Psion Wavefinder - UK DAB Digital Radio receiver
Review of Member Advice on Digital Radio by
sachab
Advantages: Better sound quality, new digital only stations, fewer adverts, one touch mp2 or mp3 recording
Disadvantages: Cost, reception problems, Wavefinders buggy original software
...clearly notice the difference.
The sound on some stations (like the BBC onces) are not compressed on DAB like they are on FM so the sound quality is much better, although others seem to use just as much compression (volume level is music is always the same), which is disappointing since because digital radio has no hiss or fade, quiet sounds can still be heard clearly.
Anyway, enough on digital radio. What about the Wavefinder. When in its benefit it is the cheapest receiver on the market at the moment. But not particularly cheap relative to other products. At £299, its around 3 times what it would cost you to get a digital satellite system installed to get a similar number of stations in similar quality. However, it does have additional text information (for instance naming the song being played and songs coming up on Core, Heart, Planet...

A DAB hand
Review of Pure Digital Sonus 1XT Talking DAB Radio by
LegendaryMrDude
Advantages: Excellent sound; Excellent Alarm; Easy Operation; iVox
Disadvantages: Doesn't take batteries; Mono only; Expensive
...Radios are a funny thing. They've been around for ages and everyone pretty much takes them for granted. But actually there's quite an interesting history behind them. Don't worry though - I'm not here to bore you with the history of the radio. Oh no… I'm here to bore you with my thoughts on the latest incarnation of "radio" in our household.
LegendaryMrsDude likes the radio. She used to have a combination cd/cassette/radio that sat blaring out the latest hits from the popular beat combos of the day. Until it failed. And then she was without music. So top of the Christmas list this year was a new radio.
I'd hear a lot about the latest innovation - Digital Audio Broadcasts or DAB for short. It promised much easier tuning, crystal clear reception and a broader range of stations. It sounded too good to be true. Reception in our house...

Pure Tempus-1 DAB Digital Radio
Review of Pure Digital Tempus 1 by
checkb4buying
Advantages: stylish, simple, clever extra features
Disadvantages: Can't take it with me everywhere!
...Pure Tempus-1 DAB Digital Radio
Plug it in and it does the rest, it automatically finds the stations and tells you all about them with scrolling text on the LCD screen. Information that be accessed includes the station name, frequency, signal quality and a text summary of the current programme.
The main attraction of DAB radio to us was no static and the digital only channels such as BBC Radio 7 (comedy and stories), Passion FM (world music plus environmental ‘tit bits’). We have not been disappointed with these.
The sound from the radio is excellent, not at all ‘tinny’ for such a small radio. Reception is generally All or Nothing and you can check how your local area is served by digital radio at http://www.pure-digital.com/ by typing in your post code. They will tell you which stations you will be able to receive...

Roberts Gemini 3 Portable DAB/FM Radio
Review of Roberts Gemini 3 DAB Radio by
sralph
Advantages: Excellent reception, audio quality
Disadvantages: Expensive
...Background
I have enjoyed DAB digital radio for sometime after being treated to a Pure Evoke1 for a Christmas present. A radio I am delighted with, but unfortunately, although its light and portable it relies on the mains supply to work.
Here in Kent where I live a new Multiplex is currently being launched so I decided that I would now like a DAB radio that was a bit more portable having a battery provision
The Contenders
As some of you will know if you read my first review, I bought an Acoustic Solutions Portal 2 DAB/FM radio from Argos. This radio was great value at only £69.99 at the moment. Unfortunately this proved to be quite deaf and flatly refused to receive stations that my nearby Evoke1 radio would happily receive.
So it was back to Argos for a refund.
The nearest contender was the Bush TR2003 DAB built in a retro style...

Mikomi FM DAB Radio: A Cheap and Easy Alternative
Review of Mikomi FM DAB Radio by
salar15
Advantages: Very easy to use; Great quality of sound; Stylish looks
Disadvantages: Not much in the way of extra features
...The Mikomi FM DAB Radio pretty much does exactly what it says on the packaging. Coming in a refreshingly simple yet stylish looking casing, the product looks professional, and the performance it delivers reflects that, with the reception and quality of sound both crystal clear.
The radio also offers exemplary ease of use, with five possible preset stations, and an easy to navigate and clearly marked button system that manages to be self-evident and yet understated. What is more, all of this is offered for an astoundingly cheap price; at pretty much £25, this is the cheapest DAB digital radio that I am aware of on the market.
So if you are bemoaning the crackly reception of your old FM radio, the Mikomi FM DAB radio is a brilliant investment with fantastic value for money. You aren't going to get any more out of it than that...

