My Dream Machine CPU - P4 Prescott 2.8GHz

Advantages: Very Fast, Latest technology
Disadvantages: Not 64 bit like AMD, heat problems

...In the second on my series of computer component reviews, I would like to offer you the Pentium 4 Prescott 2.8Ghz. --------------------- Prescott? --------------------- Intel have produced 5 versions of their pentium 4 range. The first was the Willamite which would only accept RD RAM and was very short lived. The next was the Northwood, which is the one which sits in most computers nowadays. Then there's the ridiculously expensive Extreme Edition, for really silly gamers who want huge performance from their machines. And of course the P4-M for laptops. This processor is designed to give max performance on the move. But there's a new version on the block called Prescott. This, I decided, was the chip for me. Firstly, it's got the 800MHz front serial bus found in the later versions of the Northwood. The FSB speed makes...

2.8ghz Pentium 4 - Oldie but Goodie

Advantages: Cheap, Good Performace
Disadvantages: Not HT, L2 Cache could be bigger, Easy to install if you know how.

...a maximum clock speed of 5ghz supposedly, but they do run hotter in the first place, and overclocking generally means more heat. This 2.8ghz processor, is more than capable of running stably at 3.0ghz but be sure to have sufficent cooling and know what you're doing before you decide to overclock. REMEBER: It also voids your warrantee if anything should go wrong. ----------Stability---------- This is a very stable processor, I've had no faults with it in all the time i've used it. Naturally, stability may be compromised if there isnt adequet cooling the case, or if you've overclocked it. Being a 2.8ghz, you won't need anything fancy to cool it, just make sure theres enough room in the case for it to breath, and air flow is good. Make sure you've got a P4 high rated CPU fan, and the procesor should run perfectly happily. ----------Price...

P4 3.2GHz CPU with 512Kb Cache! Expensive but fast

Advantages: FAST, Retail box comes with fan, sticker, manual
Disadvantages: More expensive than Celerons, AMDs, etc

...made for Pentiums/Celerons and then deciding on an AMD won?t help. Is it worth it? Well, that depends on what you use your computer for. I can?t recommend a high-end computer capable of running the latest 3D games, 3D rending applications, etc. if all you?re going to be doing is surfing the web, checking emails and word processing a few letters every now and again. If that?s the case, then there is absolutely no point in spending that kind of money on this CPU. One with a lower clock speed or even a Celeron would be adequate but if you?re one of those people, who play the latest games, watch DVDs, capture video, etc then this CPU may be for you. If you have the money for it, and like to have high end systems, then I would recommend the P4 3.2GHz Northwood, otherwise, a 2.8GHz, 3.0GHz or 3.06GHz would also be adequate. You can get an AMD...

Dell 5150 3.06Ghz (P4 HT), 80Gb/512Mb DVD+R

Advantages: Speed, big HD, High res screen
Disadvantages: fan positioning, heat, heavy PSU

.... 512Mb RAM - expandable but enough for me. 80Gb hard drive. Good sized drive capable of storing loads of data such as MP3s, video clips etc. 1600x1200 screen. A beautiful big screen. Well lit and great to work with both for text and graphics/photos. The associated graphics card module is good enough and handles some games OK but that wasn't my main reason for buying so I can live with it being less than stellar. DVD+W DVD writer. I'd have preferred a DVD-R drive and 4X is a bit slow but it does the job. Other goodies: 56K modem Wireless network adaptor 2 X USB 1 X Firewire (a better bet for external hard drives etc) External Monitor socket with support for dual screen. I suspect the machine was originally destined for the corporate market as it was mercifully free of 'bonus' software cluttering it up. Apart from Norton AV...

Samsung V25 P4 2.8 GHz Notebook

Advantages: Quality, design, performance
Disadvantages: No printed User Manual!

...I lucked-into this purchase, having initially bought a Dixons ?generic? laptop with similar specifications, which ceased to function within four hours of getting it home. I replaced it at Comet with the V25 P4 2.8, for an additional £100. Thankfully, over the past four weeks the Samsung product has restored my feelings of pride in new ownership. The first thing to notice about this machine is its slick design and excellent build-quality. Its casing is nicely put together, and doesn?t flex or warp. The keyboard has a nice positive feel to it, doesn?t bounce about like those on ?cheapo? laptops ? and doesn?t leave you feeling crippled after several hours typing. The touch-pad is easy to use and enables precise cursor positioning (though I use a PS/2 mouse for preference). The TEAC combo CD/DVD-RW is reassuringly robust. Samsung are...

Frontera Sport 2.8TDi Diesel

Advantages: Economical, Strong, Cheap & Not Boxy
Disadvantages: it's too clean! it's Green & it's showing it's age!

