(Any football story which features It ain't Half Hot Mum's Don Estelle leading the crowd through 'God Save The Queen' and the Chuckle Brothers as the VIPs meeting the teams before an England-Germany World Cup Qualifier is looking for laughs. And because 'Atkinson for England' is so absurd, daft and puerile, it gets them - in droves. Plumber Reg Atkinson, bidding for the Wembley undersoil heating contract, is installed instead as the England team manager after a cock-up at FA HQ (A 'Big Ron' of the same surname was supposed to get the job). Reg's only experience is managing a Nottingham pub team. How will he fare, when all the country's professionals have gone on strike with only days to go before the biggest game in years? Will the Forest Inn players come to the nation's rescue? And will the Chuckle Brothers behave themselves in the Royal Box?)

Reading has always been home to a plethora of pubs, inns, beerhouses and breweries. This selection of archive and new photographs relates the history of Reading's many pubs, from the days when they were filled with factory workers and bar billiards enthusiasts to the pool tables and cigarette machines of today's theme bars and chain 'mega pubs'.

The idea that ale and beer are good, honest, nourishing and make men strong has been deeply ingrained in the English psyche for 2,000 years. This is the story of English drink and the places where it was consumed during those 2,000 years. The history of the alehouse and the pub was never an easy one. At one time or another the Church, war, Puritans, temperance crusaders and the taxman have tried to curb the boisterous habits of the English. All to no avail. Tracing the Englishman's drinking habitat through all its manifestations from rude hovel to alehouse, tavern, inn and beershop to pub, this book examines the various phases in its history, the golden days of the coaching inns to the darkest days of the gin fever.

Sensitive and book-loving Laura is born in the rural hamlet of Lark Rise, where life has followed an unchanging pattern for centuries and the days are governed by the rhythms of nature. This is the unforgettable story of her beloved home: a place where children know the name of every bird, flower and tree; men work the fields; women gossip over the fence; and the last relics of country customs have yet to die out. Whether it is describing ancient traditions such as the Mayday garland procession, bringing the harvest home and singing ballads in the local inn, or introducing characters such as Laura's radical father, the pioneering Mrs Spicer, the eccentric bee-keeping Queenie and ladies who wear bustles to feed the pigs, this first part of Flora Thompson's autobiographical "Lark Rise to Candleford" trilogy captures a vanished corner of rural England and the timeless joys of childhood.

Glastonbury, 1583: Late one night, two men arrive at a local tavern, arousing the curiosity of the inn-keeper's twin children. Are the men as wealthy as they seem? And what is hidden in the chest they bring back to the inn a few days later? For better or worse, Catherine and Henry make it their business to find out. London, 2012: Tom and his mum are supposed to be on holiday, Christmas shopping and seeing the sights, but instead they are imprisoned in a grotty flat with a man Tom hates. Just as Tom begins to fear that they will be there forever, help arrives in the form of a mysterious stranger... Glastonbury, 2012: When an ancient book from the ruined abbey is found in a skip, a visiting American film star turns detective, uncovering new connections between Glastonbury, the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail. With a cast of alchemists and gypsies, masons and mystics, the Rising of the Sun travels through over four hundred years of history as its characters search for happiness and meaning in the game of life...with the occasional help of a rather unusual cat.

Holderness, 1846. For reliable, thirteen-year-old Bella, life isn't turning out quite as she'd hoped. She lives at the Woodman Inn - an ancient hostelry run by her family in the Yorkshire countryside - surrounded by two older brothers who never pull their weight and a flighty younger sister. When Bella learns not only that her father is seriously ill, but that her mother is expecting a fifth child, her dreams of leaving home to become a schoolteacher are quickly dashed. Times are hard, and when their father dies Bella also has to take on the role of mother to her baby brother. Her days are brightened by the occasional visit from Jamie Lucan - the eighteen-year-old son of a wealthy landowner in a neighbouring coastal village. Also grieving the loss of a parent, Jamie has more in common with Bella than she thinks. When her mother announces out of the blue that she wants to move the family to Hull, Bella is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. They arrive to find that the public house they are now committed to buying is run-down and dilapidated. Could things get any worse? Or could this move turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Bella?

Vicky Tiel started as an "it" girl of the 1960s and has had a four decade career designing clothes that make real women look fabulous. Her sexy, fresh hot pants and miniskirts were used by Woody Allen in his first movie, What's New, Pussycat?, her classic design inspired the red dress that transformed Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, and her creations are worn today by stars such as Halle Berry and Kim Kardashian. Tiel's own life has been dance-the-night-away fun, from her earliest days flunking out of Parsons to design on her own, to starting a chic boutique with best friend Mia Fonssagrives in Paris, from marrying MGM's top make-up man to becoming Elizabeth Taylor's dear friend and part of her longtime entourage. Tiel forged her own path, and picked up some distinctive and hard-earned lessons from the rich, famous and celebrated along the way. In IT'S ALL ABOUT THE DRESS, you'll get a glimpse of what it's like to be Hollywood royalty (think yachts, tiny dogs, giant pearls and peanut butter sandwiches washed down with Chateau Margaux), discover the seduction secrets of the greats (from Kim Novak to Goldie Hawn to Warren Beatty), take in a little husband-hunting advice, and even learn legendary model Dorian Leigh's recipe for gigot d'agneau sept heures. Vicky Tiel will teach you to dress like a sex symbol , cook like the owner of a French country inn, and seize what you want from the world like an American ingénue.

On Dartmoor's northern edge, the landscape is dominated by Cosdon Hill. Here the first inhabitants made their mark upon the rock several thousand years before warning fires burned on its summit and people populated the valleys below. When the Dumnonii took to farming, and tree worship gave way to a new religion, the tides of change were already leaving a rich tapestry of history marked on the land for those to come. Wealthy conquerors divided the countryside while their tenants ploughed and worked it and the wandering pedlars and packmen carried their wares through the winding trackways of the parish. In this unique volume readers can share in a century of little-known photographs, and discover, though ancient stories and records, the inheritance that awaits those keen to explore these historic lands below the beacon. South Tawton and South Zeal with Sticklepath traces the history of the villages from Saxon times, but essentially celebrates the last century of daily life in the community. Included are over 200 photographs and a lively text portraying every aspect of local life, from farming, houses, chapels and church, to local industry, schools, inns and days of celebration and leisure. Wherever possible, names have been put to faces down through the generations making the book a valuable heirloom for anyone living in the parish or for those who have family associations.
