Good to help
Review of Crimewatch UK by
begum
Advantages: good crime factual show
Disadvantages: none
...CrimeWatch is a programme that asks the viewers for their help in solving crimes, the programme highlights the problems we still have in society, with old women being mugged, people being killed.
However, for the victim’s family, it’s a chance to see the culprit behind bars. They usually reconstruct a crime, and at the end have a photo fit, which may look like the person wanted.
Then viewers can phone an anonymous number to give some useful information they may think is relevant to the case. Viewers have solved many crimes, so it is useful in that way, because when people see the reconstruction it can jog memories, and it also appeals to a wider audience.
The murder of one of it’s presenters was very saddening, Jill Dando was a person who appealed to many to help solve crimes, ironically...

Compensation for victims of crime in the UK
Review of Compensation4Crime.com by
sukeysukey
Advantages: excellent lawyers; honesty and integrity; speed of service
Disadvantages: none
...http://www.compensation4crime.com
Compensation4Crime, based at http://www.compensation4crime.com is a company providing legal support services to victims of violent crime.
Victims of violent crime in the UK are entitled to pursue compensation from the government in the form of a Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority payment. Unfortunately the process is long and complicated and often the award made by the CICA has to be appealed.
Compensation4crime provide legal assistance in pursuing such a claim, preparing all the paperwork, advising on the prospects of success and the appropriate amount of damages to be expected, gathering necessary evidence etc and will also pursue any appeal/ review necessary, even as far as a Judicial Review of the CICA scheme.
The site is well constructed and simple to navigate - as is applying, which can...

Slick as you like
Review of Layer Cake DVD by
fendertele
Advantages: Slick style British Ganster Movie
Disadvantages: People are going to compare with Lock Stock and Snatch
...On watching this I wouldn't say this is the conventional ganster film. It is obviously in the same league as Snatch and Lock, Stock but this portrays British crime in a different light.
Layer Cake trys to give an insight that British crime in this instance Drug Crimes. It shows the lead ( Daniel Craig ) who wants to retire from crime, as more of a business man than a gangster but as you watch the film it unfolds that crime doesn't have the same morals as a business would.
From the start the gang are shown to be a slick operation that are professional and this is offset by the typical wideboy who thinks he is the gangster but is shown to be all mouth.
As we progress through the story you can see who the big players are and how everyone is lining someone elses pocket. The main characters show this from the bottom of the proverbial...

Why is it so good?
Review of Crime and Punishment - Fyodor Dostoevsky by
delgerka_8
Advantages: This is one of the best descriptive novels I have ever read, Crime and Punishment is extremely good.
Disadvantages: Anyone who would want to read a nice comedy (funny) book don't, because in some ways it is scary.
...I read Crime and Punishment in russian when I lived in Russia. It was pretty scary, when I read it first time, because I think I was about 12 years old. It is an excellent book, because the description with which the book was written can be even better than Tolstoy.
First writing Dostoevskii had success with was 'Poor People' (I think it is the right title, because I read it in Russian as well. The theme of this book is that people, even though they are leading a boring and pathetic life, can maintain their generosity. This will be one of his leading themes when he will be writing his other books.
Crime and Punishment is about a poor student who commits a crime-kills an old woman, who is extremely greedy, because of his life conditions, i.e. to get some money. The place where the crime took place is described very detailed...

Crimewatch
Review of Crimewatch UK by
jennifer.tweedie
Advantages: chance to play detectives
Disadvantages: none unless you happen to be a presenter (Jill Dando ring any bells?)
...Crimewatch UK has been going forever and is basically a way for the police to enlist the general (crimewatch viewing) public to help them to solve crimes. These are often long running cases that the police have no leads for and putting them on television is a last ditch attempt to solve them. Particularly shocking and violent crimes are also featured along with robberies and other crimes where the perpetrators have been caught on CCTV.
The basic formula is that the presenters will introduce the case that is to be solved, then a reconstruction is staged or photofit shown, followed by a police officer and the host talking about some details of the crime and asking for the viewers help before giving details of how to contact the show or police.
Later in the show they highlight cases where viewers calls have helped to solve a crime and tell...

