Compaq Armada 1530D - Old but cheap as chips
Advantages: cheap to buy used, robust
Disadvantages: Heavy, slow, small hard drive
...The compaq Armada 1530D laptops have been out about 5 or 6 years now, first entering the market back in 1998, so its worth considering this throughout my review; this laptop is nothing compared with todays machines.
I bought the laptop used about one year ago, I needed a simple machine for word processing at home, and decided it would be nice to socialise whil working (now I can sit in front of the telly with the family while I do my work) At £200 it was a bargain, the truth is they are even cheaper on ebay now, I've seen them go as little as £100.
But of course, your not going to get an amazing machine for under £200. These laptops really are basic and have minimum specs. The speed is just 16MB RAM, which is minute compared with the speeds of 512MB RAM in the latest laptops. The harddrive is less than 2GB in size, incredibly...

Compaq Presario 700: First Time Buyer?
Advantages: Decent for a first time user
Disadvantages: Potential crashes, over heating
...-^- Introduction -^-
As a member of Ciao I?ve been looking to do reviews on objects I?ve had for a while. To try and really give an in depth review over things. Although I know the Compaq Presario 700 may not be on sale anymore this could be a review for people wanting to get it second hand from someone or buying on website etc.
-^- Background Information -^-
I bought my laptop in September 2002. I?ve always wanted a laptop just for the actual feeling of owning one. However I went halfs on it with my parents as it was a necessary for me to have seeing as I was also starting university. In total the price was £900. Pricey it seemed but I wasn?t going over £1000. The actual one I wanted was sold out and I really didn?t want to leave without one so I took the Compaq Presario 700. In total I?ve had it for just over two years now...

Sailing with my Armada
Advantages: light & inexpensive
Disadvantages: a mouse with a mind of its own
...I've owned my Compaq Armada 7400 for nearly a year now. I bought it second hand off ebay because I needed a computer that was portable and light with a decent amount of grunt (and that wasn't too expensive) to take with me when traveling overseas. (They are currently selling for about £150 – 200 on ebay – obviously prices vary depending on the optional extras and the competition!)
The specs of my system are:
400 MHz Pentium II
128 MB RAM
10 GB Hard Drive
DVD-ROM Drive
Internal 56K modem
In addition to the above I purchased an Ethernet card for home networking as this did not come standard with the machine.
The computer I bought didn't come with a Floppy Drive either (although you can get them with floppy drive built in) and I have considered getting one since as I don't have a desk top computer to download...

COMPAQ ARMADA! I see no ships
Advantages: Light weight tiny Laptop
Disadvantages: As it 2 or 3 years old a bit slow
...We bought the Compaq Armada M300 as a Christmas present for our 13 year old daughter, mainly for 2 reasons, to run Microsoft Encarta to enable her to do her HOMEWORK! And to run the Sims, she?d been asking for this for about 2 years and we were loathed to load it on the family?s computer for fear that nobody else would get a look in!
The Computer, we found on E-Bay for £145 plus £18 postage, we were not particularly looking for a Compaq, but rather any Laptop that had a processor that met the Sims minimum requirement ( that being PII 300).
The Compaq far surpassed that! And so we went ahead and made the purchase via Paypal on Sunday night and much to our delight it arrive at 7.30am on Tuesday morning.
The only problem, now was that the standard Compaq Armada comes without any external Drives and so we set about finding a CD...

Unstable - I Would Avoid
Advantages: Fast, sleek looking, DVD player (Win98), good driver support
Disadvantages: Unstable, feels delicate not robust
...Working in technical support for a major healthcare company, I get to see a lot of Armada M700s. Compaq have admitted that faulty batches were sent out but this machine seems to be very unstable. It looks very smart with its black case (has a PIII 650MHz processor and 64MB RAM), blue mouse pointer in the middle of the keyboard and the newer ones coming with a DVD/CD drive (but you must have Win98 to use DVDs). As this is a notebook, the floppy drive and CD drive are interchangeable. If you want to use them both at the same time a parallel cable is provided so you can run the floppy drive from the printer port. The screen is quite large for a notebook and the display is clear. Sound output is good and it comes with an internal 56K modem and ethernet network card which frees up your PC card slots for other things. Overall, a nice...

I will never buy a Compaq again
Advantages: Inexpensive compared to similar spec'd machines
Disadvantages: Trackball mouse inefficient and not easy to use, build quality terrible, heavy with provided battery
...Having purchased my Compaq Armada 110s based mostly on budgetary constraints, I suppose I have to blame it on myself that this machine disappoints. I have owned the Armada for a year and a half now, and have experienced many problems both hardware- and software-related. To dismiss the software complaints, my laptop came installed with Windows Millenium, to which I have had to add several patches to make the machine work consistently. Compaq support people were reasonably helpful about these problems, although utlimately a self-help approach was the rule (they directed me to downloads on the web to try to fix the problems myself, and blamed it on the Microsoft software). The main problem in this department was to do with the display adapters, meaning that my screen repeatedly shut down for no apparent reason. Having 'fixed' this...

no problems so far - seems like an v.good notebook
Advantages: inbuilt modem, networking, usb, infrared support, light, fast
Disadvantages: no touchpad on this model, down arrow key, typing comfort
...I got my M700 at the companies reccomendation - normally I would have chosen a dell but so far I've been very impressed. My machine was the 700 Mhz with speedstep and I went for 196 Mb Ram and the DVD option (which I haven't used yet) I'm running Windows 2000 and quite a lot of software including things like pc anywhere SAP and SQL server. as standard it comes with a nipple not a touch pad and although its quite straightforward I normally use a mouse. The screen (14.1) is very clear and the casing seems strong -(although a problem I and a few others have noticed is the down arrow key often comes loose - this can be fixed with some jiggling but it is annoying) The keyboard isn't bad but sits quite far up making it slightly unwieldy to use, The internal network and modem have both worked brillantly first time and been entirely hassle free...

Never mind HP heres Compaq
Advantages: Cheap Starter PC
Disadvantages: Poor build quality
...The Compaq Presario 700 series is one of their biggest selling "home" laptops, how do I know this I here you ask, well I worked for Compaq on their Presario Technical Support line.
The 700's are a good laptop, if your new to the PC scene, but don't expect great things from them. They have an average spec for the price, but the build quality is not the best in the world.
The software bundled with the 700's is fine for the majority of users (XP Home, MS Word, MS Works) amongst others. Although I would recommend ditching Works and getting a full version of Office as it offers much more flexibility.
As I said earlier the spec is average, and fine for most beginners, however the quality of the components leaves a lot to be desired. The battery is prone to not holding any charge (which is covered under the first years warranty...

Star Trek Armada - Engage this game
Advantages: Game play, Story line, Graphics
Disadvantages: None
...The story line of Star Trek Armada is where the Borg have come to take over the Alpha Quadrant and gain the Omega particle.
The player gets to choose from four campaigns which are the Federation, Klingon, Romulan and of cause the Borg. Each campaign is meant to be happening at the same time as one another.
The Federation campaign begins with the USS Enterprise E going into an almost destroyed section where starbases are damaged and ships are uncrewed. So from this the player needs to gather up the ships for use until an unexpected attack by borg vessels. From here on out the mission is to destroy the Borg. I think this mission is the easiest to play however as you pass each mission it does get harder and harder. This mission also has the USS Preminition introduced where it has travelled back into the past to warn the Federation...
