...PC World, the best computer shop ever! Massive choice, great sales staff. OK, stop screaming at me for being a madwoman and read my little story! ~~~ Fabulous Store ~~~ I once worked for PC World, in their Lakeside store. It was fabulous. I was actually there on opening day (read on to find out what I was doing). The store was then privately owned by a polish immigrant called Jan Murray and there were only two branches. These shops were an answer to a prayer for many PC buffs. Opening day was fantastic, extra staff were brought in from the Croydon branch and we were all rushed off our feet. I spent most of the day standing by the front door giving out free burgers! Another colleague spent all day running backwards and forwards to McDonalds to keep me supplied. The customers were happy and there was an amazing amount of return...

The best computer shop around

All of these items are very competitively priced- usually the cheapest around, but if they aren?t the cheapest they would usually be only a couple of quid- if that dearer. They buy components in bulk and due to their few shops have few overheads and so can keep their prices low. Another service Regency Computers offers is a pc health check and upgrade service. They will service your computer, check and remove viruses as well as give advice on any upgrades for only £39.99 per computer. If you have one of these great value services then they will also install any hardware upgrades bought from them for free. I clearly asked him if my files could be copied but he never said anything about installing the operating system at an extra cost! I left the store in the end paying over £200 for what was meant to be a simple ram upgrade. The staff had been rude, hadn't told me in full what I was buying and for how much. They seemed to want me to buy more of their products then to get my simple ram upgrade. That was back in 2001. I returned to the shop in March this year. PC world...an Employees view!

Advantages: Huge amount of choice, competitive prices, friendly staff

PC World ---- Poor Customer Service World

Advantages: They aren't too expensive
Disadvantages: They have appalling customer service

...My husband brought a computer from PC World just over a year ago now. It cost £399 which seemed like quite a good deal. It came with everything we needed and even had free Norton Spyware thrown in for a year. It was on Windows Vista and had all the latest software on it. We also bought a lot of accessories for it, the printer costing £200, a wireless mouse and keybour, a scanner/photocopier. I'd like to say everything was perfect, we never had any problems and we all lived happilly ever after... but I can't. The day after we installed everything I went to use word for my uni work and found it wouldn't open, in fact none of the microsoft software would open. I used the library instead, not very convienient but oh well and we just used the computer for going on the internet which we did quite a lot seeing as my husbands work requires...

The Old Computer's Tale

Advantages: On a cold day it was nice and warm in the store.
Disadvantages: You can keep warm for a long time whilst trying to sort your problems out.

The Presario, they say is a very reliable model and Compaq have an excellent name so it must be his and her fault. He has to be sent out to sit in the car to calm down, and she continues the argument. Finally they agree to exchange the computer. She shows the salesman the one she’s interested in, and asks if he’ll turn it on. It won’t work. The salesman wiggles all the wires and finally picks it up and shakes it. Finally it shudders into life. They decide that it’s the model they want, but they want a new one, not the one on show. They haven’t got one. The salesman points out the benefits of taking the one in the shop - it’s on special offer, with £50 off. She points out that the “£50 off”...

...I would not suggest a trip to pc world in basingstoke. Its the worse customer service i have ever known, and think they only make money with first time buyers as you get put off straight after if to use this store. my experience was i went to buy a pc at my local pc world in reading, they didnt have the one i wanted in stock but the chap was helpful and rang a local ish branch to see if they had it as it whoed on the screen they did. he rang them and asked them to get it ready as will be there in 30 mins to buy the pc in basingstoke. so i get there, no one on the shop floor i see the one i want and just want to buy it and get going as whole mission taking a long time and it was getting late. eventually found a staff member who had the stench of cannot be bothered and realy made me feel like i was infringing on her time and being...

PC world of rip-offs

Advantages: Warm on a winters day
Disadvantages: Overpriced, poor staff knowledge, poor levels of stock

...about value pc's on ebuyer which they bought and have been happy with (i gave them my email address to help them out). If you are a novice where computing is concerned avoid PC world, they seem to prey on people's insecurities of computng. Most independant computer shops are much more helpful and will usually build you exactly what you want for a lower price. They offer some services like transfering data from one computer to another and virus scanning. A Technician at a store explained some of the processes to me and made them sound very complicated and with the slightest error could cause huge amounts of damage. They were once again taking advantage of insecurities using computers. I was quoted around £40 to transfer 1.5 GB of data from a desktop to a laptop. At no point did they mention using a 2 GB USB data stick which can be bought...

PC World-My experience

Advantages: Extensive ranges of PCs, laptops, printers, software, peripherals
Disadvantages: Quality of service depends on the person who will serve you.

...PC World is Britain's largest specialist chain of computer superstores. It belongs to Dixons Group (which has under its umbrella companies such as Currys, The Link , Dixons ?of course, and other companies. It also has the 15% of Kotsovolos S.A , the leading electrical retailer of Greece!! Which is a massive company for the Greek reality! I bought my cooker from there when I was living in Greece.) I am referring to the background of the PC World because that was one of the things that made me to choose them. ( I have to support them as they support the Greek economy?everything is connected you know!!) I have been in 5-6 of them around the country and they differ only in size.
