Just think of all of the things you can do with a compact computer at the palm of your hands. Write documents and notes when you need to, particularly great when organising your life to put it simpler. I mean, it's far better then a diary because if you're anything like me, you probably end up misplacing your diary and I wouldn't dare think of losing my pocket PC. You can easily access the internet from wherever you are, if you need to look up tube/train times at last minute, you can. If you perhaps want to just research something at a particular moment for example in a pub quiz - I'm not saying you should cheat at pub quizzes or anything - well they're easy anyway...

The Compaq iPAQ H3850 - Not just a pretty face

Advantages: Excellent colour screen and MS Windows compatibility
Disadvantages: Convergence of mobile phones and PDAs may render it obsolete. Need to back it up frequently.

...**Update made on 08/08/02 at end** There?s no doubt that when it comes to looks the iPAQ H3850 is the classiest PDA available. Combine that with 64MB RAM and 32MB ROM, an excellent 65,536 colour screen (offering a resolution of 240 x 320), a headphone socket and microphone and an infra-red port and you soon realise that its beauty is not just skin deep (a full specifications listing can be found at http://www.compaq.co.uk/products/ipaq/pocketpc/h3850/specs.stm). The 3800 series is the latest incarnation of Compaq?s iPAQ series of PDAs. The other model in the series is the H3870 - the only difference between the two is that the H3870 is Bluetooth enabled - which is great except that Bluetooth devices won?t be widespread for a while yet so the extra cost (about £60 on average) is hard to justify. I didn't want to pay the extortionate amount requested by the dealer for it to be fitted as standard and so opted to make fullest use of my iPaq 3850 and purchased this product from the gps warehouse - £290 inc VAT. The software loaded easily via the activesync connection, which you must have to complete the task and comes with your iPaq anyway, and I loaded the maps onto a 128Mb smart disk I had previously used for storing some music files. I selected the UK maps plus France for the occassional booze crooze and took it for its first test run. The kit slots easily into the windscreen...

...OK ? here goes... I have, arrayed in front of me, a Palm V and a Compaq IPAQ 3850. I am crying quietly. Why? Because having been quite content with my Palm V for several years I recently convinced myself that I needed an IPAQ. What a prat. To exacerbate matters, I didn't just settle for a basic unit. Oh no, I had to go the whole hog and get the SatNav jacket and all the full nine yards didn't I? After a brief (and I MEAN brief) honeymoon with the thing I have come to the conclusion that the IPAQ is twice the price, twice the size, twice the weight, twice as bug-ridden and has half the battery life of the Palm. As if that wasn't enough, it has an operating system which, like its big brother Windows, needs to have a lie down every now and again. To accuse it of being underdeveloped would be to do an injustice to underdeveloped...

This was just mildly impressive four years ago

Advantages: All software on one CompactFlash card
Disadvantages: Very poor GPS lock. Maps now out of date. Connections fail.

...OK ... so I'm a little late with this review. I've just upgraded FROM one of these devices, to a Bluetooth GPS system with separate GPS software. Anyway, it's rather unlikely that you will be buying one of these new now. And if you ARE considering it, either new or second hand, then please read the following experiences of this system first! The first day this system arrived, I was so excited. GPS Navigation in my humble Ford Focus. I already owned an iPAQ, so no charging was necessary. In fact, the navigation device ran from the iPAQ's own power source, be that the internal battery, or from the car's cigar lighter. I spent a while mounting the suction device to the windscreen, so that I could get the best view whilst driving. It needed to be out of my field of vision, but easy to see during a sideways glance. Great IPAQ!!! :-)

Advantages: Easy to use, Looks nice, Expansion packs available, Can be used for GPS or MP3 player.
Disadvantages: Battery life can be quite low if the screen backlight is on, Expansion packs are expensive.

...I am very pleased with my Ipaq. My IPAQ was running Windows Pocket PC (ce 3.0), which is fully of handy features, however recently I decided I wanted to try installing Linux on it and see how it goes. So with help from my mate I installed GPE Linux, and it is currently working fine. Linux comes with more features than Windows Pocket PC, and I would recommend installing Linux on your Ipaq only if you have experience with Linux. Overall I love the Ipaq, I think it looks great, and it has a clear screen. Although the battery life can be a bit short, I usually don?t have any problems providing I remember to charge it up every other night! I got my Ipaq from ebay fairly cheap, so I would recommend having a look on there for one if you interested. BUT if you want expansion packs for your ipaq, you?re usually better off buying an Ipaq...

IPAQ is a dinosaur

Advantages: Good screen and processor for a small thing, connects to PC easily
Disadvantages: No phone, so limited connectivity

...I have had several Ipaqs which I primarily used as a portable diary so it would sync my diary with the one on my desktop which my secretary organised. It meant that if I was out of the office I could make an appointment knowing what was already in the diary and when I get back I would just plug it in to its docking system on the desk, the diary would update and she would immediately see the appointment I had put in. It uses active sync. Great. And the idea of having Windows functionality in a palm top was once a real advance. But then the blackberry appeared. Same functionality as the IPAQ, but with internet access, email etc, so they surely do so much more? Things have moved on. Mobiles phones such as the Apple iphone, and all sorts of other gismos now have the Wi-Fi, high speed mobile data connections and GPS that I used to...
