Michael Connelly has been attracting fans by the droves with his hard-boiled, edgy thrillers. A former crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times, Connelly combines a poet's ear for language with a deep understanding of the criminal mind to create dark, dramatic stories that raise the thriller genre to a new level. In Blood Work, Connelly introduces a new character, Terry McCaleb, who was a top man at the FBI until a heart ailment forced his early retirement. Now he lives a quiet life, nursing his new heart and restoring the boat on which he lives in Los Angeles Harbor. Although he isn't looking for any excitement, when Graciela Rivers asks him to investigate her sister Gloria's death, her story hooks him immediately: the new heart beating in McCaleb's chest is Gloria's. As McCaleb investigates the evidence in the case, the apparent randomness of the crime gives way to the unsettling suspicion of a twisted intelligence behind the murder. Soon McCaleb finds himself on the trail of a killer more horrifying than any he ever encountered before. ... less

Penzler Pick, January 2000: once again, one of the brightest stars of the New Generation of mystery writers doesn't disappoint. Here is a story that, seemingly without effort, calls to mind such masters as Elmore Leonard, Donald E. Westlake and Lawrence Block, with just enough Raymond Chandler. Michael Connelly temporarily abandons his LAPD homicide detective, Harry Bosch, in favour of the law's other side--the underworld. In the bright sunshine of Los Angeles, dark impulses and shadowy evildoers appear even more menacing, and their stop-at-nothing violence even more ghastly, to a young woman whose maternal desires serve to put her squarely in their sights.Cassidy (Cassie) Black has been working at a Porsche dealership; as an ex-con, she's keeping as many secrets as she possibly can. Besides, she knows all too well that there are as many suckers with warped egos buying expensive cars as there were marks to rob back in Las Vegas, where she and her love, Max, were set up. The worst part of the fall they were forced to take was that it involved Max plunging to his death from an open window and Cassie getting the rap for the push. Now she's out on parole and trying to stay within comfortable eye-shot of the daughter she bore--her only memento of the adored Max--and whom she gave up for adoption. Asking nothing more than to be able to see her from a distance and know she's safe, she suddenly must come up with a considerable sum of money to be able to follow the little girl to Europe where her family is planning to move. That kind of money can only be realised quickly by means that she has supposedly foresworn. The situation becomes even more heart-pounding when she and a psychopathic enforcer wind up on opposing sides of a two-million-dollar package. Brought up by a magician father, the crafty, creepy Jack Karch is the sort of primal-slime villain who can use his sleight of hand to amuse a child one minute and deliver a murderous blow the next. How Cassie struggles to stay one step ahead of him--while watching her allies fail at the same game--is what makes this tense, clever narrative ultimately sentimental in the best way. As a formula, the "tables turned" plot can never be beat, while Michael Connelly proves once again that neither can he. --Otto Penzler ... less

Sequels are all about expectations fulfilled: The Narrows is at once a new novel about Michael Connolly's series hero Harry Bosch, cop turned private eye, and a sequel to The Poet, his most highly regarded stand-alone thriller. Harry is investigating the death of Terry McCaleb--the former FBI man who dominated in Blood Work; Rachel Walling has been recalled from administrative exile when the Poet, her former boss Backus, starts killing again and sending taunts intended for her and McCaleb (who he also trained). Connolly is very good on the psychology of investigation and on the essential voyeurism involved in contemplating someone else's mental processes. This is a book with a strong sense of place--Connolly can find menace anywhere from the desert of Nevada to the half-hidden dangerous LA river that gives the book its evocative title. If the book has a weakness, it is in the personal interactions of the two detectives--both Harry and Rachel act according to scripts we know well from previous adventures. Nevertheless, The Narrows is one of America's major thriller writers at the top of his game.--Roz Kaveney ... less

...I've only recently been getting into crime novels, and decided to pick up a Michael Connelly book from the library after he was recommend to me. Connelly is a big name in crime writing, and I now I can see why.
Echo Park is part of Connelly's Bosch series, clocking in at number 12. Having not read any of Connelly's work before, let alone any previous books in the Bosch series, I thought I...

Another great Connelly read
Advantages: Great compelling read

...underworld of the sex industry intriguingly intertwined with corporate espionage.
Connelly never fails to deliver a page-turner, and Chasing The Dime doesn't disappoint. Written in his usual easy-to-read style, this book grabs you from the first paragraph and it's the first novel in a little while that I have found difficult to put down at the end of the evening, turning through its 310-odd pages...

The Narrows by Michael Connelly
Advantages: Provides big payoffs for long-time Michael Connelly fans.
Disadvantages: Contains major spoilers for earlier books.
...of the books from which the characters were taken, I thought THE POET was a more face-paced thriller that contained much edgier drama, while the previous Harry Bosch book LOST LIGHT gave us a more introspective analysis of the Bosch persona, which epitomises the Harry Bosch series, while also providing a heart-pounding thriller.
An unusual but effective feature employed by Connelly was to shift from...
