...Comet have a Clearance store at a retail park close to me ( its right next to Wembley Stadium actually). There are no elaborate displays, none of the usual inviting colour schemes or layouts, it just looks like an abandoned shop thats being used to clear stock which is basically what it is, just rows of appliances divided up into washing machines, cookers, dishwashers, dryers etc and a section for TVs and other entertainment goods. The products they sell are shop soiled, returns, refurbished and cosmetically damaged in some way. Each item has a sticker telling you what the problem is and everything you buy comes with a full 12 month guarantee. I know these are uncertain times and a 12 month guarantee is only worth anything as long as Comet stay in business, but its no different to the 12 month guarantee that comes with a full...

That's Comet NONsense

Advantages: Cheap, good range

...Over the Christmas period our fridge freezer broke down. Against our better judgement, and only because we felt we really needed refrigeration with 2 babies in the house, we ventured out into the post-Christmas sales. We found a great model (which I'll review in a few months time!) in Comet. I will say, it was a great price, at only £499 for an LG all-singing-all-dancing USA-style unit. But, actually buying the thing was not easy as the store was heaving. Eventually my husband and myself managed to tackle a passing assistant and pin him in a corner where he couldn't escape! The assistant SEEMED very helpful. We pointed out the model we wanted and he looked on the computer system to see when it could be delivered, and most importantly, plumbed in, since it had an ice-maker/dispenser. Refreshingly good service from Comet.

Advantages: Cheap, efficient, helpful.
Disadvantages: Small range, not enough delivery staff.

...I had not visited Comet for some years, mainly as I thought they were a bit 2nd rate, this seemed to be confirmed by reviews I have read here on Ciao and elsewhere. However, when our washer broke we decided to give Comet a try. There is a local store which has ample parking and is situated on a small industrial estate, so that was helpful for a start. We visited on Good Friday, and were pleasantly surprised at both the easy layout of the shop, and the number of staff working. The products we wanted to look at just happened to be the first display in the shop, and all the washing machines were displayed with their energy ratings, cost and whether or not they were currently in stock. After going to the counter and asking for some assistance, within seconds a really helpful guy appeared and spent some time not only explaining...

Curse the comet

Advantages: can give you encyclopaedia definitions from the comfort of the webpage you are visiting
Disadvantages: spyware, superfluous

In the past I have bought the following items from Comet, all at very low prices: laptop washing machine vacuum cleaner mini disc player Three out of four of those items have caused me hassle. Below I tell you why. In 2002, before going out to France to study, my parents kindly bought me a laptop. It was a cheap one, the last one in the store actually, but everything was working and so we took it. The discs couldn't be found that evening, so they assured that they would be sent on during the next few days. We waited for weeks and then gave them a call about it, explaining that I would be going away and needed them in case I needed to do a system restart...

Comet? More Like Big Ball Of Rubble And Dust!

Advantages: were able to sell me a fax machine
Disadvantages: bored staff, not much choice, still flogging warranties

...My fax machine imploded one Saturday. Luckily I was at home when it happened. I could smell something burning, melting or whatever that smell is when plastic starts emitting little plumes of smoke, then there was a little fizz, a plop and all the lights went out. Well, they would have gone out had it been night time, but it was the middle of the day. But it blew a fuse. First call of action, unplug offending item, then restore electricity in the flat and thank my lucky stars that nothing had a chance to catch fire. Phew, it could have all ended in tears, or worse. So, off I went in search of a new fax machine. yes, there are still some people who need this old fashioned type of device. I started off locally at Argos. Well I had success by finding a lower spin service model at £149.00 on the Comet website and was about to place my order when I spotted "AUCTION" tab on their website and started to investigate further. WHAT A GREAT SITE. I surfed around finding top brand named machines, some were returns, some with minor damage, a few with a minor part missing. There were end of line items, display items and many boxed with no damage at all. All goods are new and carry a full 12 months manufacturer's gaurantee. The credit option is run through Time Retail Finance (TRF), as a subsidiary of the Kingfisher Group that owns Comet. Interest free should read more like this; Interest free* *As long as you can actually get hold of Time Retail Finance before the date which the balance has to be due to avoid them piling on 24.9% APR interest. ...I have recently persuaded myself to return to comet and give them a second chance after a terrible experience in the past! Unsurprisingly they still seem to be as dysfunctional as ever. Why do they insist (as if we didn't know.) in trying to tell complete bul***it about the products in store? Do they send the staff on non training days in order to wipe their brains of any useful information? I am a reasonable guy and appreciate that staff can only know so much about the products, but to make up information.....? I was trying to buy a digital photo frame for my girlfriend. I knew which one i wanted and with the help of an assistant managed to eventually find the item in the store! i was advised to buy a specific memory card for the frame and a card reader/writer as i had no other devices compatible with that make. IS THERE NO END TO COMET'S GENEROSITY?

...I have never really been I fan of large electrical retailers, believing them to be in league with each other over prices and also guilty of sucking people into debt with deceptive finance deals and ridiculous extended warranty prices. I can't really explain why I chose Comet for some recent large electrical purchases - probably convenience, lack of available time to go checking prices elsewhere and a lower than average IQ. My first big purchase, at the end of last year, was a JVC television, video, DVD package which came with a half priced offer on a digibox. The whole package was on a special offer so I felt reasonably happy with the price that I paid.
