...We have 800 of these and so far they have been great. Reliability wise we have only had a few problems over the last 2 years where a couple of power supplies have popped. Do not be scared of the small form factor - these boxes can still hold extra stuff. We had quite tight requirements for the boxes we needed. Basically, we wanted to add an IDE Raid card, an extra hard disk, and 1GB or RAM. All of this was possible inside this tiny box. The floppy can be removed as not many people use them these days, and in its place you can install another hard disk. The case does have the opening for the floppy on the front, but it doesn't look bad. As I mentioned in the title, the box can be tight for cabling, but you'd expect that for the size. The only annoyance with the box is the mechanism for lifting the drives. Removing the case...

Compaq Evo N600c little soldier!

Advantages: Durable, loads of fixes on the hp site, quite nifty for its age

Evolutionary or not?

Advantages: Cheap, Small, Effective, Simple...

...So after reviewing the awful Acer 3610 laptop my mum bought, I decided (whilst I'm hiding from my crazy neighbour) I'd review the computers at my Uni. The first one I settled on doing was a COMPAQ Evo, with a COMPAQ 5500 monitor from the library. The nice silver and black design looks appealing when you first set your eyes on it, and it's also smaller than most desktops I've seen (though I think I've seen smaller Dell's in the past), so will quite happily fit most places. In comparision to other objects, it's about the size of an X-box (original one), which may have been big for a console, but is small for a desktop PC. Now onto the actual review, nothing seems terrible about it (though please note I am only doing work on it, as opposed to playing Doom 3 or Half-life 2, which I doubt it could support). It seems to run pretty quickly...

Compaq Evo N800 lasts and lasts and lasts

...Nearly 4 years ago I bought myself my first well known laptop after 3 lots of non branded ones. There is a world of difference and with careful selection I ended up with the Compaq Evo N800. What a break that turned out to be. First things first - the screen is superb with top laptop resolution rather than the crappy max of 1280xnothing offered by most other models out there even today. 1400 x 1050 gives too small a font some might say. Load of rubbish. This screen has the best viewability I've ever witnessed by which I mean that it's easily readable from any angle in front of the screen. No, it's not widescreen but don't let that put you off. Battery time is a solid 2-3 hours depending on activity and even after 4 years of the same battery it's still the same. Compact Compaq

Advantages: Reliable, quiet and space-efficient.
Disadvantages: Not much room for expansion.

...there's nothing stopping you. The price point may be anywhere in the £500-£700 range depending on where you buy, so it's not going to upset your accountant either. All of this along with Compaq's highly reputable support makes it eminently suitable for corporate users. It's not aimed at gamers, it's a business machine and does exactly what it would say on the tin if it came in one. I'm sure there are many who prefer the flexibility of a big-box PC, I spent years upgrading my previous machines at almost bi-monthly intervals, but right now I'm perfectly happy with my Evo. Of course it depends what you're looking for, but if that's reliability, portability and Compaq quality you don't have to look much further....

...I'd always built my own computers in the past so when it was time for an upgrade I started looking around for more parts. I tended to stay clear of pre made up computers as there were always bits in them that were either A- not good enough or B- I wouldnt need at all.
