Thinking About Haring Kids

Advantages: Well-designed, easy-to-follow, early introduction to art and writing about art, most of all, FUN!
Disadvantages: None technically, none content wise, but children might steal your online time!

...Keith Haring. He was an artist dontchaknow. And HaringKids, surprisingly enough, is a site for children based around his work. It's educational but fun too ? no, it's fun but educational too, that's the right way around. And that's the whole idea really ? art for adults can be art for children too. I'll quickly tell you a little bit about the art before I describe the site I think. Keith Haring developed his style on the New York subway. He wasn?t a graffiti artist ? he didn't draw on the trains. He drew, at first with chalks, on the black paper that is stuck over advertisements when their paid-for time has elapsed but there are no other advertisements with unspent paid-for time to replace them. Gradually, as time went on, he became popular, exhibited widely and made a fairly big name for himself. Haring's style is bright, simple...

Hartley - Just The Hare I Wanted!

Advantages: Great nostalgia, excellent extras, well thought out DVD, the adorable Hartley!
Disadvantages: Only that it's taken so long to be released!

...INTRODUCTION Pipkins reminds me of childhood lunchtimes in my old house. It was one of my favourite TV programmes and I loved it. Decades later, my most vivid memories are of Hartley Hare, Octavia the Ostrich and the 'It's ??. TIME?.' With its visual display of ticking clocks. Nostalgia indeed. But some 25 to 30 years later, how would the real thing - not seen since childhood - hold up to my treasured memories? I had to find out. So I pre-ordered the new Pipkins DVD and eagerly waited for it to drop on my doormat? I put the DVD in and began watching the first episode on there. It was great, I enjoyed it and - although decidedly 1970s - it was as good as I remembered it. But how would it stand up to the test of modern kids used to the highest technology in animation and puppetry? I sat my nine year old down in front of it...

For Cyril and Lily...the best grandparents.

Advantages: They are like your parents, only nicer and more lenient!
Disadvantages: They have to get old and frail:o(

...This is my offering in response to CheekyGrannys challenge to me. Thanks Paula, it was a great idea and I have enjoyed writing it! I look forward to reading others! For Cyril Claude (Aka Grandad Bodie!) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My paternal Grandfather, Cyril, died in the 70?s. I remember the night, well. He had been ill for sometime and we were staying at my maternal grandmothers house to be near the hospital should we be needed. We weren?t, he went very quickly at then end...and left a gaping hole in my life. I didn?t know that at the time. I do now. He spoiled my brother and I rotten, not always with material things but with fun and laughter, and the cheeky things that you can only do with your grandchildren. When Ian and me stayed with him; it was like an indulgent holiday. In the summer he was an almost permanent...

Handy Hilton Hotel for High Flyers

Advantages: Can't hear the planes, right at the airport
Disadvantages: Bit of a trek into the Windy City...

...Back in June I needed a hotel in Chicago for a single Saturday night before flying back from Chicago O'Hare Airport to London Heathrow late Sunday evening. I didn't fancy dragging heavy luggage and shopping all the way into the Windy City just for one night (which can take about 40-60 minutes from Chicago O'Hare Airport, read on for more info on this...) and then back out again to the airport the next day, so I decided to consider hotels near Chicago O'Hare Airport. A quick search on Google suggested that the Chicago Hilton O'Hare Airport Hotel might be my best bet: http://www1.hilton.com/enUS/hi/hotel/CHIOHHH-Hilton-Chicago-O-Hare-Airport -Illinois/index.do - it is the only hotel physically linked to the airport building. As I've mentioned in my other Hilton review so far, I am a member of the HiltonHonors club, which is free...

Hare, turnip and cranberry ravioli in Qude Gueuze. Den Dyver.

Advantages: Perfection on every level.
Disadvantages: We don't live closer.

...had hare, turnip and cranberry ravioli cooked in Qude Gueuze which is served with the Winterbier. The dish was simply divine and full of flavours that develop at different levels at different times in your mouth. The beer was rich and full of warm spices and matched the hare perfectly. The dishes were elegantly presented with a look that real love and thought had gone into every element. The Maitre D' was attentive throughout yet still gave us time to ourselves. I particularly liked the introductions he gave to the different beers, giving us a little history and what flavours to look out for. We stayed at the restaurant for over four hours and ended up a little tipsy as the three beers we had averaged around 8-10% alc vol. The washrooms were very well appointed and extremely clean although we did have a little confusion over which was...

