Review of CTX S521A

Advantages: Sharp clear picture, no dead pixels
Disadvantages: Driver trouble with video card

...gain. there?s even a DOS mode option where you have to change if its in text or graphics. Automatically configures itself the right display rotating itself is necessary and changing the H and V position. the monitor is flicker free and runs ok at 75HZ However there are no drivers with the monitor so I thought it would be already in windows XP, I was wrong. without getting the drivers colors are limited to 16 and a display picture of 800X600, as you can guess it doesn?t look very good. you can download the drivers off the internet or wing CTX to send you one first class. I would seriously recommend this monitor to someone that is looking for a cheap well made 15" TFT....

Xbox 360 60 GB with CRT set up

Advantages: price, availability of cheap second hand games, loads of game choice
Disadvantages: expensive extras (such as wireless card), the notorious hardware problems

.... ***** setting up and potential problems********* OK, just for info I set my system up to a standard CRT TV using a SCART lead. The cable for connecting to the TV is split one side is 3 component cables, the other one is 3 component cables that plug into a SCART socket on your TV. On the end of the cable that plugs into the xbox 360 there is a sliding switch to select HD TV or normal TV (like mine!). However - there was a problem with my Xbox 360 when starting up. You are supposed to be able to start the xbox with the remote control, however I needed to press the power button a few times before I could get a picture and eventually I was getting errors on the tv screen (e74). I assumed this to be a problem with my TV at first and wasn't that concerned as once the xbox 360 eventually started it was working fine. A bit of digging around...

Dukeys 19 inch monster

Advantages: Big screen, loads of desktop, solid build
Disadvantages: Bloody heavy

.... Enough of my self-back slappery, on with the opinion! A few weeks before I returned home, I wanted to make sure I was ready to use my PC to it's fullest as soon as I returned. What I was ideally looking for was one that was bigger than my previous monitor, a 15" CTX model which served me very well for 5 years. I surfed my usual selection of PC component sites, and found two monitors which tickled my fancy - a Hansol 19" at a very reasonable £130 ish, and a nice CTX 17" at just under this price. I took a few days to browse these sites, to make sure I had the best price, and the best monitor when I suddenly saw on eBuyer.com a CTX monitor for £136. I had been edging towards the 17" CTX monitor anyway because of how satisfied I'd been with my previous model, and this was just too good to turn down. So, what can I say about a monitor...

CRT versus LCD televisions

Advantages: CRTs still render the best pictures
Disadvantages: Too big and ugly

...I guess we have all debated the pros and cons of LCD televisions against the older CRT models. On balance it would appear that both the manufacturer and the consumer have reached the conclusion that LCD televsions are best. Gradually CRT models are being phased out and you will be lucky to find a shop that still offers CRT as an option. You might even ask why I haven't included plasma screens in this debate. I won't discuss plasma screens here because I think they fall into the same category as LCD screens in the main. There are subtle differences between the two technologies but they both require the digital format, and with screen sizes of 40 inches and above now for LCD, plasma is fast becoming redundant too. The advantages over CRT screens are obvious and substantial but there are some real and significant downsides too. LCD...

Long live CRT!

Advantages: Excellent picture quality and sound
Disadvantages: Ok it's bigger than an LCD or plasma...

...In this age of cheaper and cheaper flat creen LCD or Plasma tvs I'd like to just put in a word for CRT tvs. My Panasonic 28" widescreen tv has a sharper, clearer, more colourful and contrast-rich picutre than even the most expensive Plasma and doesn't suffer from any of the pixellation or problems with fast moving scenes such as sport that plagues LCDs and Plasmas. I'm not sure whether no one else notices or it's a case of "king's new clothes" and no one dares mention that , while their new tv looks very futuristic and sci-fi flat, actually the picture is at best adequate and often rubbish. DVDs may look passable (though the contrast ratios make night scenes grey rather than black) but standard definition Freeview broadcasts, especially on the more compressed channels such as ITV3, are frankly awful. Watch the Champions League on ITV...

