...This children's book is part of a series about the eponymous hero and his friends. He is a teenage boy who has the knack of causing and getting into trouble. However, it is never done in a malicious way but rather by going too far with his inquisitive nature or simply by being careless. He then turns into the hero by resolving the problems caused by his actions. This provoked a spark of enlightenment in my daughter. She cried: "That is why the book is called Danny Dunn!" In essence, he is a normal teenage boy, which makes him easily identifiable and empathetic. His upbringing in a single parent family with his mum working for the local boffin, Professor Bullfinch, gives him that extra pressing for scientific knowledge. Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. ...In a break from convention, I'm not going to do a track by track listing of this album. It's just not that sort of album. It's got individual songs on it, but they mesh together and interweave so seamlessly, and each song is so difficult to categorise or explain, that to try and talk about each song would make even less sense than what I have just written.... I bought this album a few years ago after hearing a snatch of a single song from it, and it is one of the best albums I have ever heard. I like it when that happens. Jo Bartlett and Danny Hagan are "It's Jo and Danny". Their sound is like nothing you will have ever heard before. ...I have been a fan of Danny Wallace for quite a while now - ever since I read his collaboration with Dave Gorman on the book 'Are You Dave Gorman?' Since then Danny has gone on to write a number of books of his own, all based on mad boyish escapades which manage to take him to far flung places and sometimes land him in a bit of bother! His latest book that I have read - Friends like These - is written in the same vein, although it does have some quite thought provoking and poignant moments too. As he writes this book, Danny is fast approaching his thirtieth birthday which seems to be causing him a bit of a crisis. Although he is happily married to Lizzie, they own their own home and he has an interesting career; there is something about this milestone that causes him a lot of angst. ...Yes Man by Danny Wallace is the book on which the recent Jim Carey film was (very) loosely based. I'll be honest, I watched the film first and I had a mild inclination to then read the book. I was intrigued by the philosophy to the point where I contemplated trying it out for a week (saying "Yes" to anything and everything), if I was less lazy and more confident I would have. Perhaps I still will. When I noticed a friend at work was reading the book I asked if I could borrow it. He's a very slow reader, so I had to wait as the weeks ticked by, but finally he leant it to me a week or so ago. It's taken priority over my other books so I can return it to him quickly. Part heroic, part self-absorption

Advantages: Well-written, two engaging characters
Disadvantages: Ins and outs of relationships get dull after a while

...too much at times. He barely knew the girl before leaving to fight, yet after three years is still harbouring the fantasy that he loves her. Some may find this romantic and appealing; I'm way too cynical and think that he was merely in love with the idea of someone he thought he knew. It is clear from the start (and indeed says on the back of the book) that there is somehow a link between Danny's and Moritz's story, although it is never made clear exactly what this connection is. I think this was a clever idea, because it really did maintain my interest through the parts of the book that were a bit more hard-going than others. However, towards the end, I do think it was dragged out a little too far and I just wished the author would get on with things.