The Loop of Infinity...
Review of Crime Traveller - The Complete Series (Box Set) by
Emuchick
Advantages: Interesting plot, great characters
Disadvantages: V short series, not enough special features
...This was a Tv series I remember i loved when it was first shown and I was delighted when it was released on DVD.
The basic plot follows a similar format from episode to episode. Detective Jeff Slade (Michael French) and police science officer Holly Turner (Cloe Annet) team up and travel back in time to solve a crime. While this doesn't sound like the premise for an exciting show, it works.
The characters are cast well and you find yourself willing them to make it through the various mishaps that occur. Watching how the relationship between the main characters develops over the two series adds a much needed sense of depth. There's also plenty of laughs, well placed within each episode.
It's definitely a show you can watch more than once as it's almost as enjoyable going back and picking up all the subtle clues you missed the first...

Youth and Crime- Explore the Connections
Review of Youth and Crime - John Muncie by
Gemerina
Advantages: very informative, great if your studying
Disadvantages: the price
...Youth and Crime
Youth and Crime is a book written by John Muncie who is a renowned professor of criminology and co-director of the International Centre for Comparative Criminological Research at the Open University.
The book itself details the many psychological, sociological and general statistics that connect youth and crime together. The book contains seven chapters with sub chapters within each main chapter, which I will detail below to give you an idea of how in depth the book really is.
The Chapters
Chapter One-Youth Crime: Representations, Discourses and Data.
This chapter details the threat of youth as such, about how the youth and the threat of youth and portrayed within the media and how crimes committed by youths have contributed to a moral panic of how youths are becoming more dangerous and in pursuit of a criminal...

Evidence of a great read
Review of Body of Evidence - Patricia Cornwell by
Peachypobs
Advantages: Continuing with a much loved character
Disadvantages: None
...‘Someone is stalking Beryl Madison. Someone who spies on her makes threatening obscene phone calls. Terrified, Beryl flees to Key West, but eventually she must return to her Richmond home. The very night she arrives, Beryl inexplicably invites her killer in….’ Thus starts another murder mystery for Dr Kay Scarpetta.
For those who haven’t read any of Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta mysteries before, Dr Kay Scarpetta is the chief medical examiner for Virginia, USA. She is charged with discovering what happened in some of the most gruesome crimes committed.
These books are written in the first person, that of Kay Scarpetta, so no information is off limits, including the autopsy and crime scenes. For those of you who enjoy crime detection novels, this one is definitely a must....

Three thrilling books in one!
Review of The Carl Hiaasen Omnibus - Carl Hiaasen by
Ed_Dunhill
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...Carl Hiaasen is more than just an excellent crime writer he is also a comic genius. Hiaasen is a native of Florida which is where he bases the majority of his black humoured crime thrillers. His books are sharp, witty and very engaging. The omnibus brings together three of Hiaasen’s greatest books; Tourist season, (the infamous) Double Whammy and Skin Tight. My favourite of the three books in the omnibus is Double Whammy. Double Whammy is a savagely funny crime adventure exposing the dark underbelly of Florida’s tournament fishing circuit. Once you’ve started reading the omnibus you won’t be able to put it down until you’ve read all three books....

Putting crime together
Review of The Jigsaw Man (The Remarkable Career of Britain's Foremost Criminal Psychologist) - Paul Britton by
DavRob
Advantages: Not too technical, unputdownable, very very interesting
Disadvantages: Some disturbing passages.
...The Jigsaw Man by Paul Brittan is a book that can be read on two levels. The first as a crime book, reading stories of crimes and the people who perpatrated them. Secondly on a deeper level the book gives a valuble insight as to how 'psychological profiling' is used as a tool to understand the workings of a criminal mind, and also how it can be used to identify a suspects life in such a way as to describe them in every detail. Paul Britton fills the book with a number of 'famous' cases, James Bulger (a particularly hard chapter to read) and Rachel Nichell amongst them. He also talk about his family and professional life and how he came to have the career he does. A very good read for people who work in a similar career or even for anyone who may just have a passing interest....
