Nikon Coolpix S1

Advantages: Small, compact and very easy to use!
Disadvantages: Old, not as good as more recent cameras.

I've dropped this camera I can't count how many times, but it still works absolutly fine, albeit with a few nicks and scratches! The screen is more than adequate at 2.5 inches, and comes in handy when taking pictures and reviewing what you've captured; a bigger screen always helps! The camera only have a few buttons, all of which are self explanatory, and most useful of all, the actual capture button is the biggest of the lot, so it's obvious which one to press (something which i've often found difficult with some cameras) In terms of features, the S1 is quite well catered for. The Canon Poweshot S1 IS

Advantages: Powerful Zoom, Electronic Viewfinder (EVF), standard batteries

I considered buying a digital SLR but was put off by the price etc. I had been looking at large zooms for a while but I didn?t like the look of any and I had only just bought my A70. I then saw the Canon Powershot S1 IS in a magazine; it had 10x optical zoom, image stabilisation and 30fps video mode. It was all too tempting and soon got the better of my wallet!! I found it on the web for a reasonable price so it had to be done. When I received it I liked the look of it and although feeling awkward initially it began to fall into place soon enough. The zoom is fantastic as it can get you right into the action or the scene and with image stabilisation (IS) you don?t have to worry about keeping totally still as this takes care of it for you. Coolpix s1 - Lovely little compact camera

...I've had this camera or around three years and use it when I don't have or need my dslr. As a compact digital camera it's getting on in years now and has been surpassed by newer models, that said it's still a worthwhile purchase. Positives: At 5.1 megapixels it's more than enough for the purposes of most compact camera users (despite what most camera manufacturers would try to make you believe - more megapixels is not necessarily better). The camera is capable of filming at a reasonable quality (there is a switch on the back which you slide across to get the recording mode) and the camera can also record sound which is an advantage The LCD screen on the back of the camera is large (2.5") in comparison to the cameras overall size which is handy when it comes to taking the photo as there is no view finder. Nikon D90 - My Next 'Last' Camera

Advantages: Movies, LiveView, 12.3 mpixels, build quality, excellent lens range

..., although it?s noticeably slower if using LiveView, which also seems to take ages coming into focus. Lens Conversion Factor ? 1.5. This means that anyone used to the terminology of 35mm film-camera lenses will have to rethink the power of their existing lens collection. Under the old rule of thumb that a 50 mm focal length equalled 1 magnification, in digital days, it now represents 1.5 magnifications. This is because lenses don?t change, but the sensor of the D90 (and most other DSLRs) is about 66% the size of a 35 mm film negative (that?s about the same size as an APS negative ? remember them?). Hence my Nikkor 100 mm to 300 mm zoom is about 3 - 9 magnification (a power which would have needed a 150mm to 450 mm lens in ?celluloid days?) Note: All Nikon lenses ?fit?, even the lenses from my 1970s Nikon F, but don?t expect an old lens like this...

Review of Nikon D90

Good affordable option (Belinea 1730 S1)

Advantages: Cheap, simple to use, stylish
Disadvantages: Lack of resolution options

...As a school ICT teacher monitors are obviously important to me. We have kitted out our classrooms with the 1730s for a variety of reasons. Firstly they proved to be one of the best value models that our supplier could provide us with. I can't say exactly how much they cost us per unit but suffice to say it was cheap. When our inspection unit arrived we were delighted to find it had a hardened screen covering which means that we have had no failures due to over enthusiastic hands. The range of options are fairtly limited but the auto settings and auto adjust cope with most things we throe at it from a school point of view. The viewing real estate is good with a reasonably small bezel all around and built in speakers at the bottom of the unit. Style wise the silver effect fits in with most modern equipment and the large base...

320d - Potentially expensive failure

Advantages: Preformance, Economy, choice of trim, extras
Disadvantages: reliability - Expensive turbo failure, Rear Seat Space, Boot Space

...'s rivals all seem to have more copious amounts of both, so if you have a family (or are planning one) maybe this car is to avoided!. I bought the BMW 320d thinking that I was going to experience comfort and reliability, and within 1 month of buying a 2002 model, i was left bitterly disappointed on both accounts, especially as I found that the Turbo failure was a known problem and affected a large number of pre 2003 320D's So if you are planning on buying a 2nd hand model, then avoid anything below a 2003 model, unless you factor in the risk (and expense) of needing a new turbo. Prior to buying this model, I owned a Vauxhall which in comparison suffered no faults in the same league (or expense) as the BMW in the nine years in which I owned it, and was also more comfortable in comparison....

...the car decides when it needs to be serviced depending on how it is driven, however it’s usually around 14,000 miles during standard driving. The first service at 14,000 is a simple oil change followed by a main service at 28,000. The build quality is excellent, everything feels wonderful to touch and use. Review of BMW 320d

My experience of the Nikon D90 as an amateur photographer.

Advantages: Excellent picture quality, lots of useful features, well designed controls, great kit lens
Disadvantages: More expensive than some other DSLRs, quite big and heavy, limited movie mode

Features I've used Different exposure modes The D90 has four different modes that allow you to choose the shutter speed and aperture, allowing huge control over the final image. With basic photography knowledge, I have managed to create motion blur with long exposures and out of focus backgrounds with large apertures. I also enjoy using manual focus. Menus and buttons The menus are well designed and easy to navigate, but you won't need to use them much as most of the settings have dedicated buttons on the body (I find the delete button particularly useful). There are 2 wheels that do different things in different modes, they became useful after a couple of weeks when I had worked out what they did in each mode.
