Pentium 4 Interface
Review of Intel Pentium 4 2 GHz processor by
rpgmagician
Advantages: much better than SLOT1
Disadvantages: don't know
...The Pentium 4 interfaces with the motherboard using a new socket, named Socket-423. In fact, after the first half of 2001 the Pentium 4 will start to be available in both a Socket-423 and a Socket-478 version. The latter will be due to replace Socket-423 much like Socket-370 replaced Slot-1. For those of you that currently have Slot-1 CPUs, do you want to be in the same situation with the Pentium 4 as you current are with your CPU?
In contrast, AMD plans to stick with Socket-A for at least a little while longer. The next generation Athlon and Duron CPUs, according to AMD, will work in current Socket-A boards however you will obviously need a new board with 266MHz (133MHz DDR) FSB support if you want to get the most out of a 266MHz FSB CPU.
Without looking at benchmarks, the short lived nature of the Socket-423 interface...

AMD quality for the masses but..
Review of Amd Athlon Xp 3000+ by
happy-reviewer
Advantages: cheaply priced,good performance,nice overclocker
Disadvantages: athlon 2500 mobile edition is cheaper and more overclockable.Runs hotter then athlon mobile cpus
...Well I have been into pcs a long time now, owning
from an athlon 1800 up to and athlon 3000 and 3200.
Now most people judge when buying cpus or hardware
price/performance,now admittedly whilst the pentiums
are good cpus,in all fairness they are more costily and
their price/perfomrance ratio isnt as good.
Add to this the fact that the athlons whilst running hot
can be very very good overclocking processors with the
right air or water coolling and you have yourself a very
very competitive yet not overprice cpu.
Although personally myself I would purchase a mobile
Athlon 2500 cpu ,these are processors made for
laptops, but are compatible with socket A motherboards
and they run at a lower voltage meaning..
1) they run cooler by a quite a few degrees
2) the 2500 mobile athlon cpus overclock better then the standard athlon xp...

Intel finally catches up with AMD
Review of Intel Pentium III 1.13 GHz processor by
Kinny
Advantages: Fast, equals perforamce of AMD at the GHz clock speed
Disadvantages: Too expensive
...'s hasn't be long since the release of the 1GHz processors, intel was the first to officially release theirs in an attempt to try and regain the CPU market, and not long after their release, AMD followed in pursuit. Since then Intel has start to reduce the gap between them and AMD. Intel's PIII Ghz processors is now neck and neck with AMD's Ghz processors as tests suggest. Whether it is with RAMBUS or not it's still offering equal if not better in performace to AMD's Athlon and Thunderbird CPUs. AMD processors are cheaper to buy than Intel PIII's, but if you can afford it then go for the PIII at Ghx speed, they are more reliable than Athlons of Thunderbirds, but you will need to pick a very good motherboard for it to last and to be able to ensure you can squeeze the last bit of processing power out of your CPU.
Anything below about 900MHz...

Excellent value for money
Review of Intel Pentium 4 530J / 3 GHz processor by
MadMike542
Advantages: Very high speed
Disadvantages: Not the fastest on the market, fan is noisy
...I purchased this CPU during a mass upgrade for my PC a couple of years ago when it was in dire need of speeding up. My old processor was an AMD Athlon which ran at a tiny 1.2GHz and wasn't capable of running the latest games, applications etc at any one time.
At the time I was on a strict budget since I needed to buy a new mother board, power supply, graphics card and processor so I had to hunt around for the best deals going on at the time. The Intel P4 3.0GHz Socket 775 CPU with Hyper-Threading technology was the best deal I could find on the web at the time, and boy does this processor deliver compared to my old one. With just a processor upgrade alone my system speed was dramatically increased and is now capable of running all the latest games, applications etc with no problem whatsoever. I also see this processor being what I call...

Guide To Athlon64
Review of AMD Athlon 64 4000+ / 2.6 GHz processor by
Omerali
Advantages: Read review
Disadvantages: Read review
...flavours :-
Athlon64 Socket 754 :- These include 2800+,3000+,3200+,3400+,3700+.
These Are the Best Price/Performance CPUs. I'd personally suggest the 3200+. They utilize Single Channel Memory. The best chipset for this would be Nforce3 250GB
Athlon64 Socket 939 :- These, So far, include 3500+ 3800+
They are based on the Socket 939 platform. They have DUAL Channel Memory and 512 L2 Cache. They are rather pricey but their performance/price is better than the top-of-the-line offerings from Intel.
Athlon64 FX Socket 939 :- This Just has the FX53.
Its the Top of the cream and the World's fastest performing processors [Except it looses to the P4 3.0ghz + CPUs in some tests]. It has Dual Channel Memory Controller and 1MB L2Cache. It works with both ECC and Non EEC registered Ram. EEC registered are expensive and cause performance loss. Normal...

Extreme money, not extreme performance
Review of Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.2 GHz processor by
Darkle
Advantages: Good for high level processing workstation / server
Disadvantages: not good value for money, runs abit hot
...attribute of a processor, and should only be used for comparison of the same thing, e.g a Pentium 4 3.0ghz is faster than a Pentium 4 2.8ghz.
Now to the Processor. The extreme edition Pentium 4 has basically brought server level processing to the users desktop. Straight away, I would not recommend this for gamers or light users. This is for someone who wants to do Workstation level processing such as CAD or heavy video editing work. The reason for this is that while the Extreme edition CPU has 2mb of on-board cache, it won’t really go faster in most applications. Benchmarking this processor in 3DMark 2001se and 2003 yielded a less than 1% difference over a 3.4 Pentium 4C(the normal Pentium with 512kb of cache). The main reason for this is that these applications don’t really make use of the extra cache therefore don’t take advantage...

Performance thats Cheap as Chips
Review of AMD Duron by
RPalmer83
Advantages: fast, reliable, cheap, cool running
Disadvantages: not available in high clock speeds, New motherboard may be necessary, Overclocking might be difficult
...The AMD Duron is one of the most powerful CPUs on the market today for the money. A 1.3Ghz chip can be picked up for around the £40 mark.
The processor will only fit in a Socket A motherboard, so if you are currently an Intel user you would need to buy a new motherboard to install it. There are no instructions to speak of unless you buy the retail version but its a doddle anyway. Just open the lever on the socket. Drop the chip in (it only fits one way) close the lever, clip the fan assembly over it and your away!.
I have a Duron 800Mhz chip in my machine and its fully compatible with Windows XP and every application I run. The Duron has less cache on board than the Athlon but it doesn't really make much of a difference performance wise, if you compare the two chips at the same clock speed.
The Duron can be overclocked but its...
