I have been using this model (I've had different versions) for a number of years and never have I known one to fail; this is especially impressive considering I never turned them off when in use. ...Another review from me for a discontinued item, but may be useful if you're loking to pick up a bargain item on ebay... The D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router has a built-in ADSL modem - plugs directly into your ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)-enabled phone line, and with its 4 port 10/100Mbps ethernet switch, allows connections to lots of things (check out my other reviews for what it's connected to...). The DCHP server allows automatic allocation of IP addresses to all your network gubbins too - although I've set the IP's for my wireless accesspoint & print server to allow easier access to their brower based interfaces. The DSL-504 has a browser admin interface too for easy installation and setup, just type in the IP address (the default 192.168.0.1, as with most routers, but if it's changed you can always use the command line...

In plain English, this plugs in your phone socket and allows one or more PCs to share the connection via either a wired or wireless link. The modem part is ADSL2+ ready and should work with even the fastest ISP offerings out there which as at Dec 2006 are around 12mbps in the UK. ...I have set up 2 wireless networks with this router, it is incredibly easy to set up, literally just point and click. My home network includes ADSL 512kbps connection though Tesco Broadband - £17 a month uncapped, this comes in through the normal phone socket and through a 'microfilter' that seperates the internet from the normal phone line, you need to put one of these on every telephone point - one for each device, these cost about two pounds each - I have about 4 in the house. The line then comes into the back of the router and I have a wireless card in each of the 4 laptops I have around the house. The signal works well even through 4 or 5 brick walls, in a clear space it will work within 100m - even down the end of the garden.
