No Bedroom Should Be Without
Review of Pure Digital Sonus 1XT Talking DAB Radio by
craigwstewart
Advantages: Looks great, good sound quality, good for blind/partially sighted, includes alarm.
Disadvantages: Only mono speaker
...I love music and I love gadgets so a DAB digital radio suits me great. There are more and more digital radios out on the market these days which means choosing the best one can be difficult. It can be made more difficult if you are unsure exactly what DAB means.
~~WHY DAB?~~
DAB stands for digital audio broadcasting and it is the modern way to listen to the radio. Most people currently tune in a station on FM but with DAB there is no tuning needed. The interference which disturbs FM reception (caused by radio signals bouncing off buildings and hills) is eliminated within DAB signals. DAB radio sets have processors which filter out interference and correct signal errors. An advantage of using DAB is that the name of the station you are listening to, along with the song and other information can be displayed on the DAB radio.
I now wish...

Crystal Clear Reception for Phillips DAB Radio
Review of Philips AJ5100 by
jez.atkinson
Advantages: Smart design; easy to use front panel controls; clear, bright sound
Disadvantages: Preset buttons can be difficult to find; handle looks like metal but is actually plastic.
...Digital Audio Broadcasting, known as DAB for short was developed by a consortium of manufacturers and broadcasters. Pioneered by the BBC, DAB radio broadcasts were first aired in 1995. Since then many new radio channels have joined the DAB revolution and wherever you can receive DAb broadcasts you will find a much wider range of stations to choose from than on a traditional FM radio.
By sending the radio signal digitally, listeners get crytal clear, interference free broadcasts of CD like quality. DAB radios have proved to be especially popular in the UK, with many portable units being housed in retro style casings designed to link this new technology to the bygone wireless radio heyday of years gone by.
The Philips AJ5100 radio eschews this retro approach for a clean, modern design with a brushed 'metal' look one-piece handle...

A good quality radio!
Review of Goodmans GSR85DAB by
kompendium
Advantages: Cheaper than other radios, perfect for home use
Disadvantages: Sound quality is ok, not as good as a hi-fi though!
...This dab radio is good if you just want a simple radio for home use, you can't turn it up blasting loud so it would be no good for a disco, but would you really want to use the radio for a disco. The sound quality is fine, i'm not going to say its as good as my hi-fi, but it is fine for a radio.
One thing that i like about dab radios is you don't have to set the time, it just gets it from somewhere through the digital radio signal i suppose.
You can set 10 presets for dab and 10 for fm.
The look of it is ok, especially if you like black, personally i prefer those wooden ones but they tend to be dearer, if you want a good quality radio but you don't want to spend to much this is perfect.
Unfortunately i can't remember how much i paid for it, all i remember is that it was cheaper than alot of other dab radios, i think i got it from...

Mikomi FM DAB Radio: A Cheap and Easy Alternative
Review of Mikomi FM DAB Radio by
salar15
Advantages: Very easy to use; Great quality of sound; Stylish looks
Disadvantages: Not much in the way of extra features
...The Mikomi FM DAB Radio pretty much does exactly what it says on the packaging. Coming in a refreshingly simple yet stylish looking casing, the product looks professional, and the performance it delivers reflects that, with the reception and quality of sound both crystal clear.
The radio also offers exemplary ease of use, with five possible preset stations, and an easy to navigate and clearly marked button system that manages to be self-evident and yet understated. What is more, all of this is offered for an astoundingly cheap price; at pretty much £25, this is the cheapest DAB digital radio that I am aware of on the market.
So if you are bemoaning the crackly reception of your old FM radio, the Mikomi FM DAB radio is a brilliant investment with fantastic value for money. You aren't going to get any more out of it than that...

Grundig Opus DAB Radio
Review of Grundig OPUS by
TWIN68
Advantages: Easy to Use
Disadvantages: mains only
...I was lucky enough to receive this fine DAB radio for Christmas.
It was so simple to set up and within minutes i was listening to clear interference free music.
With a wide range of radio stations available i was able to listen to jazz one minute and the latest chart music the next.
You can preset up to 10 of your favourite DAB stations which saves a lot of time!
The Grundig Opus is also a neat looking radio which would not look out of place in any room in the house.
Later i listened using headphones and the sound was near cd quality with absolutely no interference.
All in all the Grundig Opus is great value for anyone looking for a digital radio for under £60 for everyday use in the family home....

