Cotswold On The Cheap!

Advantages: Loads of animals, cheap, they are involved in conservation projects
Disadvantages: Dosg are not allowed in all section

...I recently had a week away in Gloucestershire with my best friend and our dogs. We stayed in a little cottage and planned to see as many attractions as we could in a week. While looking though a brochure of all the local attractions, I spotted one called Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens and was really pleased to see that we were allowed to take the dogs with us for a day out. History In 1923 the Manor House and Estate (that is now the park) were purchased by Colonel Heyworth-Savage and when he died in 1948, the estate was passed to his grandson John Heyworth who is the current owner. In 1969, he decided to open the gardens to the public. The Victorian Manor House that dominates the park is a listed building. Cotswold Wildlife Park is set in 160 acres of gardens and houses an amazing collection of birds, reptiles and mammals...

Wellington Country Park

Advantages: Reasonable prices, tranquil setting, great for picnics, lots to do for children.
Disadvantages: Lack of toilets further down the park, too much bird pooh.

...Last week I was privileged to be a parent helper on my daughter?s pre-school trip. The destination was not far from our home address yet I had never heard of this place before. Not only was I able to spend the day with a lovely group of pre-schoolers but I was able to take in some breathtaking scenery and fresh air. What a thoroughly enjoyable day lay ahead for us all and this park deserves a review to encourage (hopefully) more visitors. Situated within easy reach of both the M4 and M3, the park is open daily and is well signposted from the A33. *** PARK DETAILS*** Wellington Country Park Odiham Road Riseley READING Berkshire RG7 1SP Tel: 0118 932 6444 info@wellington-country-park.co.uk http://www.wellington-country-park.co.uk **Opening times as of 2007: ** The Park is open daily from February half term...

For the Country in the City - Pollok Country Park

Advantages: Free Entry, Open All Year, Beautiful, Lots to See and Do
Disadvantages: None Whatsoever!

...Would you be surprised to learn that Glasgow has over 70 parks within its city boundaries? It's not known affectionately as "Dear Green Place" for nothing. One of the largest parks is Pollok Country Park. Situated in the southside of the city, just three miles from the city centre, it was voted Best Park in Britain in 2007 and then went on to be crowned Europe's Best Park in 2008. It's a large park at over 360 acres, so even when the sun is splitting the sky (which does happen in Glasgow, you know!), it never feels crowded and you can always find a wee quiet spot for yourself. Where is it and how do we get there? It's on Pollokshaws Road, postcode G43 1AT, if you have SatNav, or take junction 1 or 2 from the M77 and follow the signs for the Burrell Collection. There is plenty of parking within the park. It...

Wirral Country Park - the Wirral Way

Advantages: Great day out for all the family
Disadvantages: none

...Now that the warmer weather has arrived I felt it was time to write about one of the places that I have visited on so many occasions from a child through to an adult and somewhere that will never loose its attraction. History of Wirral Country Park During the time of the Victorians a busy railway linked Hooton to West Kirby on the Wirral 12 miles away, miles of the railway line ran near to the Dee Estuary. The Steam Trains that used the railway used to bring townspeople to various stops along the line such as Parkgate for a cheap day out and back to the cities and towns at the end of the day. However, in 1962 the line was closed the seaside resorts as was where silted up and the track lay derelict for many years. In 1973 backed by the Countryside Commision and a lot of work this old railway line was opened as Wirral Country...

Ulley Country Park

Advantages: Tranquil, free, easily accessible
Disadvantages: Can get crowded at popular times

...Ulley reservoir lies approximately 10 miles (16 Km) to the east of Sheffield in South Yorkshire. This reservoir and its surrounding area of woodland opened as a country park in 1986 although the reservoir itself was created during the 1870's to provide a fresh supply of drinking water to Rotherham. By the early 1980's Ulley Reservoir was no longer providing water for Rotherham and so it was sold by Yorkshire Water to Rotherham Borough Council for the token sum of £1, with the purpose of creating the Country Park that we see today. Ulley Country Park now covers an area of around 33 acres. This is an area that I know very well. As a child I used to play around here and in those days it was the only local reservoir where sailing took place. It is still the home of the Ulley Sailing Club but nowadays the newer Rother Valley Country Park...

A nice country park in West Yorkshire

Advantages: Free access, good quality footpaths, an old mill and boathouse
Disadvantages: Messy paths after rainfall

...Newmillerdam Country Park lies adjacent to the main A61 Barnsley to Wakefield road in West Yorkshire. I have driven past here many times and I have always made a mental note to pay it a visit but it was only very recently that I finally got the chance to stop and have a look around. The country park is located approximately 5 kilometres south of Wakefield and covers an area of 237 acres. It consists of mixed broadleaf woodland centred around a large lake. When I visited here in early November the trees were lovely shades of golden brown. There is a large car park (pay and display) and a footpath goes all of the way around the lake. There are smaller footpaths that extend into the woodland and these are all popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The earliest reference to this area date back 1285 when the area was known...

Conferencing in the Cotswolds

Advantages: Modern, new, good condition, large rooms, excellent conference organisation
Disadvantages: It does not have the character of some Cotswolds properties.

...Last month I decided that it would be a good idea to take some training courses in order to demonstrate that I was being a good accountant and keeping up with my "Continuing Professional Development". Something we accountants have to do. A few hours later I was booked on a two and a half day residential course which was to be held in the Cotswold Water Park Hotel, part of the Four Pillars Hotel chain. Booking My hotel accommodation was booked by the course organisers and included in the course fee paid. However I decided to arrive the day before in order to avoid a very early start on the first morning of the course. The hotel website was offering rooms for £80 a night but before booking I called to see if there was a better delegate rate available. I was surprised to find that delegates were being offered additional nights...

Go wild in the Cotswolds

Advantages: Saving Endangered Animals
Disadvantages: No Local Transport

...During that last half term I took my children to the Cotswold Wildlife park and Gardens, I have been there on quiet a few occasions and thoroughly enjoy the experience every time. A little bit of history about the park It first opened in 1970 by John Heyworth, which has now been taken over by his son Reggie Heyworth. The Manor House was built in1804. Parts of the house are now open to visitors. The park does not receive money from any where else but from their visitors. The prices are £9.50 for adults £7.00 for children between the ages of 3 to 16 years £7.00 for senior citizens aged 65 and over Children under 3 go for free. Upon arriving at the park you drive up a long drive to the kiosk, then you are directed round to the left to park on grass, coaches and disabled people are directed to the right where it is nearer...

Thrybergh Country Park, South Yorkshire

Advantages: Lots Of Wildlife, Free Entry
Disadvantages: Footpaths Can Get Messy

...Thrybergh Country Park lies approximately 3 miles to the North West of Rotherham Town Centre and about 9 miles to the West of Doncaster, in South Yorkshire and is one of the largest Country Parks in the region. At the centre of this Park lies a Reservoir, created in 1880 to supply Water to Doncaster and the surrounding area. However throughout its history this Reservoir never met the demands that were put on it, largely due to leakage from the reservoir floor. During the 1940's this Reservoir was producing 490,000 gallons of Water a day, but losing 100,000 gallons of this every day. By the 1960's it was only producing 350,000 gallons a day, but still losing 100,000 gallons every day, so it no longer became commercially viable. In September 2000 Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council purchased Thrybergh reservoir from Yorkshire...
