...The D-Link DWL-G650+ is a PCMCIA wireless (WiFi) card, which plugs into an available PCMCIA slot on a laptop. With this card, it wireless-enables a laptop, assuming it doesn't have built-in wireless already. The card cost me about £25 at the time but you may be able to find the same one cheaper now. Most of these seem to be in this price range if not less, since they are becoming redundant with new laptops already having built-in cards. It's a 802.11G card, which means theoretically, it can transfer 54Mbits/s but they never get to that speed. Most residential broadband connections nowadays only range up to 10Mbit/s. INSTALLATION I find the installation of this card has always been very easy. I just install the driver and software off the CD and then plug the card in. This literally takes minutes. ...Back in March 2007, I bought my first laptop. This brought the number of computers in our house up to a grand total of three (my own desktop, my daughter's and the new laptop). It struck me that perhaps it was time to get networked. A hard wired network was out of the question, as I didn't want to start drilling holes and running cables everywhere, so a wireless solution seemed to be the way to go. I did a little research, as I'm not too au fait with this side of computing (though I have assisted in installing one before). Eventually in Pissy Werld (sorry, PC World), I found this package from D-Link. It consisted of the wirless router itself and a seperate antennae (destined for my daughter's bedroom PC). Also in the box were installation CDs for each of the two bits of hardware, a power supply and an additional ethernet cable.. So...

D-Link DSM-520 - HD heaven, or hell ?

Advantages: Plays MP3, photo and movie over your network to your HiFi/TV.
Disadvantages: Stutters very badly on any HD content.

...Morning all, I finally decided last week to order the D-Link DSM-520 from Komplett.co.uk at £172 inc VAT & del. Reasons for buying : I wanted to stream HD movies, photos and music. Reviews have been mixed, admittedly, but seemed to indicate that this was the best of the bunch. I also looked at the Freecom and the Pinnacle before deciding. The DSM-520 arrived on Monday 4th Dec 2006, and was installed very easily and quickly. That part at least was painless. I used D-Link's own Media Server and also a demo version of TwonkyVision. I couldn't get M$ own Media Connect to work, and I still can't figure out why. Getting wireless working was strangely easy from my Netgear router, and I was offered WPA or WEP. However, when we bought a whole load of Magicard badge printers we found out after several painful days that these only worked with the D-link DP300u print servers due to some strange setting within the printer. Advantages: Easy & Quick Setup, Cheap, Game Mode

...I bought this router on eBay for £20. I used this to connect 2 computers to the same internet connection to save running another lead through to the new computer. I plugged the router in and connected it up to a computer and read the instruction manual which is very useful. It comes with a wizard that gives you step by step instructions on how to configure the router with your internet connection, so I ran this and it worked fine. The instruction manual is also very good in telling you how to set up different restrictions on the router to allow certain computers to connect to it wirelessly. After about 20 minutes I had both computers working with the internet connection. D link - A decent setup

...I have set up 2 wireless networks with this router, it is incredibly easy to set up, literally just point and click. My home network includes ADSL 512kbps connection though Tesco Broadband - £17 a month uncapped, this comes in through the normal phone socket and through a 'microfilter' that seperates the internet from the normal phone line, you need to put one of these on every telephone point - one for each device, these cost about two pounds each - I have about 4 in the house. The line then comes into the back of the router and I have a wireless card in each of the 4 laptops I have around the house. The signal works well even through 4 or 5 brick walls, in a clear space it will work within 100m - even down the end of the garden. Disadvantages: Becomes very hot, relatively large for a USB dongle

...offerings to consider. If you have a desktop then you may be better investing in a PCI card with an aerial extension for good reception/transmission. I think these USB dongles are best suited to retro-fitting laptops that came without WLAN or for those people dis-inclined to take the lid off of their desktop. Note: DLINK have released the DWL-G132 since this model, so if you want proprietory 108Mbps performance take a look at that....