Great AC/DC DAB/FM Radio in a 'kitchen' format
Review of Sony XDR-S 20 DAB by
deputydawg
Advantages: Unit and interface design leaves most others in the shade
Disadvantages: Heavy with the six C batteries needed for power-hungry DAB
...Are you a DAB fan? The Sony XDR-S 20, retailing at around £80, is one of the best current designs on the market for a kitchen radio.
As a family we have four DAB radios - two mono and two stereo - and really appreciate the quality and choice of digital radio. Channels such as BBC7, OneWord and FUNradio for the children are a real bonus, and while many households have other ways of experiencing radio via set-top box or the Internet, a compact and mobile radio is the most flexible.
This Sony has the trademark clean styling and consumer design for which the brand is best known. You will probably want to leave it on AC power for regular use: you may have heard that DAB is far more power-hungry than FM, and while the six C batteries give very respectable battery life compared with our other radios, it doesn't really compare with the weeks...

DAB tuner - BAD move or better?!
Review of Cambridge Audio AZUR 640T by
NomisG
Advantages: Possibilty to get huge improvement in sound quality
Disadvantages: May need a proper aerial. May not work in your house.
...In the interests of disclosure, I used to sell these products.
What is this little beauty, you may ask? Well it's a DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast) tuner. It will also receive conventional AM and FM (until the switch off (in the UK, at least) starts next year (2008)) signals. Like all the Cambridge Audio Azur range, it comes in black or silver. It's well specked for connectivity and its solidly built.
Now, until I started selling Hi-Fi, DAB hadn't really crossed my radar. A friend had a DAB portable radio and I know some cars have had them for a while.
So what is DAB? I'm going to have to get a little bit technical and I don't want to patronise or bore, but I will try to keep it simple.
Firstly, its digital broadcasting. Remember the old analogue cellphones? They used to get a bit scratchy when you were too far away from the base...

Great sound and design.
Review of Ferguson FRG810D by
alecshort
Advantages: Crystal clear sound
Disadvantages: Dab radio needs a strong signal
...as well with my own sony earphones.
DAB radios use digital signals which do away with any background noise, giving you cd quality sound. You do however need to be in an area which has good signal strength.
You can check the stations that are available in your area by logging onto the internet Dab sites and entering your postcode.
DAB has a lot of extra stations you can't access on normal radio, I reckon in the London area there must be about 50!
I use my player on the train and apart from when I'm in a tunnel
still manage to get a good reception.
Overall I found this a great player, the sound and clarity is brilliant. you should be able to pick this player up for about £70
and once you experience DAB sound you will never want to go back to am/fm broadcasts....

Review of the Roberts Gemini RD3
Review of Roberts Gemini 3 DAB Radio by
TonyOg
Advantages: Stylish, Excellent Music Sound Quality
Disadvantages: Curious Distortion on Speech, Loud Hum from Mains Adapter, No Clock
...I bought Roberts Gemini RD3 (my first DAB Digital Radio) to add to the growing collection of Roberts Radios in my house. I generally ADORE Roberts Radios - their sound quality, build quality, features and reliability have always really impressed me.
However, I have to say the Roberts Gemini RD3 was a bit of a disappointment.
Its main good points are the typical Roberts Build Quality & Looks, and its EXCELLENT sound quality when it comes to playing pop music; it has no problem belting out the bass!
However, I found a number of quirks with the radio which have left me rather indifferent towards it. Maybe I'm too fussy, but my main gripes.....
* There is a curious distortion (like a harsh gravelly tone) when listening to mens voices on the DAB Tuner - a real pain when listening to Radio 4 and other speech-based stations; however...

Panasonic SCPM32DAB Micro System
Review of Panasonic SC-PM 32 by
zoe_uk302
Advantages: Price, sound quality, looks great, text display shows artist and title of song
Disadvantages: Number of aerials!
...Panasonic SCPM32DAB Micro System
This is my first DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radio and I have to say so far I am impressed!
I was looking for a simple, inexpensive yet stylish DAB system for my kitchen. After a scout around the big electronic chains (Currys, Comet, etc) and a spot of research on the internet I settled on the SCPM32DAB by Panasonic.
The reasons for choosing the SCPM32DAB were:
Price (the system had been reduced from £130 to £100)
Drawer loading CD, rather than the cheaper top loading style
Integrated DAB radio
Looks! Nicely finished in a brushed steel effect
Sound quality, some small systems suffer from poor sound quality, this one certainly doesn't have that problem.
Once I got the system home I was keen to start using it straight away, but firstly I needed to set...
