David Cook
Advantages: Current American Idol winner, a musician
Disadvantages: None
...This...... is the current American Idol Winner.
David Cook is the American Idol that nearly never was. He actually was not initially going to try out for the television talent show, he was at the auditions to support his brother but, after some pushing from his brother, decided to audition too. A good decision, because he became the winner of the seventh season of American Idol in 2008.
David Cook is classified as a Rock, singer-songwriter. His sound is definitely very rocky, but in my opinion quite soft rock. He has a very deep, raspy voice that lends itself very well to this type of music. What I really like about him is that he can actually play an instrument, unlike a lot of the new pop stars out there today who are just manufactured. He plays the guitar and actually used it quite a lot when he was performing on Idol. If you look...

David Lean does it again, with a little help from Dickens!!
Advantages: A wonderfully atmospheric film
Disadvantages: None
..."You have to savour Dickens, you have to enjoy him. You can't just skip through in shorthand......you have to have very strong photography, black shadows and brilliant highlights." David Lean
OLIVER TWIST
I can hear your groans from here, ?Oh no, she?s reviewing another oldie!!? and yes I am, and I don?t care!!!!!
You?ve all heard it said that the oldies are the best!!
This review is of David Lean?s 1948 adaption of ?Oliver Twist?, the restored DVD released in 2008. (ASIN: B001AJ34C6)
I am sure that when most people think of Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist" on film, their thoughts automatically go to the 1968 musical ?Oliver!
While I agree that it was a great film, if you are looking for a film however, that is a more serious and truthful, by far the best film adaption of ?Oliver Twist? is David Lean?s classic 1948...

FREE DVDs
Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review
...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them.
∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊
Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

A VERTIGO VIEW OF THE LEANING TOWER
Advantages: Gives you something to do in Pisa
Disadvantages: No safety fence.
...We were having a lovely few days in Pisa, the tilting to the Leaning Tower had been arrested, it is even said it is now being reversed, but for obvious tourist reasons I do not envisage that it will be bought back to a level state.
History says it was begun in 1173 and that it has always tilted, subsidence disrupted the foundations so that when they had only errected 3 of the 8 storeys they knew they had a problem, so for the next 180 years a succession of Architects were employed to try and correct the fault.
By 1350 it was accepted that the angle would be accepted and the tower was completed, I imagine some far sighted business man had clocked onto its potential.
The tower was eventually closed to the Public in the 1990's with an overhang of 5 meters off the true.
Much work has been done in reversing the lean and it is open...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54
Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.
...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied.
On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Lean System 7
Advantages: Not sure there are any
Disadvantages: price
...Probably like you, I spent ages trawling through sites trying to find research or evidence about whether or not Lean System 7 actually works. At best I found reviews that were telling me they were getting great results and it was money well spent and so on. However there were a few scare stories out there about people having headaches and stomach aches. This I put down to intolerances to high doses of caffeine, since one of the active ingredients in Lean System 7 is caffeine. Since I drink a lot of tea coffee and energy drinks I presumed that I wouldn?t have to the same fate as these poor individuals. So I bit the bullet and shelled out money for a bottle of 120 tablets. I started taking the recommend half dosage for the first week then upped this to two twice a day, first thing in the morning and after lunch. I did in fact loose weigh...

David Tua, Hard hitting
Advantages: Hits hard, brilliant chin
Disadvantages: Pretty unskilled
...David Tua, arguably one of the best current boxers never to have held a "proper" world title (WBC/WBA/IBF/WBO) and most certainly one of the most entertaining of the current crop of heavyweights (not saying
much I admit).
-*-Early days-*-
Born Mafaufau Tavita Lio Mafaufau Sanerivi Talimatasi (according to wikipedia anyway) the man we know as David Tua was born in Samoa to a man and a woman (who'se names I do not know). At an early age he moved to New Zealand and thats where he picked up boxing.
-*-Amateur days-*-
As an amateur Tua quickly rose through the national ranks becoming a champion in 1988 (at a juniour level I think) in the heavyweight category. 4 Years later he proved he was pretty good as a "man" (as opposed to a huge 15 year old "boy") winning a bronze medal in the 1992 Olympics fighting at the -91 KG category...

The MacLean Western
Advantages: A good read in the standard MacLean style
Disadvantages: Slightly disappointing ending
...Alistair MacLean makes his only passage into this 1974 western writing, but before I start for those MacLean fans out there do not worry it is far from a typical western. There are the expected Indians, army, lawmen and villains, but there is none of the gunfights that saturate the normal run of the mill westerns.
Breakheart Pass has all of the elements of the classic MacLean action novels, a strong individual hero, a minor female role, tension and a story that leaves the reader wondering what the role is of each protagonist.
I wouldn't say it is predictable but there are enough hints throughout the novel that if it were a crime novel you could probably work out who had done it. The first time I read this book I was worried that it would turn out to be a repitition of Fear is the Key but in a different setting, but this worry was...

MacLean Flying high
Advantages: A true tale of tension and suspense
Disadvantages: None
...One of the all-time classic action thrillers, from one of the best writers in the genre. I am an avid fan of Alistair MacLean as an authour and I am also a big fan of the Burton and Eastwood film. The book is though superior in a number of areas to the film, providing as it does greater detail and slightly differing action at key points of the story.
MacLean returns to one of his most detailed areas to write about, with the book set in the Second World War. This theme can be seen in some of his best works - Guns of Navarone, Force Ten from Navarone, Partisans and San Andreas.
The book starts inside a Lancaster bomber and you are quickly introduced to the main characters in the story - Smith, the leader of the expedition; fellow British soldiers Carraciola, Christainsen, Thomas, Terrance-Smythe and Harrod; as well as token American...

Another Great Singer from American Idol (David Cook - David Cook)
Advantages: Great album from start to finish most of which David had a hand in writing
Disadvantages: None
...I am a very big fan of the reality TV shows, X Factor, Britain's Got Talent and most of all American Idol, I think these show are a great way of giving people the chance to make it. I think American Idol seems to produce some incredible talent, it seems each year they have that one person who you know is going to make it big, for example Kelly Clarkson (who I am a massive fan of) and now David Cook (winner of season seven in 2008).
From the very first show I loved the sound of David Cooks voice, it just had a completely different sound from the other contestants and he made every song his own, he didn't seem bothered about how big a song was, he would change it to suit him, sometimes it didn't work but most the time it did and it was amazing.
After he won the show I thought that I would get his album as soon as it was released but then...
