CONGO

Advantages: Adventure
Disadvantages: accents

...I have watched this movie many times based on a novel by Michael Crichton. This film can be described as slightly strange I am still some times left thinking what I liked about the film. It has a straight forward plot It is a story of an African mountain gorilla called Amy who's been taught sign language by a young scientist and is being returned to the jungles of the Congo during which that cross paths with a research team sent in to the jungle of Africa to find a rear diamond, as you can imagine there are lots of obstacles in the African jungle. There are all types of animals one type in particular, its some kind of super gorilla. This film has a very fictional and adventurous feel to it some of the accents leave much to be desired, the usual over emphasis an American doing an English accent! This is a very light hearted watch...

Do the Congo!!!

Advantages: Great Value
Disadvantages: Not great for washing hair

...Tesco Congo (For Men) - 2 in 1 Hair and Body Shower Gel **WHAT IT DOES** It is a 2 in 1 hair and body shower gel, which will give you an invigorating shower experience. You can wash you hair with it as well as washing your body it can do two jobs at once. **PACKAGING** It comes in a thick black plastic container, which is very durable. He lid is click open and closed which you have to squeeze the bottle to get the gel out. It is shaped for your hand, which I think, is very cleaver with 4 groves for fingers and a curve for your thumb on the other side. This is handy in the shower, as it is easy to drop bottles when they are wet, this gives you extra grip. One the front there is a label, which has the Tesco logo in silver and a large sign saying for men. There is bright green blobs (all different shades which looks eye...

Congo

Advantages: Its a fun film to watch
Disadvantages: Tim Curry's accent

...Based on the book by Michael Crichton, Congo is the sort of film you should only watch if you're not looking for realism, but just a fun action romp for an afternoon's video viewing. The basic story is about an expedition that goes into the jungles of Africa, supposedly to set free an ape reared by a Univerity and taught to sign. Unbeknown to the University professor and his ape is a big bad company wanting to get its hands on some priceless diamonds. When they find the diamonds they also find they are protected by a bunch of killer apes. Well, I did warn you that it was a fun action film!!! The cast are largely unknown, apart from Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) and Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Show) - however, Tim Curry does indeed get the oscar for the worst ever Romanian accent on film!!! Generally the film is OK - but if you...

Pongo in the Congo

Advantages: Easy to lather up, smell fantastic.
Disadvantages: only available at tesco.

...This shower gel is amazing. Every morning I feel as if I am starting another jungle adventure. There are actually four different types of this particular shower gel, but congo is the one you want. It smells great. It lathers up easily, and can be used on hair and body so you can even use it instead of shampoo. The best thing about this product though is the outstanding value for money. You can pick up a 250ml bottle for just 66 pence. I would even go as far to say that if I had the choice I would take the congo, instead of anything else. Even Lynx shower gel doesn't match this stuff. It comes in a simple black bottle with 'FOR MEN' up the middle and green coloured leaves alongside it. Giving it that jungle effect. There are also handy grips on the side of the bottle so that when you are in the shower it does'nt slip out...

At Least We Survived Alive

Advantages: Most landings are completed safely
Disadvantages: almost everything else

...Legend has it that when an aircraft becomes too sick or too old to manage on it's own, the other aircraft in the herd sense its distress. At an appointed hour they accompany it on a very long journey to the hidden aircraft burial grounds somewhere deep in the jungle. That hidden aircraft burial ground is called: Kinshasa Airport. The Kinshasa airport sits on the outside of Kinshasa, about a 1/2 hour drive from the city center. It has been a very, very long time since I have seen an operational DC-8 aircraft. But, sitting on the tarmac surrounding the terminal I saw one...along with many other aging aging 727's, DC 9's, and lots of older Russian aircraft ... many of which are still flying in and out of the interior cities of the DRC. Some, however, seem to be loosing parts as they sit on the tarmac. Upon arrival...

