Yewdale Hotel , Coniston : Food and drinks review.

Advantages: Could not be better positioned at the heart of Coniston.
Disadvantages: Service was slow but friendly.

...We recently spent a few glorious days walking in the Lake District and had forgotten just how beautiful it is there. Based in Coniston and renting one of the Coppermines cottages we had plenty to do during our short stay including walking up the Old Man of Coniston - thats a mountain by the way! - We also spent one day walking from Lake Coniston up into the hills to Tarn Hows which is a simply lovely mountain lake surrounded by hills and woodland. On the way back it started to rain just as we got into Coniston and so we ducked into the Yewdale Hotel and decided to have a couple of drinks and dinner while we waited out the rain. This review is therefore for the restaurant only. The hotel is a Victorian stone and slate building right at the centre of Coniston in a prominent position near the bridge and over the road from...

Coniston

Advantages: Chocolate Tiffin, Real Ales, Peace and Quiet
Disadvantages: I only get to go about 4 times a year

...My review is specifically about the gorgeous village of Coniston. My fiancee and I go up to Coniston about 4 times a year and have been doing for nearly five years now, so it can't be bad! The village of Coniston is situated at the North-western tip of Coniston Water, the lake where Donald Campbell famously crashed and died while attempting to break the water speed record. Unlike its more overstated neighbours (Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside), Coniston is almost unspoilt by tourism / commercialism, but that's not to say it is not a tourist resort. The local community have managed to retain the natural beauty of the town even in the face of all the visitors it receives. The roads are still narrow and winding. The buildings are constructed mainly of slate and stone - not a new-build in sight! And the water is free...

Review of The Lake District (England)

There are bluebirds over the Old Man of Coniston

Advantages: Single varietal bottle conditioned beer from a Lake District microbrewery. Now easily available at your local supermarket
Disadvantages: A touch bitter for my delicate palate - but that's only a personal view

...Once again I have ventured to the beer shelves of the local supermarket. I have passed over this, to Tyneside at least, relatively local brew before but this week I decided that Bluebird?s hour had come. I have had only a fleeting acquaintance with the far north west of England. Sure I have been impressed with the scenery in passing but I am neither walker or boater. Judith on the other hand is a creature of The Lakes. Given half a chance she would buy a cottage and spend every weekend there. It was a girlhood dream to open a tea shop serving home made cakes and scones. My personal ambitions are rather further flung and warmer but the future is where the stuff of dreams can come true. THE BREWERY The Coniston Brewing Company was founded by Ian Bradley and Rob Irwin. It is located in the picturesque town on Coniston in...

A beautiful walk with stunning scenery

Advantages: Lovely scenery, safe walking, clean and tidy
Disadvantages: None for us

...which were joined together in the 19th century when a lot of the trees surrounding the tarn were also planted. The climb up to Tarn Hows would be a stiff one if you chose to walk it, but once up there the walk round the tarn is fairly flat. When the Tarns and the surrounding area came up for sale in 1929, they were bought by the author, Beatrix Potter who then sold the half containing Tarn Hows to the National Trust, and bequeathed the rest of the estate to the Trust in her will. Where is it? Tarn Hows is situated in Cumbria and is roughly between Coniston in the south and Ambleside in the north. Just turn off the A593 at Coniston onto the B5285, Coniston to Hawkshead road and Tarn Hows is well signposted from there. How do I get there? Obviously you can get there by road as I have just described or you could catch the Coniston...

Langdale Pikes Report

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, fresh air...
Disadvantages: None

...Suddenly, you find yourself in the Lake District? You are heading along the A592 with Windermere to your left. You look to the north and in the distance you see a curious mountain formation. Two hill tops strangely positioned against each other. What is that? You wonder. It is ? or should I say they are - the Langdale Pikes. And today, constant reader, I am going to take you by the hand and guide you across this beautiful terrain. Hope you have brought your boots and some food and water. Best make you sure you have your waterproofs too, it can rain a bit here, as I am sure you might know. We move onto the A593, heading towards Coniston. But before Coniston we turn right for Dungeon Ghyll (B5343), where our destination is. If you have arrived here not knowing where the Lake District is, then I shall briefly tell you that the Lake...

Walking, Cycling, The Arts, something for everyone.

Advantages: Something for everyone
Disadvantages: You have to be relatively fit to enjoy it.

... Grizedale Forest. Location Grizedale is located between Esthwaite Water and Coniston. Parking always used to be a problem here, but they've created a larger car park a couple of years ago, so chances are you shouldn't have a problem now. To reach the forest from the North you need to take the A591 to Ambleside, leave Ambleside A593 to Langdale/Coniston. First left B5286 to Hawkshead. Bypass Hawkshead follow B5286 south then first right at tourist sign "Theatre in the Forest", follow to Grizedale approx 2 miles. Or from the South M6 junction 36 take A591 first exit A590, Barrow follow A590 past Newby Bridge Havethwaite Crossroads, right turn, tourist sign "Grizedale Forest Park", follow signs for Satterthwaite/Grizedale north. During the high season (Easter to Oct/Nov) you can reach Grizedale via the Cross...

I'd like an old man please.

Advantages: its real ale
Disadvantages: ease of getting drunk

...I'd like to start with a huge thanks to stevethesleeve because I had no idea you could get this stuff reliably outside the lake district - I will now be hunting for it. Please read his op - it is very useful, very informative. I'm going to try and offer you some other information in the hopes of complimenting his work..... Bluebird Bitter, as the title suggests, comes from Coniston in the lake district, and is named after the craft that crashed in the lake some years ago... long story. Currently the company make 2 ales, which are for sale in their pub in Coniston. The thing about real ales is that they don't tend to travel well, and they really are best the closer you are to the source. So for best effect, go to Coniston, sit in the shade outside the Bull on a warm summer's day, and sample the beer. The brewery is at the back...

Cottages in the heart of the Lakes

Advantages: Beauty,peaceful and spacious.
Disadvantages: the uncontrollable weather

...fantastic cottages, from one bed roomed to mansion size eight bed roomed. Short breaks and week long holidays lets, they also offer some great late deals and bargains. It's headquarters are in Carlisle, with two letting offices in Windermere and Keswick, both are staffed by friendly and helpful people, if a little too laid back, (but what can you expect from living in the lake District). The cleanliness of the lettings I have holidayed at is fantastic, so I assume that all the domestic staff are professionals and all accommodations are cleaned thoroughly. I have used cumbrian cottages several times and have stayed at several different holiday cottages. They have lets in Ambleside, Bowness-in-windermere, Windermere, Coniston, Hawkshead, Grasmere, Keswick, Ullverston and many other locations around the Lakes, offering a variety of holiday...

This Priceless Beauty

Advantages: mountains, lakes, fresh air, lots of pubs
Disadvantages: None

...Nothing can compare to the Lake District. You can use as many metaphors as you like, churn out a million similes if you wish, but will you come close to describing this thing of beauty? Of course, you have guessed it? I love the 'Lakes' and have been venturing there for almost ten years. However this last few years has seen less and less visits due to having toddler in the house, but I ain't complaining. So what does it have to offer? Well, let us have a look at the actual lakes first. There is the very popular Windermere at the foot of the district, frequented by all and sundry, beautiful but over crowned in summer. Then by contrast you have daunting Wastwater, overshadowed by the brooding Scafell range, whose ripples send shivers down your spine. And you have Ullswater in the North East, Coniston in the south Bassenthwaite...
