Morrissey

Advantages: Good songs
Disadvantages: None

...I really like the album. According to the Guardian: " Visconti treats him as a handsome Latino melodramatist suffering from a kitsch surfeit of imagination as much as a damp, exiled Mancunian miserabilist with a cold tendency to nostalgic self-obsession. Ultimately, Visconti helps transform Morrissey's dogged oddness and phenomenal fussiness into pure magic. Love him or hate him, there's no one better at loving and hating." Complete Song List: 1. I Will See You In Far Off Places 2. Dear God, Please Help Me 3. You Have Killed Me 4. The Youngest Was The Most Loved 5. In The Future When All's Well 6. The Father Who Must Be Killed 7. Life Is A Pigsty 8. I'll Never Be Anybody's Hero Now 9. On The Streets I Ran 10. To Me You Are A Work Of Art 11. I Just Want To See The Boy Happy 12. At Last I Am Born Lyrics are...

Review of Ringleader Of The Tormentors - Morrissey

this is how Morrissey grew up!

Advantages: best of the new stuff + old classics
Disadvantages: a fair few fillers

...For the few people who have read some of my reviews I think its more than apparent that I am a massive fan of Morrissey, in my opinion, probably the greatest to ever pen such classic, personal lyrics. Only last week I witnessed him live for about the 6th time in a couple of years. Yet rather than go all over the top and give him five stars just for being amazing to me I am gonna hold back and give what my head, not my heart tells me. Opening with 'First of the Gang to Die' , arguably his best song in recent times is a Morrissey classic that deserved to reach the summit of the now crowded with pure toss pop charts (James Blunt etc) as opposed to another customary top ten hit for Moz. This greatest hits failings are evident with the next two songs 'in the future when alls well' and 'i just want to see the boy happy', which are solid...

Review of Greatest Hits - Morrissey

Morrissey: The Jewel In His Crown

Advantages: Morrissey's Crowning Achievement
Disadvantages: None

...a supporting role. The song is particularly catchy and is arguably one of the highlights of the album. The songs ends rather outlandishly with yet another sample, this time from David Lean's film "Oliver Twist" in which the Artful Dodger pleads with Fagin "Don't leave us in the dark!" The album swiftly progresses onto the auto-biographical "Hold On To Your Friends" in which Morrissey beautifully tells the story of a person who only calls him when he is feeling depressed and in need of support, however, when the person is feeling happy, he has little time for the big M. The song itself returns to the more slow-tempoed approach found on the first two tracks of the album. The combination of Morrissey's voice and the accompanying delicate guitar playing, creates a perfect angelic harmony. The fourth track of the album bares witness to its first...

Review of Vauxhall And I - Morrissey

David Cook

Advantages: Current American Idol winner, a musician
Disadvantages: None

...This...... is the current American Idol Winner. David Cook is the American Idol that nearly never was. He actually was not initially going to try out for the television talent show, he was at the auditions to support his brother but, after some pushing from his brother, decided to audition too. A good decision, because he became the winner of the seventh season of American Idol in 2008. David Cook is classified as a Rock, singer-songwriter. His sound is definitely very rocky, but in my opinion quite soft rock. He has a very deep, raspy voice that lends itself very well to this type of music. What I really like about him is that he can actually play an instrument, unlike a lot of the new pop stars out there today who are just manufactured. He plays the guitar and actually used it quite a lot when he was performing on Idol. If you look...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Morrissey - You Are The Quarry reviewed

Advantages: You won't find lyrics like this anywhere else
Disadvantages: The quality is weighed far too heavy onto the lyrics and not the music for many songs

...He's back! And he's good! Whilst there seems to be a hyperbolic cheer at Morrissey coming back despite the fact his solo albums were not recieved, it is great to see him with singles that are good. I'm sure many do not remember the song Dagenham Dave do they? It wasn't good in any way, the only reason I remember it is because my brothers pointed out the fact that I was born in Dagenham and my middle name is David! Whilst Morrissey has a fantastic voice and puts great music with it (be it with Johnny Marr in the Smiths or as a solo artist, occasionally), many, including my girlfriend, cannot see the appeal of a man who seems unable to come to terms with the world. What they fail to appreciate is that, whilst his views appear often contradictory, he is, as Orwell puts it, 'in a minority of one, but that doesn't make him wrong...

Review of You Are The Quarry - Morrissey

Morrissey: The Definitive DVD

Advantages: Morrissey on top form. Fantastic extras.
Disadvantages: Questionable sound mix

...It was during the summer of 2004, that the Stretford-born Steven Patrick Morrissey had made his long awaited 'come-back'. After many years of semi-reclusion in Los Angeles, Morrissey and his band had completed work on their seventh studio album, entitled "You Are The Quarry". The album received critical acclaim across the board and demonstrated if anything, that Morrissey was back. Recorded on Morrissey's 45th birthday and in his home town of Manchester, Morrissey gave one of the strongest performances of his career. The zealous audience was not only treated to the highlights of his latest album, but also to those of his extensive back-catalogue including many hits from his Smiths days. The set-list began with the recent chart-topper "First Of The Gang To Die" and progressed onto other highlights including; the thunderous...

Review of Morrissey - Who Put The 'M' In Manchester (DVD)

Review from a new Morrissey fan!

Advantages: Catchy, beautiful music, lovely vocals, insightful lyrics.
Disadvantages: Maybe too political/controversial for some. Many, many editions.

...are very catchy, and will grow on you if not on the first listen, then certainly after two or three. I find Morrissey's vocals to be very smooth and brooding, very pleasant on the ear. For comparison, I would say this CD has a similar feel to David Bowie's newest CD, "Reality." Morrissey's lyrics are a double edged sword, however. He doesn't hesitate to express his political leanings and his thoughts about the church in a very blunt, straightforward fashion. While I personally find his lyrics wonderfully sharp and intense, I can understand why people would be turned off. For instance, the first song is called "America Is Not The World," in which he sings, "America, your head's too big because, America, your belly's too big," and later, "America, the land of the free, they said, and of opportunity in a just and truthful way. But where...

Review of You Are The Quarry - Morrissey

David Tua, Hard hitting

Advantages: Hits hard, brilliant chin
Disadvantages: Pretty unskilled

...David Tua, arguably one of the best current boxers never to have held a "proper" world title (WBC/WBA/IBF/WBO) and most certainly one of the most entertaining of the current crop of heavyweights (not saying much I admit). -*-Early days-*- Born Mafaufau Tavita Lio Mafaufau Sanerivi Talimatasi (according to wikipedia anyway) the man we know as David Tua was born in Samoa to a man and a woman (who'se names I do not know). At an early age he moved to New Zealand and thats where he picked up boxing. -*-Amateur days-*- As an amateur Tua quickly rose through the national ranks becoming a champion in 1988 (at a juniour level I think) in the heavyweight category. 4 Years later he proved he was pretty good as a "man" (as opposed to a huge 15 year old "boy") winning a bronze medal in the 1992 Olympics fighting at the -91 KG category...
