...Another review from me for a discontinued item, but may be useful if you're loking to pick up a bargain item on ebay... The D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router has a built-in ADSL modem - plugs directly into your ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)-enabled phone line, and with its 4 port 10/100Mbps ethernet switch, allows connections to lots of things (check out my other reviews for what it's connected to...). The DCHP server allows automatic allocation of IP addresses to all your network gubbins too - although I've set the IP's for my wireless accesspoint & print server to allow easier access to their brower based interfaces. The DSL-504 has a browser admin interface too for easy installation and setup, just type in the IP address (the default 192.168.0.1, as with most routers, but if it's changed you can always use the command line...

...Back in March 2007, I bought my first laptop. This brought the number of computers in our house up to a grand total of three (my own desktop, my daughter's and the new laptop). It struck me that perhaps it was time to get networked. A hard wired network was out of the question, as I didn't want to start drilling holes and running cables everywhere, so a wireless solution seemed to be the way to go. I did a little research, as I'm not too au fait with this side of computing (though I have assisted in installing one before). Eventually in Pissy Werld (sorry, PC World), I found this package from D-Link. It consisted of the wirless router itself and a seperate antennae (destined for my daughter's bedroom PC). Also in the box were installation CDs for each of the two bits of hardware, a power supply and an additional ethernet cable.. So...

D-Link DSL-2542B - router is a HOT buy !

Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: It does not work correctly - at least mine

...Purchased it from Amazon and tried on our line. Main problem was: disconnecting! ADSL is perfectly fine and I am also an IT Technician. Old modem and others 'still' work fine and they are back in place. I was trying to modernise and get ready for ADSL2 an this modem should have worked fine on normal ADSL too and it gets dangerously hot in my view and after 2 emails with D-Link they did not reply any more to me avoiding the problem. So, I sent it back to Amazon and asked for a full refund - not Amazon fault and thinking that it was at 'only' £. 24.99 and no postage, that should have been a warning ! I hope for D-Link sake, it was only mine faulty and it is not a normal way or working for this modem. It does not mean other modems are faulty, mine was and I asked D-Link to send one out (just the modem) and pick up...

D link - A decent setup

...I have set up 2 wireless networks with this router, it is incredibly easy to set up, literally just point and click. My home network includes ADSL 512kbps connection though Tesco Broadband - £17 a month uncapped, this comes in through the normal phone socket and through a 'microfilter' that seperates the internet from the normal phone line, you need to put one of these on every telephone point - one for each device, these cost about two pounds each - I have about 4 in the house. The line then comes into the back of the router and I have a wireless card in each of the 4 laptops I have around the house. The signal works well even through 4 or 5 brick walls, in a clear space it will work within 100m - even down the end of the garden. The initial set up of the router caused a few problems and eventually had to set everything up manually, I found the user guide from the dlink website very helpful with sorting out the set up problems although this does give step by step instructions for various problems, I feel it is not suitable for people with little knowledge of computers. After the initial problems setting up, I have had few further problems with this product. ...The Netgear DG834PN is the latest version of the DG834 and combines an ADSL modem with a wireless router and 4 port switch. In plain English, this plugs in your phone socket and allows one or more PCs to share the connection via either a wired or wireless link. The modem part is ADSL2+ ready and should work with even the fastest ISP offerings out there which as at Dec 2006 are around 12mbps in the UK.
