Advantages: Good photo quality - standardized batteries and memory type
Disadvantages: Noise at ISO 400 and above

Focusing can be automatic (9 points are available) or manual. You can decide to have fixed focus position or use the intelligent camera system. The picture format like all other compact digital cameras is 4:3 instead of the 3:2 of SLR cameras. Review of Canon PowerShot A590 IS

Samsung Vega 140s 35mm P&S compact camera.

Advantages: Low price for high quality and capabilities.
Disadvantages: Too big for shirt pocket.

...I have built a small but representative collection of these P&S cameras because they can be had for peanuts these days. This little beauty has all the rest beat, and the others like Nikon, Pentax, Canon are good, but not as good as the Samsung. The Schneider lens needs no introduction, I have been using this glass in various cameras for the past half century, and it is IMHO at least the equal of other much more expensive lenses. This camera is just about perfect in every possible way, it powers up rapidly so you don't miss these elusive and rare opportunities to capture memorable images which will always be in focus and perfectly exposed. The design of the camera is also well thought out so it looks and feels good in the hand. Your next camera

Advantages: Small, light, easy to use, nice features
Disadvantages: APS developing is expensive

...a small CR2 battery and so doesn’t add that much to the carrying weight. The camera (I bought the “photo-kit”) comes complete with a 25-frame film, battery and carrying case. In fact, everything you need to get it up and taking photos immediately. Another thing – having just taken possession of my first set of pictures, I have to say that I don’t think the image quality is as good as 35mm cameras. Now, that’s not to say that it’s poor because it isn’t (I was perhaps over critical when studying the photos and comparing them to older shots I had taken, and this was my first time using this camera), but I feel that my old 35mm Kodak compact (RIP) would have taken slightly better pictures, although it had nowhere near the amount of features that the Canon has. Review of Canon IXUS M-1 SET Compact Camera

Does any other compact have this zoom?

Advantages: 200 mm zoom, good design and looks
Disadvantages: Pictures can on occasions lack sharpness, can be difficult to use

...modes will give better picture quality. This is primarily because of the poor instruction manual which does'nt make it particulary clear on how to use the other modes successfully. I don't believe the lens quality of this camera is quite as good as my previous Cannon, and I have tried all the modes. Generally though I would recommend this camera as it packs an almighty punch with its zoom and good looks...the flash even pops out of the side when you turn it on!! If you are after a serious photographers tool buy an SLR as they produce significantly better picture clarity and you can pick them up for not more than the RRP of this camera...though for the sheer compactness and zoom of this camera its a close run thing. This is also one seriously funky camera!!...

The best camera of them all

Advantages: takes great quality pictures, well made, durable
Disadvantages: more complex to use than modern fully automatic. No longer made

...It may be a few years old now but if you can get your hands on the Canon AE1 Program you will have one of the best all time cameras ever made. It quite simply takes the perfect picture. I recently took mine into a photographers for a service and clean up, the proprietor commented on the excellence of the camera and offered to buy it off me there and then, even an offer of £350 could not persuade me to part with this camera. It is an SLR type 35mm semi-automatic camera over which you have full control of appeture, shutter speed, film speed, flash etc, you are in total control, unlike todays modern fully automatic jobs. Interchangeable lenses make this a superb professional camera, even my brother has offered to buy it from me (he's a professional photographer by trade), but I simply won't be parted from it. If you can pick one up...

A water resistant camera that isn't yellow!

Advantages: Pictures from where you have never taken pictures before.
Disadvantages: "APS" = Ain't Perfect Sharpness...

...The blurb for this camera announces "outstandingly designed" and for once it isn't just hyperbole. It's lightweight and small enough to take anywhere without inconvenience, it can be immersed in water, sand, snow, mud or beer with no ill-effects, it's easy to use even if you have gloves and goggles on, and it comes without the social stigma of a canary yellow case. There is no doubt that some serious thought has gone into this camera, it really is designed to be used in places where you would not normally be taking your camera along. How it works: The Japanese genius responsible for this design (bless his chopsticks) has cunningly located the film and battery access points in a waterproof compartment. Review of Canon IXUS X-1 Compact Camera

The best camera I have ever used

Advantages: Size, portability
Disadvantages: Too easy to forget to change format of photos back

...I was given this camera as a gift about two years ago and can honestly say I have never used a better one... In all the time I have had it, it has been so 'idiot proof' that I have been unable (despite valiant attempts!!) to take a 'bad' photo... It is sooo small that it fits neatly into handbags, pockets etc, and yet has an amazing array of features.... I love the fact that the flash takes only a few seconds to load up, so you can take several photos in quick succession... I also love the zoom lens feature that is very easy to manipulate and use... I also like the warning lights that warn you if you are taking the photo wrongly.... Again, before I had this camera, I had quite a few run-ins with cameras, ie, I would spoil rolls of film trying to load them it, and also load used film in and take an entire roll of 'double' photos...
