...Our DIY story ------------- After painting our living room half and half we needed something to break up the two colours, but what? We didn't want yet another border in our house and a nice crisp line was a no go especially on an embossed wall paper. Solution dado rail. As per usual we went full steam ahead and made do with the tools we had to get the job done. Big mistake! The first piece was quite easy using a wooden mitre box to cut the 45 degree angle and a saw but as to what type of saw it was, I have no idea, I think I will have to ask Handy Andy. Piece of cake we thought that was until we had to cut a new angle right on the end of the dado rail for the next piece to slot in behind. My husband did the sawing whilst I held it in place which proved difficult and after several pieces cut wrong and angles slightly...

Yay - tool time

...Everyone knows that there is nothing worse than trying to do DIY with cheap tools, as the finish is usually poor. Not the case with this saw. Although it is at the cheaper end of the mitre saw market, its build quality and ease of use are excellent. To bore you with statistics, it has : 1.7kw motor, which spins at 5,000 rpm with no load. 10 inch blade Side bars Clamp The 1.7kw motor is unusually large for a 10 inch saw, they are normally used on the 12 inch saws, which are too big and bulky for average DIY jobs. Cutting corners effectively

Advantages: Cuts perfect mitres every time, excellent value for money
Disadvantages: Rather bulky and heavy to store

...I always used to hate cutting corners - probably because I am not very good at it. However at last I have found the perfect solution and at a great budget price as well. A few weeks ago when I was browsing through the Screwfix catalogue (yes I know I lead a sad life!) I spotted an offer for the Titan PSM2541 10" Compound Mitre Saw on sale for just £29.99. I am not sure it would have caught my attention quite so much if I hadn't been planning to lay a laminate wood floor in my kitchen and dining room but as I had a job in mind it certainly looked like a great deal. Personally if I am having a laminate floor I prefer to replace the skirtings at the same time as I think it gives a better finish. As one of the oldest pubs still standing in Cambridge, it has a long history of owners and functions (including a brewery and a pool hall!).
