...I bought one of these 3 weeks ago to go on holiday. I also bought a spare battery off ebay (£11). I am a bit new to camcorders, only having an ancient Sony before. So having fiddled around with the settings managed to produce the first tape in absolute silence. So then I read the book, and got the soung working again, (my fault) The 740 is AMAZING. even the standard (808)battery will run off 2 tapes before giving up. and the bigger (815)spare battery lasted the rest of the holiday which took another 3 tapes (60 min) and didnt run out. Back home connecting to the PC was easy and I just let Pinnacle Studio do all the work. Editing is simple using it. And the results were great. Silent ninja

Advantages: Fast, quiet, great RAID 0 performance

...I received two of these (60Gb) as replacements for my previous disk (DiamondMax D740X 60Gb, which I also review here on Ciao) which were faulty. I didn't really get off to a good start, as one as of the disks was dead on arrival. It failed to be recognised by the BIOS on any of my machines, and the only controller which so much as acknowledged the drive's presence was my HighPoint 374. It appeared as a 'Maxtor CALYPSO' (the drive's codename), and the controller failed to boot. This indicated an electronics problem and duly, I returned it. On receiving my replacement drive, I striped it together as RAID 0 with the other one and crossed my fingers. From here on out it was nothing but good news! Maxtor HD reliable

...Bought a Maxtor D740X 40GB at the beginning of 2003 from Savastore.com for: its 7200 rpm fast spinning speed and its SMART technology for monitoring any faults that are developed during the years. Also, it has ultra-DMA 133 interface which is faster than the average ultra-DMA 100. So far the drive is reliable and still working without any problem. Since I bought it as an OEM hard drive, there was no documentation attached to it. Worry not. 1. The master-slave jumper setting is pretty obvious on the drive. 2. To confrim that you can download a comprehensive manual (in PDF format) of this drive from the official Maxtor website.
