...'s "The Birds". Then I realised why the door was so battered - they were pecking away at it. We had to suffer this early morning wake up call every day. But they also took to pecking and battering the door at mealtimes as well. Because there were no net curtains, they could see us eating inside and it was driving them crazy. They would peck at the door for ages trying to get in. If I was in the kitchen, they'd congregate infront of the kitchen window and squawk noisily. When we ate in the lounge, they pecked at the door, even when we drew the curtains to stop them seeing in. There was just no peace from the pesky birds, but the site did nothing to deter them. Being from Cornwall, we're used to seeing seagulls daily, but these birds were pretty much a nuisance. The birds weren't the only noise to contend with. The chalet was only a few...

Review of Devon (England)

A balance between good and bad.

Advantages: Buses are more frequent than they used to be and new routes have been introduced.
Disadvantages: They often break down and aren't waterproof in the rain!

...First provide a wide range of bus networks around Devon and Cornwall. As I live in Cornwall I will refer to these services in my review. As a general rule, the buses are dirty and fares have gone up in recent years. However, reliability has increased somewhat, and the frequency of some buses have been increased. Another point to consider is that Cornwall seems to be the 'bus graveyard' of England, most service buses are over 20 years old, this means breakdowns are frequent- not good if you are travelling to Lands End on a 2-hourly bus, or in my case, late for an A-Level exam, as my bus broke down on the A30! On balance, First serves rural communities well and tries to provide a good service with limited resources. Buses are also a good option for tourists, I would not recommend driving cars through the narrow streets...

...Looe in Cornwall was our destination for our vacation. It was close by 2100 hrs, and we made our track down the lane towards the local beach, Millendreath. At first it seemed ok, not overly steep. As we proceeded, I tried to envisage the steepness of this so called descending trek. I needed to set my mind at rest, so I stopped a passer by; to acquire more Gen on the local beach, Millendreath. He confirmed what the farmer's wife had told me earlier. Its 2 miles from here, the man answered, but it's very steep nearer the bottom. We carried on and sure enough it did begin to descend dramatically. It got steeper and steeper and the trees became more and more dense, I felt this could be the spanner in the works. Appledore - a jewel in the Devon crown

Advantages: Friendly people, lovely views, quaint cottages, summers
Disadvantages: Bit of a ghost village in the winter

...I can hear you all saying 'Appledore? Never heard of it.' Well, neither had I until just over 5 years ago. How I came here. My family have always favoured North Devon and Cornwall for UK holidays and we had all spent many happy weeks in these areas relaxing and wishing that we didn't have to go back to our humdrum daily lives. Like many we'd trawled the local papers whilst on holiday, checking out the job and housing situation, and like most we'd return home with regret and dream of our next holiday. Well, everything changed for the whole family within the short space of 18 months. In that little time slot my husband, both my parents and my grandmother died leaving only my brother's family and my family to carry on. It was a devastating time for all of us and one which made my brother and myself take stock of our lives...

Review of Appledore, Devon

Saltram House, Devon.

Advantages: Lovely parkland and gardens, house.
Disadvantages: None.

...I live fairly close to Saltram House which is a property owned by the National Trust. It is great being so near as it is possible to visit fairly frequently for a short period, or spend longer depending on mood. The house is impressive, the gardens are beautiful and there are lots of walks around the grounds. Location Saltram is situated in Plympton which is in Devon. It is high above the River Plym, surrounded by woodland. The address is Saltram, Plympton, Plymouth, Devon, PL7 1UH. I would use a route planner if unfamiliar with the area as it is not on a main route. It is not far from Plymouth itself though being just on the outskirts, it is 3 and a half miles East of Plymouth City Centre. The entrance is in Plympton and there are brown National Trust signs as a guide and the entrance has magnificent pillars. Parking...

...Cornwall- A lovely Place to Visit Cornwall boast of a very mild climate compared to the rest of Great Britain. It is situated down in the South West of England. It is also steeped in history and at the time of the Domesday Survey in 1086 the population of Cornwall was around about 25,000 which seems a lot too me. Cornwall is very busy with tourists in the summer months which is a plus for the employment side of things but it also puts a lot of pressure on the local services such as Hospitals etc. Also the volume of traffic on the roads increases and this causes in time environmental damage. St Michael's Mount one of my favourite places which I visited a few years ago. This is a granite rock which is situated not very far away from Penzance. We stayed very near there so we were able to visit by just walking along the beach...

Roskilly's Of Cornwall

Advantages: Lovely icecream, drinks, food
Disadvantages: Location.

...1959. Joe Roskilly's children all work on the farm and one makes furniture in an outlet here and one stained glass, Roskillys also employ lots of locals here. They make the icecream on the premises and it is available in Falmouth and other outlets in Cornwall. To the left of the car park you can walk to the ponds, there are several ponds here with ducks and moorhens, and other wildlife, the walk with the ponds and woods is about one mile long and there are acres of land here. On your way back you pass the pasty parlour and the farm house. The Croust House is next which serves the food and drinks, then next to that is a lovely gift shop which sells a very good range of gifts and old fashioned childrens toys, good range of products and some things are pocket money prices, good range of postcards as well, also next door to the gift...

Advantages: Nostalgic look back in time.Wonderful scenery, friendly Staff, Clean Trains.
Disadvantages: Short journey.

Admission Prices: Return trip (single fares also available) Buckfastleigh - Totnes Littlehempston Adult £9.90 Senior Citizen £9.20 Child £5.90 (5 years - 14 years; under 5s FREE) Family £28.90 (two adults and two children) There is also FREE parking at Buckfastleigh for cars and coaches. We travelled from Totnes to Buckfastleigh to Totnes and it was just like going back in time. It was a thorougly enjoyable ride on a proper steam train. Taking in the wonderful scenery from Buckfastleigh to Totnes. We went in the summer and it was a fantastic journey beside the river Dart t. The trains are clean and comfortable, in my opinion much better than the trains of today. The children enjoyed the ride and the ability to get up and move...

Disadvantages: Expensive, lack of display space, no platform tickets available

...The South Devon Railway is, as the name suggests, a railway situated in South Devon, running steam trains from Totnes to Buckfastleigh. I visited with my family in May 2007, on a special ?Day Out with Thomas? weekend. There are three working stations on the line: Buckfastleigh, Staverton and Totnes Littlehempstone. If you are travelling by car, it?s best to head to Buckfastleigh station where there is extensive free parking just off the main A38 road from Plymouth to Exeter. There is some limited free parking at Staverton. At Totnes station there is no parking, although you can park at the Main Line (First Great Western) station or the dedicated Totnes Council car park, for both of which there is a (reasonably steep) charge, and a short walk to the station.
