Comic Relief 2005

Advantages: Helps loads of people, Lots of fun
Disadvantages: None.

...Every year Comic Relief holds a show on BBC1 to raise money for elderly and homeless people which will all be explained in this review. ~~How Comic Relief Raises Money~~ Comic Relief creates a ''red nose'' every year which costs £1 to buy from Sainsburys and Oxfam. Every Pound spent a red nose goes to Comic Relief. They also create TV Programmes to raise money as well. This year they created Comic Relief Does Fame Academy. You phone up to vote for the winner and 15p from the call goes to Comic Relief. Also the MAKEpovertyHISTORY wristbands donate to the earnings. ~~Who Comic Relief Helps~~ All the money goes to help elderly people who are victims of abuse and homeless people out in Africa. The money goes to help get those people of the streets and to find them a family and a home. The money for ederly people helps them get...

Comic Relief to the rescue of the elderly

Advantages: you can wear your funny nose with pride
Disadvantages: Serious messages are intertwined with the fun

...This year?s Comic Relief (2005) will soon be upon us (March 11th) and we will all be having fun, wearing large hairy noses and doing stupid things to raise money for charity. This year the main theme is one that is very close to my heart ? elder abuse. I am writing this to raise awareness. The run up to Comic Relief has already started with the wonderful portrayal of elderly life in Britain today by Richard Briers, in 'Dad'. This was shown on BBC1 at 8pm on Wednesday night and was a stark reminder to everyone of just how the elderly are treated in British society. A burden. So elder abuse, what exactly is it? Abuse of the elderly is endemic in our life. Elderly people are not given much respect, filtering down from the government to the man on the street. The media often take cheap shots at them in dramas, quiz shows...

Comic Relief without the Comics it Seems

Advantages: Does such good work in raisining money for the charity
Disadvantages: Makes you sick of the sight of the red noses sometimes!

...When Lenny Henry first started Comic Relief, it was I understood a way of raising money through comedy turns etc. Unfortunately I think some of the comedy has left Comic Relief. A considerable number of celebrities have indeed been involved over the years - including John Cleese, Billy Connolly, Whoopie Goldberg, Ruby Wax, Dawn French, etc etc etc. It was a fantastic idea and has raised a huge amount of money ALL of which I believe goes to help children in particularly in the UK and abroad. There is no doubt that so many lives have been improved and people helped by the work of the charity itself. Basically there are various "turns" and sketches on the main Friday night show, which has several presenters throughout the evening. Leading up to this show are various activities during the preceding week. Unfortunately...

Its comical

Advantages: excellent fund raising
Disadvantages: None

..., and by the time I had gone to bed they had raised well over £10.5 million. The charity is quite unique in as much as that it supports charities in the UK as well as abroad. And watching some of the 'trailers' for the good causes, were extrememly touching. Only the most hardened person able to ignore the pleading. One woman of just 45 years old suffering from Alzimers disease told her story with sheer braveness it was touching. Another 'trailer' told of a group of teenagers who had HIV, and it made you realise how lonely they are. Most of them had lost their parents also. (Both stories in this country). There was also touching stories from abroad. The genicide in Africa several years ago, and how the people left alive had coped, even though fighting HIV through being raped! Comic relief doesn't aim to distress anyone, just bring...

Comic Relief this definitely is!

Advantages: Great characters, hilarious scripts, fab guest stars
Disadvantages: Only 35 minutes!

...Catherine Tate, I think, is one of the world's most funny female comedians, and hit the big time with her self titled comedy show The Catherine Tate Show. It began on BBC2 in 2004, and was an instant hit, so much so that she was invited to perform at the Royal Variety Performance as her most known character Lauren Cooper. She also made an appearance at Comic Relief of 2006, and I think it was the success of this, and her second series, which led to the commission of her inclusion in Comic Relief 2007, to a much larger degree than before! For me, Catherine Tate made the whole Comic Relief show of 2007. I watched the whole thing to make sure that I caught all 4 sections of the show! I was pleased to see that they had made a DVD of the Comic Relief specials, selling only on Amazon for a fiver, with 3 pounds going to Comic Relief. So you...

