give it a bit of originality, but in actual fact the cursèd cursor (fine archaic orthography!) contains a nasty payload. Whilst you obliviously let the comet cursor guide people across your websites, you are actually giving a spyware application free rein to reveal your surfing habits to third parties, and pry on your internet habits. Aside from being an example of spyware, what does the comet cursor do? Well simply put, it should help improve the browsing experience of the site (its claim - Yeah right!) with "Smart Cursors" which give you definitions and references or search results, on the end of your mouse pointer. ...I have decided to finally start writing reviews again, after having yet another run in with Comet. I'd say that was about my fifth this year (separate occasions!). In the past I have bought the following items from Comet, all at very low prices: laptop washing machine vacuum cleaner mini disc player Three out of four of those items have caused me hassle. Below I tell you why. In 2002, before going out to France to study, my parents kindly bought me a laptop. It was a cheap one, the last one in the store actually, but everything was working and so we took it. The discs couldn't be found that evening, so they assured that they would be sent on during the next few days. We waited for weeks and then gave them a call about it, explaining that I would be going away and needed them in case I needed to do a system restart...

Comet? More Like Big Ball Of Rubble And Dust!

Advantages: were able to sell me a fax machine
Disadvantages: bored staff, not much choice, still flogging warranties

..., but they couldn't find it in the store room. They refunded my money but I was still without a fax machine. I needed it so all I could do was brave some more shops. I went over to Mill Hill where there's an Argos Superstore and Comet next to each other. Argos, again, didn't have what I wanted so the only other option was Comet next door. The place is the size of a small airport hangar and all the sales personnel looked very, very bored and harassed. At least I knew where to call for help if I ever needed some. The layout of the store didn't look very appealing to me. It was kind of the "stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap" kind. There was audio-visual to the left of the store. Televisions and stereo systems were cramped into a small space, the shelves too close together. It would have been difficult for two people to pass each other...

Comet's credit trap

Disadvantages: Staff fail to tell you important details of their credit schemes until the last minute.

The credit option is run through Time Retail Finance (TRF), as a subsidiary of the Kingfisher Group that owns Comet. Interest free should read more like this; Interest free* *As long as you can actually get hold of Time Retail Finance before the date which the balance has to be due to avoid them piling on 24.9% APR interest. (The company supplied no contact telephone number, Comet store had the wrong telephone number) *As long as you realise that despite what TRF tell you, the balance has to clear ten days, yes ten days, before the actual balance settlement deadline date...

Comet For Sound Advice

Advantages: Very friendly, polite staff and a well laid out store

IS THERE NO END TO COMET'S GENEROSITY?

Advantages: Exchanged faulty product, price promise works!

...I have never really been I fan of large electrical retailers, believing them to be in league with each other over prices and also guilty of sucking people into debt with deceptive finance deals and ridiculous extended warranty prices. I can't really explain why I chose Comet for some recent large electrical purchases - probably convenience, lack of available time to go checking prices elsewhere and a lower than average IQ. My first big purchase, at the end of last year, was a JVC television, video, DVD package which came with a half priced offer on a digibox. The whole package was on a special offer so I felt reasonably happy with the price that I paid.