Blood River - fascinating history and travel in the Congo

Advantages: Plenty of information conveyed in this book
Disadvantages: some might find it a long read or not be interested in the subject matter

...Blood River is the most compelling, memorable, educational and insightful book I have read for a long time. It is in the travel category here, and yes it is an account of the author's journey down the Congo river, but the book is also a throughly researched and passionate expose of the troubled history of the country now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I was alternately gripped, horrified, astounded and shamed by this book. Gripped as the journey that the author made in 2004 to " the most troubled region of the world's most troubled continent" in the words of the author himself, was both amazing and insane, and shamed as at times I felt ignorant in the face of the information conveyed. According to the BBC website 5 million people have died in the Congo in the past decade. This helps to explain the title...

Review of Blood River: A Journey to Africa's Broken Heart - Tim Butcher

Rumble in the Jungle!

Advantages: Indepth, engaging, and a well- balanced message
Disadvantages: Come on! its Crichton! how can there be disadvantages?

...Anyone who started reading Crichton in the early Nineties could be forgiven for thinking that this man wrote about life and death situations involving unnatural animals, in exotic tropical settings. No. Like Jurassic Park, Congo is set in a tropical location, this time the Congo rainforests (hence the title) as oppose to a tropical island. The book deals withunnatural animals slaughtering our intrepid team, but the similarities stop here. Congo is excellent. It has it all, a staple of Crichtons works. It has science, humanity, carnivosous animals, the futility of technology against nature, and a rip- roaring plot to boot. Congo deals with a company named Earth Resources Technology Services (ERTS), and one of its team that went missing while searchign the Congo for a valuable blue diamond. The last ERTS hear of the team is from a video...

Great Creature Feature

Advantages: Action Packed, Great Effects
Disadvantages: I dont find any

...I really couldn?t care less about what people say about this movie because in my opinion this is one of the best movies of its genre. Starring Ernie Hudson (Captain Munro), Laura Linney (Dr. Karen Ross), Dylan Walsh (Dr. Peter Elliot) and Tim Curry (Herkermer Homolka), this movie gives you a fare share of thrills and chills with an unimaginable enemy and state of the art technology. All the building blocks for a good movie? YEP!! Dr. Karen Ross works as a high post employee in a multi billion communication technology firm called Travicom, lead by a relentless and ruthless CEO R.B. Travis (Joe Don Baker), he sends a team of researchers into deep into the Congo to salvage some special high mineral diamonds which would help make lasers, and be invaluable to Travicom?s revenue. The team sent is lead by Dr.Karen?s fiancé and they do find...

The BBC At Its Natural Best

Advantages: photography, narration, music, accessability of the film crew
Disadvantages: only three episodes

...Attenborough, and quite rightly so. Even though he is touching 70 his enthusiasm to explore, to investigate and to dice with death sometimes, leaves lesser & younger mortals to shame. However, the BBC now offers us a new Treat on the Block, "Congo". The first of only three episodes was broadcast on the 30th January 2001 on BBC2 at 9pm. There is no on-screen narrator this time, just 3 or 4 young men with their cameras, kit bags, tents & a huge sense of charisma and enthusiasm journeying up the huge Congo river in central Africa. We're introduced to some truly wonderful sights, including the "Bangweulu swamps" covering a huge area (approx 100 x 100 square miles) of marshland, wildlife and of course thick pea-green swamps where we're introduced to a rather bizarre bird called the "Shoebill" owing to very large shoe-shaped bill. Another...

The third biggest war in the twentieth century

Advantages: It's been mostly resolved now
Disadvantages: Why wasn't it resolved sooner?

...government that could only come with deposing Mobutu. As the rebels pushed out of Orientale and the east, into the rest of the country, Mobutu realised that the Zairian army and Rwandan Hutus were not strong enough to halt the advance, and decided to resort to a method that had served him well in the past - hiring European mercenaries. Unfortunately for him, this still failed to halt the rebellions' advance, and with no foreign countries sending troops or help, Mobutu was, for the first time, utterly helpless. By late Spring 1997, the Banyamalenges' were in charge of the east and south of Zaire, and had taken Kinshasa soon afterwards. Mobutu was exiled to Morocco, and died of prostate cancer in September 1997. Mobutu's Leadership During his unchallenged stint in charge of the Congo, or Zaire as he called it, Mobutu built up a massive...
