COMPAQ ARMADA! I see no ships
Advantages: Light weight tiny Laptop
Disadvantages: As it 2 or 3 years old a bit slow
...We bought the Compaq Armada M300 as a Christmas present for our 13 year old daughter, mainly for 2 reasons, to run Microsoft Encarta to enable her to do her HOMEWORK! And to run the Sims, she?d been asking for this for about 2 years and we were loathed to load it on the family?s computer for fear that nobody else would get a look in!
The Computer, we found on E-Bay for £145 plus £18 postage, we were not particularly looking for a Compaq, but rather any Laptop that had a processor that met the Sims minimum requirement ( that being PII 300).
The Compaq far surpassed that! And so we went ahead and made the purchase via Paypal on Sunday night and much to our delight it arrive at 7.30am on Tuesday morning.
The only problem, now was that the standard Compaq Armada comes without any external Drives and so we set about finding a CD...

My Xmas Suprise!!
Advantages: everything!!
Disadvantages: a bit slow for playing the action games!
...For Christmas this year I was expecting a PS2 as I wanted to have The Sims and my parents wouldn?t let me have it on the PC downstairs. So Christmas morning I got up at 4:30 and when I opened the Compaq Armada M300 I was absolutely flabbergasted!!
The reason they said they got it for me was because I could do my homework on it as well as The Sims. (I got The Sims triple deluxe!) And if I had The Sims on the PC downstairs no-one would get a go, which is probably true!
~~~THE LOOKS~~~
This is a very small black laptop with a touch pad mouse, which I found very difficult to use to start off with, a greyish tinted keyboard with an 800x600 TFT active matrix screen. When it hasn?t got the mobile expansion unit (MEU) attached it?s a very ultra thin! Less than 1inch! There are 2 on/off buttons one by the screen inside the laptop and one...
Compaq Armada 1530D - Old but cheap as chips
Advantages: cheap to buy used, robust
Disadvantages: Heavy, slow, small hard drive
...The compaq Armada 1530D laptops have been out about 5 or 6 years now, first entering the market back in 1998, so its worth considering this throughout my review; this laptop is nothing compared with todays machines.
I bought the laptop used about one year ago, I needed a simple machine for word processing at home, and decided it would be nice to socialise whil working (now I can sit in front of the telly with the family while I do my work) At £200 it was a bargain, the truth is they are even cheaper on ebay now, I've seen them go as little as £100.
But of course, your not going to get an amazing machine for under £200. These laptops really are basic and have minimum specs. The speed is just 16MB RAM, which is minute compared with the speeds of 512MB RAM in the latest laptops. The harddrive is less than 2GB in size, incredibly...
Small but perfectly formed
Advantages: Compact, fast, great screen
Disadvantages: No FDD, short battery life
...MHz processor, which is faster than my desktop PC, and has the same amount of RAM (128Mb). This makes the laptop speedy fast, although some of you with spangly new computers may think I'm barking for thinking this is fast!
There is an on-board sound card, which is loud and acceptable for playing CDs. The graphics for those interested is via an 4Mb ATI Rage LT Pro, which may or may not be a good thing (too technical for me!) but does it's job very nicely.
There is also a network card and 56K modem on board, and if you want to go wireless, there's the empty expansion slot I mentioned previously, so that covers all communications.
On top of all that, there's the opportunity to plug an external monitor in, 2 USB ports (1 on the expansion unit) and the usual variety of ports and plugs you would expect. There's also an infrared device...
Sailing with my Armada
Advantages: light & inexpensive
Disadvantages: a mouse with a mind of its own
...I've owned my Compaq Armada 7400 for nearly a year now. I bought it second hand off ebay because I needed a computer that was portable and light with a decent amount of grunt (and that wasn't too expensive) to take with me when traveling overseas. (They are currently selling for about £150 – 200 on ebay – obviously prices vary depending on the optional extras and the competition!)
The specs of my system are:
400 MHz Pentium II
128 MB RAM
10 GB Hard Drive
DVD-ROM Drive
Internal 56K modem
In addition to the above I purchased an Ethernet card for home networking as this did not come standard with the machine.
The computer I bought didn't come with a Floppy Drive either (although you can get them with floppy drive built in) and I have considered getting one since as I don't have a desk top computer to download...
Compaq Evo N600c little soldier!
