Unpredictable Green World of Dar Williams

Advantages: Modern folk with profound lyrics and beautiful melodies.
Disadvantages: Not widely available

...I first became aware of Dar Williams when I bought the Joan Baez CD, Gone from Danger. Dar Williams had written a number of tracks on the CD and also provided backing vocals on some. I was very impressed by this singer / songwriter and promised myself I would seek out more of her work. It took me some time but I finally came across this CD, "The Green World". The CD is the fourth of Dar Williams solo albums released in 2002 by Razor & Tie and I was not disappointed. The CD is enjoyable for many reasons. Each of the songs is a delight to listen to instilled with the folk-song storytelling quality. Dar's voice is pleasing and clear; at times wistful, at others mournful, sometimes childlike and sometimes whimsical. The lyrics are amazing and original; they are catchy yet the underlying sentiment is often profound; somewhat ambiguous...

Dar es salaam- Haven of Peace

Advantages: Fluttering Palms & Sandy Beaches
Disadvantages: Beware the pick pockets

...Having lived in Dar Es salaam(Tanzania) for almost 25 years till I moved to London, it was nothing strange that I felt "homesick" and wanted to revisit the city where I had spent my child hood and having finished studies spent part of my youth. The very thought of going to Dar es salaam, made me tingle with pleasure at the memories of the warm and lush beaches and cool evenings, with wind rustling through the palm trees The vast open plains dominate much of Tanzania and you suddenly feel very, very small. And so you should. You have just joined one of the largest, wildest animal populations in the world. Wildebeest, Monkey, Antelope, Lion, Cheetah, Crocodile, Gazelle, Flamingo - you name them, Tanzania has them. Tanzania offers some of the best wildlife spotting opportunities on the continent. Famous parks such as the Serengeti...

Peace and Tranquility in a Busy City

Advantages: Peaceful, pretty with wonderful owners and staff. One of my favourite places ever.
Disadvantages: No tea making facilities. Early morning call to prayer gives a swift awakening

...What kind of traveller are you? Do you like to spend your holiday budget on a luxury villa somewhere, with all the mod cons, or do you prefer more Spartan accommodation, on the basis that you're just renting somewhere to rest your head at night? Usually, I fall into the latter category - as much as I like luxury, I cannot justify spending large sums of money if I'm visiting a city in order to get out and about, and discover the culture and meet the people. However, I've just returned from Marrakech, and found a happy medium. Riad Dar Sbihi is in the northern part of the Medina (old city) in Marrakech. A riad is a traditional Moroccan dwelling. It is laid out around a central courtyard, with the rooms communicating with the courtyard, but not with each other. The result of this design is that you step from a bustling (and dusty...

A Phone worth having

Advantages: small and light yet quite robust
Disadvantages: genuine covers are expensive. Flip piece on bottom easily broken

...I bought a second hand 5210 back in October last year. And I have not regretted it in any way! It's a robust phone - small enough to fit in your pocket yet not so small as you may have trouble using text features. The menu is straight forward - just like all Nokias - if you can use one, you can work any of their phones. I like the easy change covers though the flip on the bottom which protects the charge area is prone to coming off. A great little phone - useful for those with outdoor jobs - they are splash proof - mine has been in my pocket on many a rainy day - with no problems! Dar I say, it's small enough to tuck inside your waistband without discomfort - if you dont have a pocket handy! Well recommended by me!...

Lost Childhood (to the children of Iraq)

Advantages: Not many I'm afraid
Disadvantages: quite a few

..., confused, And you will curse, and you will curse and you will curse?

Mix and match scents? Not any more!!

Advantages: Matches with scents from the impulse range.
Disadvantages: Can leave white marks on darker clothes.

...This is great if you often use impulse body sprays. The fact that you can get different fragrances of the anti persperant which can be matched to the body sprays is great, as you never get that disjointed, mix and match smell that can sometimes occur. For example I bought the Godess anti persperant and body spray and use them together for a pleasant, yet not overwhelming smell. The anti persperant also works well too, offering you long lasting protection throughout the day, without having to carry the bottle round with you. You also get a lot for your money, as the bottle is quite large and you don't have to use a lot to give you excellent protection. However, be careful with dar clothes, as it can tend to leave faint white marks if used in too high a quantity. Overall, a great smelling, good value buy....

The monk who sold his Ferrari gives us another training

Advantages: Tells several good morals about life, very intresting character of Julian Mantle.
Disadvantages: The story is quite hackneyed.

...This book tells us a story of one successful businessman called Dar Sanderson. He's a middle - aged rich hotel business owner, experiencing huge crisis in his personal life. His painful divorse with wife led him to a spiritual degradation, constant depression and loathing for his life... All these trouble day by day took him to abyss and one day finally, made him point a gun to himself... But suddenly, the last second before pulling the trigger, some mystical power stopped him from suicide. That was a main breakdown in his life. After that it turned to a new way, leading to a happiness. Soon after his suicide attempt, Dan Sanderson met monk Julian Mantle ( the same monk from another Sharma's book "The monk who sold his Ferrari" ). The monk offered Sanderson his help in finding joy of life again and became his teacher. Mantle took his...

Stunning, Beautiful, Awesome...

Advantages: Beaches, Sun, Culture, Food
Disadvantages: Not that easy to get around unless you have experience

...As part of a world challenge expedition to Tanzania i got the chance to visit this awesome island for 5 days at the end of our month long stay in the country doing volunteer work and trecking. It was very much a last minute decision to go there as the east coast of Tanzania was much more convenient and cheaper. The one thing on the side of the small island of Zanzibar was the awesome beaches and culture which as we found out was much different to that on the mainland. My stay was split into three parts. First an overnight stay in the Hotel Marine in Stone town (the capital of the island), secondly a three night stay in the Matenuve Bahariri beach bungalows on the north east side of the island. The final part was another overnight stay in the Hotel Marine. Because the boat journey from Dar es Salaam was fairly long we got a short...

No Danger that you will enjoy this

Advantages: Expressive and emotive folk songs. Sung from the heart.
Disadvantages: The cover is unispiring and does not reflect the album's intent..

...Joan Baez is renowned as an American folk singer and political activist and I have admired both her musical ability and ideals since I first discovered her work in the 1960s. Baez began singing traditional folk songs in the coffee houses of Cambridge, Massachusetts and went on to perform some of her own compositions as her popularity grew. Baez was the first folk singer to take the genre into the best-selling charts. She has continued to champion folk music and in this album, ?Gone from Danger? first released in 1997 on the Capitol Artists label, she highlights the work of the newer folk songwriters Dar Williams, Sinead Lohan, Richard Shindell and Betty Elders. The album was re-released on the Grapevine label (my copy) in 1999 and on the Castle Music label in 2004. The album can be purchased for as little as £4.99 and is available...

Review of Gone From Danger - Joan Baez

Proof That Bigger Doesn't Necesarily Mean Better

Advantages: Looks great from the outside
Disadvantages: Everything on the inside

...the slowest to ever work in a hotel and this is not an understatement. After twenty minutes fussing over keys we eventually got to the point where we could check in (at 5pm in the evening) but this was something we soon came to regret. If you thought the reception area was lacklustre then you may have to hold your tongue when you approach the interior areas of the hotel (mainly the hallways, stairs, lifts, bedrooms etc.) With limited decoration the whole hotel seems dull and uninteresting (which is such a shame when you come to think how much money must have been splashed out on designing the outside of the building) and it is a very very standard affair. Those who were expecting a fancy lar-dee-dar humble abode will have by now been given a rude awakening but its about to get a whole lot worse. The bedrooms themselves could very easily be compared...
