Digimax D103 - WOW!
Advantages: 10.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom, easy to use
Disadvantages: Rotated photos return to origional state
...After his camera broke whilst in Florida, my step dad bought a Samsung Digimax D103. He bought it mainly because it boasts 10.1 mega pixels, which produces a really good picture. I used this camera on a recent holiday to Lake Garda and I am very impressed with it.
The Features
The camera has many different features which I have listed below:
10.1 Megapixels
Optical 3x Zoom
Large 2.5" LCD
Easy Grip
ISO 1000
Powerful movie functions (MPEG-4 VGA 30fps)
4cm Macro & Auto macro
Manual Functions
User-friendly "Effect" button
Quick Print button
A full range of features and technical information can be found at the Samsung website: http://samsungcamera.co.uk/product/proview.asp?proluid=2461&catuid=11&ta bmenu=2#tabs

Click and Shoot
Advantages: Quality photos and video, small, loads of features
Disadvantages: Batteries, A bit pricy (although it is brand new)
...Being new to the world of digital cameras (I've been using disposable ones for the last 4 years!!) I had no idea what to look for or what is good, all I knew was the more mega pixels the better quality. I brought this camera in the January sales for over half price (so it said) at £130, with a RRP of £300. I will be honest, I have been absolutely delighted with it although whether I would have paid £300 for it is highly unlikely. For the more serious photographer maybe it is worth that, I don't know, as I just use it for taking photos of trips, special occasions or nights outs.
The D103 has a massive 10 mega pixels which give incredible picture quality. It also has a function where you can lower the number of mega pixels if you want in order to store more photos (e.g. take 6 or 7 mega pixel photos). Equipped with a 3x optical zoom...

DVD-RAM, Is it a Betamax in Sheeps clothing...
Advantages: Gigantic storage capacity, long shelf life for stored disks
Disadvantages: Not cheap, bit slow sometimes.
...as cheap as cd and can be bought for around £10 each. Interestingly I am told this is cheaper than the equivalent DVD-R disks. This is apparently because you can’t play DVD-RAM disks in a DVD movie player and the price of DVD-R disks (which will play in a DVD movie player) are being kept high to limit piracy.
On to the drive itself, the Panasonic LF-D103 is a little bit old now, alightly new model is available but I don’t think it boasts any major improvements. I can’t remember many problems with installation. The drive is a SCSI device (see my article on the Adaptec AVA 2904 SCSI controller to learn more about SCSI) and so only required connecting to my pc’s SCSI card.
The software that came with it is pretty funny, as it has obviously been written by people with a slender grasp of English (and Panasonic...

DVD-RAM a'lang a ding dong...
Advantages: Gigantic storage capacity, long shelf life for stored disks
Disadvantages: Not cheap, bit slow sometimes.
...The Panasonic LF-D201 is a SCSI DVD-RAM drive. Mmmm, I hear you say, what a bunch of lovely acronyms, if only I knew what they meant I might actually bother to read this article. Never fear all will be explained.
SCSI is the way in which it connects to your computer, for the pros and cons of this method, e.g. compared to USB, see my opinion on Adaptec’s AVA-2904 SCSI controller card and to a lesser extent my opinion on the Plextor 12/10/32S SCSI cd writer.
DVD-RAM is probably going to be the replacement for cd writers. It has an enormous capacity per DVD disk (up to 9.4 GB) and prices are starting to make it accessible to the likes of you and I. I have also discussed DVD-RAM and its pros and cons more extensively in my opinion on the older Panasonic LF-D103.
Having covered the basics in earlier opinions, I can now...

A Second Chance At Your Education
Advantages: flexible, well thought out courses
Disadvantages: not as much choice as at other universities, expensive
...in that field, I did D103, the Social Sciences foundation course.
When you begin, you have to complete a year's foundation course, depending on the type of subject you want to study in. After this, you have to earn the rest of the credits necessary for a degree, including a mixture of first, second and third level courses. You have an exam every year, as well as a set number of assignments to complete.
I found the courses very interesting and enjoyed being able to structure my studying around a pattern that suited me. I had no set times for lectures, just the odd seminar, which was voluntary, although it is better to attend if you can.
Of course, I had a certain amount of work to do, my course requiring a number of TMAs (tutor marked assessments - essays to you and me !) to be done over a period of time. These do take a lot...
