Crossroads For A New Generation

Advantages: good cast, enjoyable, interesting, promising start
Disadvantages: has to shake off the old version of the series

...I vaguely remember Crossroads from my childhood. Somehow it never captivated me in the same way as Coronation Street always has done. I recall some of the characters – that dippy Benny with the tea-cosy hat, the ginger haired bloke in the wheelchair, the imposing headmistress-like Meg played by Noelle Gordon. Think of Crossroads, think of cheap sets and caricatured roles – blame my memory for anything you disagree with here. However, it must have had some kind of charm, because I was pleased to hear it was coming back in 2001. Admittedly, I do like soap operas and faithfully follow EastEnders, Coronation Street and Brookside. I have even tried to get into Emmerdale, but apart from being mesmerised by any scenes with the McGann brother in, the rest of it seems pretty bland. But I thought I’d give Crossroads a go...

Crossroads returns and is even better than before

Advantages: escapism at its best.
Disadvantages: none

...Now let me explain the title, Crossroads just re-started recently and it already rates, with me, as one of the best things on television. It is now called a Hotel and this hotel was built on the site of the old Motel which explains why the set has changed. In the very first episode there was a lot of new younger faces but they also brought back Doris the house keeper and Jill Harvey previous owner and share holder, now deceased as I will explain in a minute. Within the first week another old face appears in the form of Adam Chance, who is all set to charm his way back into Jill's life. By the way I am only 28 and I only just remember the original crossroads, my grandma used to watch it and I now love listening to the music as it rtakes me back and reminds me of her. Sarah-Jane Harvey, Jill's daughter, has come back...

Crossroads - Back for Good

Advantages: Good storylines so far, entertaining, repeated twice a day
Disadvantages: Coincides with The Weakest Link, previous bad reputation

...I vaguely remember the original series of Crossroads. I was a little young to recall the storylines with any reliable detail but I still refer to knitted hats as 'Benny hats'. I seem to remember that Jill was married to someone called Stan, who I think is Sarah Jane's father. I can't quite remember where Miss Diane fits in but I do know that Benny was very fond of her. Whatever happened to Shuey McFee? When I first heard that Crossroads was to be resurrected I thought it was a mistake. Historical greats like The Generation Game and Carry on belong to another era. The days of the 'hit parade' have long gone. However, I am happy to say that after watching the new Crossroads, that my original misgivings were wrong. The new Crossroads still has some of the old faces like Jill, Adam and Doris but that is all that remains...

Turn Off At The Crossroads

Advantages: Maybe if I think hard I'll find one but I don't have two weeks free.
Disadvantages: Waste of your television and time.

...When Channel 5 snatched "Home And Away" from ITV with a sensational coup, ITV was unsure how its fill the vacant twice a day, five day a week slot. Actually ITV were desperate for ideas which could explain why "Crossroads" was brought back from the dead. Just short of twenty-five years old Crossroads was axed in April 1988 after being the butt of many a stand-up comic's jokes. In my opinion its reputation was slightly unjust as the actors and ratings were as equal to Coronation Street. Many legends about Crossroads are untrue such as scenery collapsing, it never did though there was almost a fire in a live episode featuring Jane Rossington(Jill Harvey). Advantages: enjoyable though not addictive

...I enjoyed the original series of Crossroads.With Miss Diane, and Benny, and Doris Luke and Meg. But then I was just a teenager who was easily impressed! So, when the announcement of the return of Crossroads came I was a little excited, mainly to see a programme I had enjoyed when I was younger. So it started Monday 5th March, in a hype of publicity! A few original characters remained namely: Jill Harvey (Jill Rossington), Doris Luke(Kathy Staff), and the yet to be seen Adam Chance(unsure)! The series opened in a completly different setting, and completly updated! The hotel is exactly that - a hotel as opposed to a motel. It is a plush hotel, that you would welcome a stay in. Crossroads and Benny

Advantages: may be coming back
Disadvantages: awful acting which made it fun to watch

...Set in a motel this was one of the first popular soaps. It was a pity that it was stopped even though it still had a lot of viewers when it did end. It wasnt like soaps today when if they made a mistake in their lines they can erase it and do another take. Any errors stayed. Amy Turtle was the best for getting her lines muddled up or even forgot them altogether and the programme was worth watching just to see this! Then there was Benny with his hat and Miss Diane. There is talk of doing a remake of Crossroads which will be interesting to see if they do and what they do with it....

Crossroads Has Returned With A Venance

Advantages: addictive and amusing

...Crossroads has finally returned to our telly after being sacked quite a number of years ago. There is no sign of the wobbly sets or any sightings of Benny or Diane. In the new look crossroads there is only three of the original cast. These are:Adam Chance played by Tony Adams, Doris Luke played by Kathy Staff and Jill Harvey played Jane Rossington. ...Crossroads began slowly in my opinion, though it had recently had a few exciting storylines. The original crossroads (Only what I have been told) was a cardboard set, poor actors, and poor storylines! And yet it was a success, millions of viewers tuned in each week to watch the antics of Meg Richardson and her family. When the newly refurbished (in fact rebuilt) crossroads hit our screens earlier this year, it received criticism and praise. Crossroads of Twilight - another small step

Advantages: Good plot and intricately written
Disadvantages: Slow pace and bewildering for newcomers

...I remember when I first picked up Robert Jordan's first "Wheel of Time" book, "The Eye of the World" back in 1991. I was captivated by it and continued to diligently read each new book in the series as it came out. Gradually, as the years passed, my interest began to slowly diminish as it became (admittedly slowly) clear to me that the pace was getting slower and slower and the author might even be having problems thinking about how he was ever going to finish this series. "Crossroads of Twilight" does nothing to dispel this somewhat discomforting feeling that the entire epic is gradually drawing to a shuddering, weary halt. This, the tenth volume showcases all that has become wrong with Mr Jordan's once-superb series.