Bored Kids? Try this.

Advantages: Funny, informative, entertaining.
Disadvantages: None, actually.

...kids entertained during holidays and rainy weekends - not to mention its teaching capacity. The equipment needed is largely everyday stuff that you'll either have lying around the house already or can acquire cheaply. I tried out some of the experiments myself (they were extremely easy to follow) and could have done most of them if I'd been bothered. Having said that, you don't have to do a single experiment to enjoy this book. You can just find the answers to the questions you've never asked, like why the freezer door sticks after you've just opened it or why shandy froths less when you put the lemonade in first. The answers are simplified enough for most people (and children) to understand, but still scientific. The author, Mick O'Hare, writes in a jocular style and made me laugh out loud at many points - it definitely works as just...

It's all corrupt, y'ken?

Advantages: knowledge of legal system
Disadvantages: none

...Updated... It has to be said, Hare is a fantastic playwright. Although I was required to study Murmuring Judges as an A level text a few years ago, I would have enjoyed reading this play anyway. Murmuring Judges is the second play in David Hare's highly acclaimed trilogy about British institutions. Racing Demon, which won four awards as Play of the Year in 1990, was the first part of the trilogy and examined the Church. The Absence of War, a play about the Labour Party, completed the trilogy. Hare has most definitely done his research for this play...and his depiction of the three levels making up the Enlgish legal system couldn't have been portrayed in any better a way than it has been. If nothing else, you will gain a lot of knowledge about the legal system from this play, even if you don't care to understand the deeper...

The Bottom Rung Of The Hollywood Ladder

Advantages: witty and immensely readable
Disadvantages: too many books along the same theme - can it stand out from the others?

...with the little things that you let slide because they hardly seem worth making a fuss over. But somehow it culminates with you believing that black is white, right is wrong, and eventually your entire universe is topsy-turvy, ass over tits, and the lunatics have taken over the asylum.' ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In the last few years, there seemed to be a wave of chick-lit-does-jobs-from-hell books hitting our shores. This trend commenced with "The Nanny Diaries", continued in "The Devil Wears Prada" and appears again in "The Second Assistant" - the story of a girl who works at a premier Hollywood casting agency as second assistant to a hyperactive, drug-dependent agent. "The Second Assistant" is co-written by Clare Naylor and Mimi Hare. Clare Naylor may already be familiar to chick...

And now for my next experiment!

Advantages: interesting and fun
Disadvantages: none

...Have you ever wondered how it might be possible to fossilise your hamster? I can't say that it's really a problem which has kept me awake at night - but if you have been wondering about this you will probably be very interested in this book. How to Fossilise Your Hamster is the latest book to be brought out by The New Scientist and it is written by Mick O'Hare. You might be familiar with the books 'Does Anything Eat Wasps?' and 'Why Don't Penguins' Feet Freeze?' Well this is another book in a similar vein and as it tells you on the cover it contains lots of amazing experiments for the armchair scientist. A sample of some of the other experiments it covers are things such as how to weigh your own head, how to tell if a martini has been shaken or stirred, how to extract the iron from breakfast cereal and how to make eggs go green. I...

Loving Nutbrown Hares! :o)

Advantages: beautiful illustrations, simple repetitative story, sweet, makes you go ahhhh
Disadvantages: none

...As a primary school teacher with a young class I often get the chance to read many picture books to the children. It's great to see their little faces looking up at you and the book, totally enthralled in the story... and this book was something special. I'll start with the front cover. The colours used on the cover and throughout the book are pastel shades.Very calming. The picture shows the 2 characters in the book. Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Nutbrown Hare. The blurb on the back cover explains that Little Nutbron Hare is trying to tell Big Nutbrown Hare how much he loves him... but he finds it very difficult... The story goes that Little Nutbrown Hare is going to bed and tells Big Nutbrown Hare that he loves him this much... by stretching his arms out. Of course, Big Nutbrown Hare, being bigger, stretches further, so...