...Vauxhall wanted to Break into the 4x4 Market, Isuzu wanted more Sales of their Mu/Amigo Range ... Say Hello to the Vauxhall Frontera The Frontera has been Produced under many Names Mu,Amigo,Rodeo by Vauxhall, Isuzu and Holden to name a few, But essentially it is an Isuzu but Manufactured in Britain by Vauxhall using British Steel with British Labour and a German built Engine, in fact the only Japanese parts are the electrics! Mine's an N (95/96) Reg, 2.8TDi in Fern Green (yeah, Bright Green :-s). It is a Short Wheel Base/Sport (SWB) 2 Door Model, so bear with me if I include/miss out things other Frontera Sports have or don't have. I Chose the Frontera (again) as it was Cheaper and known to me as Capable and it doesn't look as boxy as most 4x4s do these days! Plus it's relatively easy to get Parts. Not as easy as Land Rover...

Sigma EX DG 70-200mm f2.8 HSM Macro

Advantages: Build quality. Finish. Range. Fast maximum aperture.
Disadvantages: Image quality not as good as expected. Chromatic Aberration.

...-size reproduction, this lens doesn't! Although both the previous and latest models of this lens focus to a highly respectable 100cm (1 metre), this does not provide 1 to 1 life-size reproduction, merely 1 to 3.5 at 200mm focal length. I do wish all manufacturers would be a little more 'honest' in their description of their product's specifications? This lens has a large maximum aperture of f/2.8 which remains consistent throughout the zoom range and is fully compatible with the Sigma EX 1.4x or 2x APO Tele Converters, both of which maintain full AF (auto focus) facilities. The lens features Sigma's HSM (Hypersonic Motor) AF and is fast, accurate and very quiet. Construction is a combination of metal and high quality plastics, along with a fair amount of large pieces of glass. Light it isn't but considering the specification and the fact that it has...

P4P800-VM, Best P4 Micro-ATX Board.

Advantages: 800FSB P4 support, SATA, 8 USB2 connections, AGP 8X and 6ch Sound with SPDIF
Disadvantages: ASUS motherboard site can be down at times

...Without a doubt one of the most powerful feature packed Micro-ATX Boards ever to roll out of the ASUS factory. This small form factor motherboard using the intel i865 chipset which will take right up the the latest(at time of writing) 3.4 Ghz CPUs, as well as the newer Prescott CPUs with increased Cache and even Extreme edition CPUs. Add to that an impressive array of onboard features including: 8 USB2 Ports(4 on the rear I/O shield, and PCI plate which will allow you to connect a further 4 from USB headers which are useful for cases with front usb connectors) Onboard 10/100 Lan. For connecting to a home network or router for internet access or file sharing. Dual Channel DDR 400. Dual channel is basically a way of putting in two identical sticks of rm, for example 2x 512mb crucial 3200, and the motherboard splits...

Capri 2.8i rocket

Advantages: A real classic car, cheaper at present
Disadvantages: Rust and boy racers (lol) and Police

...I am a bit bias of these but i will try my best to be fair, honest and proactive in my approach. Lets get it straight from the start if you require Air con, Rear seat comfort, good mpg, quiet running etc Do Not Buy This Car. But if you require pure grunt and power this is a must, they made several Capri's and this model was for me 2nd best as 1st place has to go to the Mk 1 RS 3.1 GXL these are the bees knees when it comes to power and head turning, but back to the 2.8, i have had many of these and if you don't mind the sometimes hard wallowy ride then this is for you, the 5spd gearbox model is slightly, very slightly slower than the 4spd Cologne engine version, as most 5spd version were Essex engined machines still beasts in their day but my personal preference is the Cologne. These cars are not for amature drivers nor are...

Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD Ltd (Auto)

Advantages: Has many refinements as standard
Disadvantages: Paintwork is very soft. Diesel is noisy in town driving

...I bought a Jeep 2.8 CRD Ltd after reading a number of reviews in Jan 2007, and now I wish I never had. Prior to this I had Shoguns and other equivalent 4x4's but fancied a change and went for the Cherokee. The drive is fine, comfortable and does have many refinements. However I have had a number of teething problems which it has been in and out for to the dealer. Aircon never worked went in for twice - Key continually stuck in the ignition lock and wouldn't come out no matter where you put the automatic box. Often couldn't get it out of park mode even with much pressure on the brakes. Brakes often felt soft and peddle went down on to the floor when stood still - techniciaian came and advised there was a problem - went into the garage where they advised it was normal!! I bought a black one and would never be so silly again. I...
