D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DWL G520

Advantages: Very quick and easy to set up,
Disadvantages: Shorter than claimed 100m Range, Some configuration problems in Windows XP, No Linux Support

...After recently purchasing a new computer, I decided to jump on the bandwaggon of Wireless Networking. After a rather failed attempt with a previous setup , I discovered the new offering from D-Link - the DWL G520. I bought two for the fairly hefty price of about £120, and they installed without a problem. However problems started occuring when one of the computers was moved slightly further away, the cards failed to find each other. After a quick e-mail to the D-Link customer support this soon was fixed, by decreasing the speed to around 48Mb/s. This didn't make much of a change to the performance. However when i decided to move one computer downstairs over the opposite side of the house, the cards failed to find each other even by reducing the speeds to 1Mb/s, this distance is much less than 100m. Any e-mails sent to D-Link, were no...

Good choice for a wireless router

Advantages: Small, space-saving, good value for money and effective
Disadvantages: Can be intimidating at first, may need an extra cable

.... As I am running Windows XP I didn't need to install anything, so after following the very detailed step by step instructions found on the CD, I was almost done. After running a simple D-Link configuration wizard, I had wireless internet access on my laptop. File/printer sharing was a bit more tricky. After spending nearly two days unsuccessfully trying to get it sorted, I called in a professional friend who does this for a living, and who took one look before turning off my Sygate Pro Firewall, and then everything was sorted just fine. It was very difficult to configure the Sygate program to allow network access to the desktop, so I have uninstalled it. My friend assures me that the firewall security included with the router will be more than sufficient to protect my network, and I have also discovered that the Windows Firewall...

Solid 108G Wireless Card

Advantages: Good reception, good drivers, good file transfer speed
Disadvantages: No Vista support

...Having become very disillusioned with the stability of USB Wireless devices while doing more than just web browsing, I decided to turn to a PCI solution. My home router supports 108Mbps MIMO, so bought a PCI card which can make full use of this - namely the D-Link AirPlus XtremeG GWL G520M. At the time of writing this, they're available for £40-£50 from most online shops, but Tesco.com bucks this trend and is selling it for £19.97 plus £4.85 for next day delivery. A totally flawless purchase, which also earned me some Clubcard points. The device installs easily into a spare PCI slot. The enclosed design adds to the feeling of quality. The drivers on the CD are the latest available, and identical to the ones from Windows Update's online repository. Having owned 2 Atheros based USB devices before I was a little bit nervous...

A Reliable High Speed Wireless Router

Advantages: Full featured Wireless Router
Disadvantages: Requires TCP/IP knowledge to make full use of router

...The D-Link DI-624 has proved to be the reliable router as advertised, but only after the latest firmware upgrade. I've had this router for over a year now. The reason for its purchase was to setup a WiFi network during a conference. The DI-624 proved very disappointing upon purchase, when most of the wireless devices had problems connecting to it. All this changed when D-Link issued an updated firmware, which may be obtained from their website. PERFOMRANCE The latest experience with this router came during February 2005, during another conference. This time the router was setup once and forgotten during the whole of 15 days that the conference ran. Performance was very good. The DI-624 has a 4 port LAN connection as well. To these ports I had a total of 30 desktop computers connected (though other switches). At times there were...

DeLightful DLink

Advantages: 'Free' if you buy the DSL G604T :-)
Disadvantages: Becomes very hot, relatively large for a USB dongle

...offerings to consider. If you have a desktop then you may be better investing in a PCI card with an aerial extension for good reception/transmission. I think these USB dongles are best suited to retro-fitting laptops that came without WLAN or for those people dis-inclined to take the lid off of their desktop. Note: DLINK have released the DWL-G132 since this model, so if you want proprietory 108Mbps performance take a look at that....

PCI Wireless 802.11G card for desktop PCs

Advantages: Cheap-n-cheerful
Disadvantages: Slow connections and poor range with supplied antenna.

...Mobile 802.11g internal Mini-PCI card.) With the third party aerial I am pleased with this card. A properly configured BSD desktop PC offers a better service than that available from far more expensive wireless access points? once you?ve gone to the trouble to set everything up. Not a product I'd recommend to the non-technically inclined though....

"This D-Link has ceased to be, it is an ex-router"

Advantages: Easy to physically install
Disadvantages: Short working life, loses settings regularly

...Back in March 2007, I bought my first laptop. This brought the number of computers in our house up to a grand total of three (my own desktop, my daughter's and the new laptop). It struck me that perhaps it was time to get networked. A hard wired network was out of the question, as I didn't want to start drilling holes and running cables everywhere, so a wireless solution seemed to be the way to go. I did a little research, as I'm not too au fait with this side of computing (though I have assisted in installing one before). Eventually in Pissy Werld (sorry, PC World), I found this package from D-Link. It consisted of the wirless router itself and a seperate antennae (destined for my daughter's bedroom PC). Also in the box were installation CDs for each of the two bits of hardware, a power supply and an additional ethernet cable.. So...

G650+ G520+ and their US counterparts

Advantages: good performance
Disadvantages: no linux support *** no 108Mbps

...After some adds of the 108Mbps capabilities of the DWL-G650 and DWL-520 cards I decided to buy one. Unlucky me! I received the DWL-G650+ and DWL-520+. Apparently, these are the versions D-Link reserves for out-side the US. Trying to upgrade to 108Mbps as promised in the adds was unsuccessful. I didn't even find any info on the G650+ cards on the .COM website. Mails to D-Link remained unanswered. After some research in the newsgroups, I found out the following : The DWL-G650+ and DWL-520+ are using a different chipset than the G650 (the "+" is very important). You will not find this info on the D-Link website because the "+" has two major implications : 1:because the G650+ uses a cheaper chipset (Motorola) it has currently no 108Mbps support as its bigger brother does (G650, no "+"). 2:because of this chipset it has a very...

D-Link DSL G624T, There Back At It!

Advantages: Built-in Modem, Versitile, Easy to use / Setup, Vertical Stand
Disadvantages: None as of yet

...I have owned, sold and setup many routers over past year, the home wireless age is truly here. D-Link have now brought us the G624T!, At almost half the size of the previous models and now featuring a vertical stand, D-Link have certanly set the bar high. For many home users, the idea of setting up a wireless modem router may be scary, nothing could be simpler here because as usual D-Link have provided a very quick and simple method of installing your new router without the need to dial into the router though your browser and spend hours restarting and saving (Belkin!). It is also important to note that the G624T features 'click n connect' technology which in simple terms means that adding clients takes just two clicks! The G624T hosts many features, such as an integrated firewall for added security, 4 built-in 10/100Base...
