...The Rubik's cube was invented in the 1980's by Erno Rubik who used to teach in a school at Budapest. He invented this cube to help students learn about geometry but he then decided to sell this cube as a brain challenging toy. As soon as this toy came out thousands of people went to buy in what is now called the Rubik craze. Nearly thirty years on this toy is still a huge success. The object is actually quite simple. You have a cube with 6 faces divided into nine segments. Each of the nine segments is in one of six colours. Now all you need to do is make all six faces the same colour and you have solved the Rubik's cube. The only problem of course is that it is a teensy bit harder than it sounds. ...The Science Fiction/Horror combo is one of my favourite genres of film, I just can't get enough of the Alien series and others like Sphere etc. So I just had to see Cube. The film starts with a guy inside a square room on his own he moves to a small square doors in the middle of one of the walls and passes into the next room which is identical but for the colour. Nothing strange yet, but then there is a quick swishing noise and the man freezes. A trickle of blood is soon followed by many more as lines appear all over his body were he has been quickly sliced by a wire mesh. His body then falls apart gruesomely onto the floor. Girly Ice Cubes!

Advantages: Look cool, durable, dishwasher safe
Disadvantages: Maybe a bit too girly for the boys!

...As it's summer and the weather is getting hotter I thought I would invest in an ice cube tray so that I could make my drinks extra cold. I'm not a big fan of the ice cube bags which you only use once, this adds up and they can get quite expensive (and for some reason I always manage to catch some of the plastic into the water so that there is plastic bag in the ice cubes - not good!) Also they are not very environmentally friendly, only being able to use them once. I was on the lego website looking at the 'Apparel, Home & Outdoors' section when I came across this really cute ice cube tray. My wonder cubes

Advantages: Versatile, great flavour, convenient
Disadvantages: There is no excuse for not cooking

...My mum recommended these little wonder cubes to me and I have not looked back since. They have become on of the most important and most used items in my kitchen cupboard, even inspiring me to cook occasionally (they must be good!). You can find Knorr Mixed Herb Cubes in the same isle as Oxo Cubes and Bisto gravy. They come in little flat boxes about 4 inches by 2.5 inches (don?t look for fat boxes like Oxo cubes) and the box is mainly green with the red Knorr writing. By the way, for those that think packaging is irrelevant, I hope by describing the box I will help you find them quicker, as you have just got to try them if you like herbs. Mmmm... Oxo Beef Cubes

Advantages: Versatile, tasty, low calorie
Disadvantages: I can't think of any..

...Oxo cubes are, for me, an essential for having in the kitchen cupboard for when I am cooking. There are 17 calories per cube. You only need one or two to season a stew or a chilli so it is great for low calorie seasoning. They have a good long shelf life (almost 2 years - but the best before date is written on them) so you don't have to rush to use them. They are to be kept in a cool, dark place. I find these are really versatile (I put them in just about everything!) They make everything taste really yummy and they are so easy to use. You can either crumble them directly in to the food as you make it, or you can mix it with water to make a stock.
