Just think of all of the things you can do with a compact computer at the palm of your hands. Write documents and notes when you need to, particularly great when organising your life to put it simpler. I mean, it's far better then a diary because if you're anything like me, you probably end up misplacing your diary and I wouldn't dare think of losing my pocket PC. You can easily access the internet from wherever you are, if you need to look up tube/train times at last minute, you can. If you perhaps want to just research something at a particular moment for example in a pub quiz - I'm not saying you should cheat at pub quizzes or anything - well they're easy anyway...

The Compaq iPAQ H3850 - Not just a pretty face

Advantages: Excellent colour screen and MS Windows compatibility
Disadvantages: Convergence of mobile phones and PDAs may render it obsolete. Need to back it up frequently.

Combine that with 64MB RAM and 32MB ROM, an excellent 65,536 colour screen (offering a resolution of 240 x 320), a headphone socket and microphone and an infra-red port and you soon realise that its beauty is not just skin deep (a full specifications listing can be found at http://www.compaq.co.uk/products/ipaq/pocketpc/h3850/specs.stm). ...OK ? here goes... I have, arrayed in front of me, a Palm V and a Compaq IPAQ 3850. I am crying quietly. Why? Because having been quite content with my Palm V for several years I recently convinced myself that I needed an IPAQ. What a prat. To exacerbate matters, I didn't just settle for a basic unit. Oh no, I had to go the whole hog and get the SatNav jacket and all the full nine yards didn't I? After a brief (and I MEAN brief) honeymoon with the thing I have come to the conclusion that the IPAQ is twice the price, twice the size, twice the weight, twice as bug-ridden and has half the battery life of the Palm. As if that wasn't enough, it has an operating system which, like its big brother Windows, needs to have a lie down every now and again. To accuse it of being underdeveloped would be to do an injustice to underdeveloped...

Great IPAQ!!! :-)

Advantages: Easy to use, Looks nice, Expansion packs available, Can be used for GPS or MP3 player.
Disadvantages: Battery life can be quite low if the screen backlight is on, Expansion packs are expensive.

...I am very pleased with my Ipaq. My IPAQ was running Windows Pocket PC (ce 3.0), which is fully of handy features, however recently I decided I wanted to try installing Linux on it and see how it goes. So with help from my mate I installed GPE Linux, and it is currently working fine. Linux comes with more features than Windows Pocket PC, and I would recommend installing Linux on your Ipaq only if you have experience with Linux. Overall I love the Ipaq, I think it looks great, and it has a clear screen. Although the battery life can be a bit short, I usually don?t have any problems providing I remember to charge it up every other night! I got my Ipaq from ebay fairly cheap, so I would recommend having a look on there for one if you interested. BUT if you want expansion packs for your ipaq, you?re usually better off buying an Ipaq...

IPAQ is a dinosaur

...I have had several Ipaqs which I primarily used as a portable diary so it would sync my diary with the one on my desktop which my secretary organised. It meant that if I was out of the office I could make an appointment knowing what was already in the diary and when I get back I would just plug it in to its docking system on the desk, the diary would update and she would immediately see the appointment I had put in. It uses active sync. Great. And the idea of having Windows functionality in a palm top was once a real advance. But then the blackberry appeared. Same functionality as the IPAQ, but with internet access, email etc, so they surely do so much more? Things have moved on. Mobiles phones such as the Apple iphone, and all sorts of other gismos now have the Wi-Fi, high speed mobile data connections and GPS that I used to...

...Last February, I ditched the Palm V and bought the Compaq iPaq 32Mb. I wanted more memory space and I liked its looks, feel and potential. I have now been using for 6 months and can report the following pros and cons. The iPaq is first of all a substantial investment but at the time was the best around so I took the plunge. The feedback I get from colleagues with Casio and HP Pocket PCs has backed up this opinion so far. It's high resolution colour screen makes using it as a work tool very easy and the Windows layout is familiar and functional. The ActiveSync software allows the user to easily synchronise with his/her desktop PC. The in-built IrDA modem allows access to the web and other networks very possible using your own mobile although speed is poor. GPRS might change this. IPAQ 3970, very smart piece of kit

Advantages: Excellent screen, good amount of ram
Disadvantages: Occasional problems synching via cradle, no CF slot

...I got one of these about three months ago and have been using it daily ever since. The main reason I opted for one of these is the quality and brightness of the screen, it is by far the sharpest one I have seen. I also wanted the features of pocketpc2002 and at least 64meg of ram. The 3970 has 64 meg ram, 48 meg rom of which 16 meg is available for storage. It comes with bluetooth built in which I have been using with a GPRS account on a Sony Ericcson moby. This works very well - I use it very frequently for realtime stock quotes, emails etc, get good fast access. The battery life could be better...and as with other ipaqs there is no way of replacing the battery. It has an SDIO slot so there is opportunity for expansion. But it does not have a built in CF slot. The other main contender for my money was...

It has a 64,000 color screen which makes the colors vibrant, crisp and clear. The battery is not removable and replaceable because it is internally built in.
