Based on an improbable but true story, CoolRunnings concerns the Jamaican bobsled team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Director Jon Turteltaub (Phenomenon) does a fine job with both the absurdity of the situation (the athletes had never even seen snow) and the passion behind it (their desire to compete and win). John Candy, in one of his last roles, is touching as a disgraced coach who seizes the opportunity to work with the Jamaicans as a chance for redemption. The bobsled scenes look good and the races are exciting. The climax, which is entirely unexpected, takes the film to a wholly different level, even if events in the story don't quite match the facts. --Tom Keogh
Advantages: Great true story Disadvantages: Nothing
...Cool Runnings is a Disney film based on a true story which many people including myself can watch over and over again throughout its life on the video shelf. The story is about 4 Jamicans and their coach and there amazing progress and determination to get themselves into the Winter Sports Olympics for the first time ever in 1988 in Calgary, Canada.

Advantages: It's a lot of fun Disadvantages: Predictable Disney fare
...I've never really been a fan of Winter sports, so the entry of a Jamaican bobsleigh team into the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary pretty much passed me by. What I am a fan of, however, is a decent comedy film, so the release of "Cool Runnings", supposedly based on the story of the Jamaican Bobsleigh team, was unlikely to do the same.

Advantages: Extremely funny Disadvantages: None at all - Great film
.... The double gold medalist in bobsleigh at the 1968 Winter Olympics was Italy's Eugenio Monti.
Consistently funny and entertaining, Cool Runnings is a pefect example of a well-done feel-good live-action Disney film.
Video - As one of Disney's very first DVD releases, Cool Runnings is presented in non-anamorphic widescreen. While the DVD undoubtedly would have benefitted from 16:9 enhancement, video...