Expected CRT quality

Advantages: Cheap, easy to use, good quality
Disadvantages: It's a CRT!

...I've had this monitor for around 2 years now and it is still running in the same condition as when first purchased. I run the monitor at 1152x864 with a refresh rate of 75 Hertz on my Geforce 6600GT with a lower resolution in games to keep my frame rate high. I know CRT monitors are fast becoming a legacy technology but that wasn't due for consideration 2 years ago especially with the problem of my other monitor failing and me requiring and emergency replacement for less than £100, this clocked in at £60. The picture quality is always sharp and the colours are of a high standard. The monitor easily pumps up to it's max resolution of 1280x1024 but with the degrading refresh rate of 60Hz, I read somewhere that the lower the refresh rate the more damaging to your eyes a monitor can be so I like to keep mine as high as possible thus...

Review of Samsung SyncMaster 753 S

Superb quality, ubeatable value

Advantages: super high refresh rates, superb image quality
Disadvantages: Unreliable but not a problem as warranty it great

..., looking at it for long periods is no problem so word processing is much easier on the eyes. The only bad point is that it has beena little unreliable, two having failed in the last 2 years. HOWEVER, the warranty from ctx is a 24hr replacement service so you'll get an identical or better one working delivered free within 24 hours (next working day) of it failing. Good stuff and after this happened the first time I couldn't give a dam if it failed again as it was such quick service, and for such a great monitor at such a silly price it was worth it! You can get these for around £100 now, so if you're after a superb 17inch crt, you don't need to look elsewhere really! You can of course pay over £200 for a 17inch crt for some sony or mitsubishi diamond tron, but the picture quality difference is virtually indestinguishable....

Welcome to the Warranty Lottery

Advantages: Cheap (ish)
Disadvantages: Attempted to get out of their warranty commitments

...I`ve had a 15" Proview PX564 monitor for around 14 months, and it started to act as though it had lost "vertical hold" (like you`d get on a TV). The picture up until that point had been acceptable (not the best i`ve seen), but the bundled speakers were quite good, and seemed louder than piping it through a stereo (maybe with sitting closer ?) The monitor came with a 3 year onsite warranty, and when I contacted them via the service email address, I received a reply from someone on the CTX service desk, saying I would have to contact another number. I had asked if they could see any problems getting it replaced under warranty if I couldn`t find the receipt, and they didn`t think it would be a problem - after all, it was only manufactured 2 years ago, and date stamped. When I contacted Proview by phone, they did their very best to put...

Review of CTX PX564

CTeXcellent!

Advantages: Crystal clear image, reliable as reliable is.
Disadvantages: Bit on the large size.

...I've had one of these monitors for quite a while, in fact, over a year. It was a Christmas present (Lucky me :-) When I first unpacked it I was struck by the sheer size of it! I was used ot a puny 14" machine and this is quite a bit different. I'm not a trained engineer or anything but I really like the picture. Its absolutely sharp all over and there are no bends in the image at all. The picture is also VERY flicker free and great for the eyes. I found that my old 14" used to give me headaches after extended periods of viewing, not so with the 19" CTX. I'd recommend a large CTX monitor to anyone especially as they have a 3 year warranty as well as standard....

Good CRT TV and a bargain

Advantages: good picture quality and very cheap
Disadvantages: very bulky in comparison with todays TV's

...I first bought this TV as something for me to play my playstation on so I wasn't looking for anything to flashy or expensive. All other 28" widescreen TV's at the time i bought this were for £500 and i picked this beauty up for a bargain at just £250. I have had this TV for around 5 years now and its still going strong, the picture quality is as good as any CRT TV i've seen and the sound quality is good enough. Its features are easy enough to use and I think this proves that not all cheap TV's are useless. Its a decent enough size screen so you can still enjoy watching DVD's on it. The only downside really is the bulkyness of it, when compared to all flat screens of today this TV is a behemoth but for what I picked this TV up for its an absolute gem!!!!...