This Comic Relief Virgin is no more

Advantages: Funny, moving, entertaining
Disadvantages: Films were repeated too often

...I am no longer a Comic Relief virgin. I am slightly ashamed to admist that last night was the first time I watched it, and I am so glad I did. Even though I went to bed around midnight my husband taped the rest of the show for me and I watched it this morning. It was an excellent show and raised a staggering amount of money (around £22 million - although that total is set to double). The comedy was brilliany, my favourite clips were the top 50 comedy moments and parts of Graham Norton (who I have never watched before). Big Brother was superb, I have watched avidly all week and I was so glad that Jack Dee won (as I voted for him to win). The short films made that served to remind us all why we were pledging money were truly heart breaking, even managing to move me who is notoriously hard hearted when it comes to charities, (in my...

Comedians try to relieve the horrors

Advantages: use of humour to get money for a good cause
Disadvantages: The suffering of those that need help

...I don?t know if this should be put into this particular review section or maybe should be put into a shrinks portfolio? but as this does somehow nudge on the Comic relief Red Nose theme I thought I?d write this here anyway. * WHAT IS COMIC RELIEF..? Comic relief is a fundraising idea from the brains of Lenny Henry and his fellow comedians during 1985. It originally started, in a small camp in Sudan, with the intentions of opening up the plight of people living in poverty in the UK and Africa. It has now become a fund raising event, held every two years, hosted by the comics and celebrities who are most popular at the time, and is aimed at getting as much money as possible for the underprivileged. Up to date the charity has managed to raise around £400 million (including 2009) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * MY...

Comic Relief

Advantages: A complete original
Disadvantages: Some may find it difficult to enjoy a film that flies in the face of cinematic conventions

...As chat up lines go ?You might as well know right off the bat, I had a vasectomy? is pretty out there, but then Harvey Pekar isn't your average leading man. 'American Splendor' is almost a biopic, the story of the life of Cleveland everyman and VA file clerk Harvey Pekar (Paul Giamatti). Harvey is not the kind of man people usually make movies about, Harvey is a despondent, borderline obsessive compulsive, curmudgeon, he collects records (and previously comics), he is generally unremarkable. One of the few things that gives Harvey joy in life is the hollow thrill of a garage sale, the possibility of finding a prized 78 for 25 cents. It is at one such garage sale that Harvey meets Robert (Bob) Crumb (James Urbaniak), soon to become the acclaimed author of such comics as ?Fritz the Cat?, having a lot in common (records and comics mainly...

And what about Billy Connolly

Advantages: The reasoning behind it
Disadvantages: That no matter how much is raised there will still be a need to raise more

...In case someone may have been on a different planet on Friday 16th March 2001 - it was red nose day - when a bunch of celebs make fools of themselves in aid of charities worldwide with one third of monies staying within the UK. So what did you do? Personally, l donated money at work, l bought the pin, l bought persil, l gave money at Sainsbury's and l rang up to vote Chris, Anthea & Vanessa out of the big brother house!! I also watched the telly on Friday nite! The show began at 7pm with the excellent Ant and Dec hosting the first hour and a half. We had the "Who Shot Phil" sketch - with a cameo appearence from Jerry Hall - it made me smirk! Stephen Fry playing "Wonkey Donkey" ( you need to be a SMTV fan!) and Westlife. At 8.30 the Comic Relief grand master Lenny Henry and Zoe Ball took over the hosting and we then saw...

£22 MILLION TO GET YOUR KNICKERS OFF

Advantages: A great night's TV, a load of money raised for good causes
Disadvantages: Kept me up too late!

...Well, once again, another Comic Relief extravaganza is over – and what a tiring one it was! We were captured early on in the week with the wonderfully addictive Celebrity Big Brother, which was reason enough to tune into the Friday night-long special. But this year’s television bonanza in aid of charity seemed the best one yet. I stayed up until 1:30am, so it must have been good! The whole evening was, as is the usual format, a mixture of comedy with a whole host of star names, interspersed with informative films to illustrate why the money is needed and the sort of things it is being used for. I always find the factual reports uncomfortable viewing, especially with the kids in the room, asking what AIDS and prostitution are. But I think it is also good for them to see poverty and how some children live literally in...