Advantages: Durable, loads of fixes on the hp site, quite nifty for its age
Disadvantages: just getting on a bit
...disk can be removed without removing the chasis etc etc.
With a simple cooling system (As in one way) cleaning the gunk out of the cooling passages is easy with a domestic vaccum.
It boasts quite a few specifications, which still sound ok, even though its massively out of date:
* Mobile Intel Pentium III-M 1.2 GHz processor
* 14.1-inch SXGA+ or 14.1-inch XGA display
* 4.8 lb/2.2 kg weight
* 256-MB (133 MHz), upgradeable to 1024 MB
* Up to 40-GB SMART hard drive
* 32 MB graphics intergrated
* User removable hard drive
* Mini PCI modem and integrated NIC
* Full-size keyboard
* Infra Red unit fixed on the front
* Over 3.5 hours of battery life (Normal conditions)
* Magnesium display enclosure
* Common docking solutions across Armada E and M and most Evo series notebooks...
HP Compaq Evo n600c
Advantages: CHEAP, well styled, good for travelling
Disadvantages: bit old, without maintanance can become slow.
...I am writing this review to inform the good people that good things in life can come cheap, my n600c is the best purchase of my life so far.
As i got this laptop for about 80 pounds i decided to upgrade it with some more RAM at the moment im running an Intel Pentium III m and Microsoft XP with 767mb RAM. the total cost of this laptop with upgrades was 110 pounds, considering this has nearly 1GB of RAM it is perfect for browsing the web and is very well at doing basic functions, Browsing the web is very fast and with the right browser and settings multi tasking is very good considering it has a singular core.
The speed for the specs overall is good, the sound and video card are not spectacular but obviously can still play music and video at a basic level (youtube, itunes etc) it is great for going anywhere, its relatively small...
Apple PowerBook G4 12.1" TFT
Advantages: very functional and portable, fantastically made and stylish
Disadvantages: gets hot with long intensive sessions of work
...I have had my 12 inch powerbook G4 for about 5 months now and it is FANTASTIC. it is very attractive looking and is the best made laptop ive ever owned. It is very small and very portable, it is flawlessly engineered with a silver aluminum body and as such is very robust and very light.
i bought off ebay and it came with the latest version of the mac operating system, and an upgraded 1.3 GhZ processor. It is very fast and does everything i want it to do.
the screen is fantastic and crystal clear, great for watching dvd's and films on aswell as working and surfing the web. The built in speakers are very good and clear, The volume controls run along with the function keys at the top as well as volume control and the F8,9,10,11 and 12 are programmable to help speed up work and switch between windows.
It comes with a standard single click...
I will never buy a Compaq again
Advantages: Inexpensive compared to similar spec'd machines
Disadvantages: Trackball mouse inefficient and not easy to use, build quality terrible, heavy with provided battery
...Having purchased my Compaq Armada 110s based mostly on budgetary constraints, I suppose I have to blame it on myself that this machine disappoints. I have owned the Armada for a year and a half now, and have experienced many problems both hardware- and software-related. To dismiss the software complaints, my laptop came installed with Windows Millenium, to which I have had to add several patches to make the machine work consistently. Compaq support people were reasonably helpful about these problems, although utlimately a self-help approach was the rule (they directed me to downloads on the web to try to fix the problems myself, and blamed it on the Microsoft software). The main problem in this department was to do with the display adapters, meaning that my screen repeatedly shut down for no apparent reason. Having 'fixed' this...
Le Diva Computer
Advantages: Looks
Disadvantages: Wiping The Buger!!!!
...I bought the Le Div@ (as it is spelt) about two years ago from pc world. I wanted a computer that I could take around with me and keep as a desktom I no that may sound a bit precise but the Le Diva was the computer for me. The one pictured is the exact replica of the one I ve got (there is a le diva 2 now.)
In the discription it says that it has 12gb which is a pile of rubbish mine has 20 gb lol.
The computer does have 650 MHz and 128Mb ram. It reads DVD's and CD'S perfectly no problem with that. I got mine with Windows ME (but it says Win 98.) The monitor is 15" TFT but its a bit bulky. (and heavy as you might expect)
I have a Broadband (wireless) connection through a Belkin network card. But it does have a modem slot on the powerpack (I suppose they could not fit it on the monitor.)
The computer has a microphone slot...