Digital radio for the car.
Review of Revo IN-CAR DAB Digital Radio by
angelwild
Advantages: Cheap upgrade.
Disadvantages: A bit fiddly to install.
...Great product but fitting it took a bit of figuring out. Managed it in the end though. I recommend it as it allows you to keep your existing in car stereo and add the additional functions of digital radio. It is well worth upgrding to as the FM radios are going to be phased out shortly.
To buy one search on either ebay or amazon, they vary in price form around the £40 mark up to around £200.
If you arent competent to fit it yourself it can cost about £50 fitting charge.
It is a silver grey colour and should fit in with the interiors of most cars.
I recommend you buy the pouch to store the head unit to prevent it scratching when you leave the vehicle.
Thoroughly recommended and cheaper than buying a complete new digital stereo....

Great AC/DC DAB/FM Radio in a 'kitchen' format
Review of Sony XDR-S 20 DAB by
deputydawg
Advantages: Unit and interface design leaves most others in the shade
Disadvantages: Heavy with the six C batteries needed for power-hungry DAB
...Are you a DAB fan? The Sony XDR-S 20, retailing at around £80, is one of the best current designs on the market for a kitchen radio.
As a family we have four DAB radios - two mono and two stereo - and really appreciate the quality and choice of digital radio. Channels such as BBC7, OneWord and FUNradio for the children are a real bonus, and while many households have other ways of experiencing radio via set-top box or the Internet, a compact and mobile radio is the most flexible.
This Sony has the trademark clean styling and consumer design for which the brand is best known. You will probably want to leave it on AC power for regular use: you may have heard that DAB is far more power-hungry than FM, and while the six C batteries give very respectable battery life compared with our other radios, it doesn't really compare...

Radio of the future
Review of Technika DAB-206 by
cooldude28
Advantages: Sound, quality, features, presets, technology, design
Disadvantages: None
...:::::Intro:::::
I had always wanted a DAB Digital Radio. Since around 2002 I had wanted one because my favourite radio station could only be picked up on a digital radio. I didn't acturlly get one until 2006. But around the time that they came out which was around 2002, they were quite pricey. When looking in the shops at the prices for these new digital radios, they were around £100. Believe it or not. I listen to alot of music, and I did want my own radio for my room, and one that could pick up my favourite digital-only radio station which you could not get on the regular anologue FM radios.
:::::When I bought one:::::
I finally got a DAB Digital Radio as a gift. It was in November 2006, and I thought, at last. I had seen the model that was on the box in stores, and was a quite nice looking one. I plugged it in straight away...

Upgrade your car stereo to DAB.
Review of Revo IN-CAR DAB Digital Radio by
wildtinsey
Advantages: Cheap upgrade.
Disadvantages: Can be fiddly to install.
...on the internet for the best price.
A great feature of the revo is that there are a few accessories available such as a remote control, a case, a second car kit to transfer between multiple vehicles and a home docking station to use it through a home hifi or computer. The final gadget available is the one allowing you to use it as a personal DAB radio. I have recently bought the case as i requires a way of protecting it whiilst out of the car.
The quality of the reception is excellent but can vary on the part of the country you live in. When i first tuned it in i was able to obatin over 30 differerent stations.
It is a silver and black unit and would fit in with the interiors of most cars on the market today.
The unit comes with an internal DAB aerial that you install on the windscreen on the passenger side but if you have a heated screen or a sun...

A reason to go digital - BBC Radio 7
Review of BBC Radio 7 by
AlexWales
Advantages: Excellent mix, fills a clear gap
Disadvantages: Only on digital
...I was going to wait a bit before posting this, but I've been itching to spread the word!
Well, from the category and the title you'll have worked out that BBC7 is one of the BBC's national radio stations. However, I'm guessing that the majority of you haven't heard it yet.
BBC7 launched quietly in mid December 2002 on all the BBC's digital platforms. You can receive it via DAB Digital Radio, Sky, the BBC website or - as I do - from a Freeview digital TV box.
So, what can you hear on BBC7? Well, unlike nearly all the other national stations, it does not play music of any type. Instead, it is entirely speech-based. However, unlike Radio 4 and Radio 5, its purpose is solely for entertainment.
Up till now, Radio 4 has been the place to find BBC Radio comedy and drama. It has given us some excellent programmes: Goodness Gracious...
