Das Boot Torpedoes U-571 Again

Advantages: The best submarine drama to date
Disadvantages: Very long

...It was only after watching my newly acquired copy of U-571 the other day that prompted me to dust-off my DVD of Das Boot (Director’s Cut) and give it another look. In the past, this movie has been seen in several formats. Serialised on BBC2 and in standard movie length being two of them. The DVD version runs for 200 minutes – and that’s just the movie! I suspect that this is closer in length to the TV mini-series in content than the normal movie. The advantage of the DVD format, is that you can hear the soundtrack dubbed into English, or for the purist, in German with or without English* subtitles, which is, of course, much closer to the original. Tip – If you speak any German, see if you can spot the points where the somewhat primmer English subtitles deviate from the more lavatorial German dialogue...

Putting Das Boot in

Advantages: Best submarine film I've seen
Disadvantages: German language (subtitles)

...What can I say about this classic Wolfgang Petersen film? Well, I have to admit that knowing a smattering of German does help: it is subtitled, but you miss out on a lot by following that, since not every word is included. But don't let that put you off, this is *the* submarine film of all time. Forget 'U-571', forget 'Red October' or any of the others, Petersen's film gives the other side's view of WW2. Yes, all the creaking, the diving beyond maximum depth is there, but so is some superb characterization, some excellent (and genuine tension) and (how rare in a war film?) some humanity - when they are unable to pick up survivors from a sunken ship, for example. 'Das Boot' is available on video, but comes around every now again serialised on the BBC. See it....

DAS BOOT NEEDS THE BOOT

Disadvantages: LONG, SLOW, BORING - NEED I GO ON

...After watching U-571 for the first time (which I didn’t really like) – my step-dad brought his copy of Das Boot – the directors cut on DVD. He then preceded to tell me about the various versions of Das Boot there are, (surprisingly there are quite a few), yet this is one of the great versions as it is in it’s entirety and lasts for around three and a half hours. The film is situated on a U-97 and the crew that man it. There is nothing else you can say about the story-line really. There are depth charges surrounding them, they do their best to maneuver around them, with a do they survive or not element (I don’t want to spoil it but there is a small twist at the ending (nothing great but un-suspecting). Angelcare Monitor

Advantages: Peace of mind.
Disadvantages: Remember to turn off when lifting baby out of cot

...I knew from the outset that i would be one of those paranoid mum's constantly worrying about my baby & wondering if he was still breathing through the night, so I invested in the Angelcare monitor with movement sensor mat. The set includes a 'baby unit', 'parent unit' & movement sensor mat. The mat is placed under baby's mattress (if like mine, the base of the cot is slatted, or you're using it in such a moses basket, then you will need to place the mat on a firm surface such as a piece of plywood under the mattress), & is so sensitive that it can detect even the lightest of breathing. The mat connects to the baby unit which then transmits to the parent unit. If no movement (yes, even light breathing counts as movement) is detected for 20 seconds, an alarm sounds on both the baby & parent units, enabling time to get to your baby...

Good cheap baby monitors (Tomy Walkabout Classic Advance Monitor)

Advantages: 100% portable, mains or battery powered, good solid units
Disadvantages: Can eat through batteries

...Recently the video baby monitors that I had been given (second hand) gave up the ghost so I had to purchase a new set. I decided that I didn't need a video one again or one with any other fancy gimmick on it (one that plays a melody etc), I wanted a nice basic and reasonable cheap monitor just so I could hear when she wakes up in a morning etc. After looking online at the hundreds of monitors available (most of which are very expensive) I found the Tomy Walkabout Classic Advance and after reading a couple of reviews I decided that this one should do the job just fine. Whats in the Box? A Quality Monitor

Advantages: Many functions, clear sound, no interference, talk back
Disadvantages: Temp sensor maybe a bit sensitive

...We recently borrowed this monitor from a friend - it's on our wish list but we can't really afford to buy one, so we are trialling this one at the moment. Due to us borrowing it, we were never given an instruction manual, but have still managed to figure out most of the functions with success! ...This product was a definite good purchase! I was quite overwhelmed with how much choice there was in the market as to which baby monitor to buy and I settled on this one as it sounded ideal. The product is a senor pad which detects tiny movements and will alarm after 20 seconds if there has been no movement so, for example, if your baby stopped breathing an alarm would go off after 20 seconds alerting you to this. The sensory pad is a flat square which you place underneath the cot mattress so it isn't bulky or uncomfortable for the baby to lie on. The pad is attached to the monitor which is really easy to use. ...Baby Walkabout Advance from Tomy Living in a flat I felt I did not really need the most high tech and expensive of monitors and just needed one that really did the job. I was looking at all the ones available to buy on Amazon and this one sprang out at me. It was not the cheapest monitor going but it certainly was not the most expensive either. Monitors range from about £15 up to an astonishing £100 plus. The latest ones out on the market offer a television screen where you are actually able to see your baby as well as hear their sounds and monitor room temperature. I feel however the television screen is a little bit much and think I would find myself glued to the screen while all the time away from the baby. This particular baby monitor set me back only £29. I think this is a fair price for what you are getting...
