Advantages: cheap, great quality , nightvision , lightweight
Disadvantages: no firewire or usb included , but you can buy these cheap

Sony Handycam DCR HC1000E

Advantages: Excellent Image with 3CCD, Lightweight and Easy to Use
Disadvantages: Now obsolete due to High-Def 3CCD Camcorders

...with them. The DCR H1000E is no exception and used a superb lens which gives superb clarity to the images. And being able to focus manually is a great addition to this camera. Sometimes you really need that manual control for fast focussing (which autofocus cameras are not particularly good at) and also to add effects, because the point of focus may not be in the main part of the frame. The Zebra pattern is only of interest to quite serious photographers, and for those reading this it operates just as most others do and there is nothing exceptional about it. For those that want to know what it is I suggest looking for a reputable website or a good book, because its importance and use are beyond the scope of a review. The spot meter and spot focus are rather more for the serious types, but in a nutshell it gives you a much great control...

Brilliant

Advantages: Great camera, great zoom, many features, and good to use
Disadvantages: No USB cable, Nightshot is not great, USB SLOT where the LCD panel goes. Touchscreen mishap a bit

...of the switch to open or close the lens, really convent. The zoom is 40X optical zoom, and 2000 digital zoom. Then we move on to the LCD monitor, which has a record button, and W/T zoom control, really easy to use. Everything is touch screen which is good as there is less buttons. Where the LCD panel is, you have another speaker, reset button. Easy Mode, Display/Batt Into and your backlight. Unlike some camcorder, which have a flap/trap door to show USB, Firewire, AV, but on the the DCR-HC37E, the USB slot is where the LCD panel is,. Not good if you want to protect the panel from dust. Then on the back you have another record button. Also on the back, the supplied battery NP-FH30which is good, but you need to carry a spare as the supplied battery doesn't last the whole tape(that's if the lcd panel is open) There's a colour viewfinder which is good...

Disadvantages: No firewire cable supplied, camera shake at extreme zoom

...PC is NOT included, which is my main complaint about the unit. You will need to add some editing software (or use windows movie maker/apple equivalent) to make some home movies then upload to the internet or record onto DVD. e) It has a Nightvision mode and touchscreen LCD display to access the camera menu functions....

The built in microphone is the only draw back I have found with the camera so far. It is situated right on the front and has no protection from the wind and there for your movie can sometimes be effected by wind noise even if the wind isn't all that bad...

Camcorder that thinks it's a stills camera

Advantages: Excellent video and stills quality
Disadvantages: no longer manufactured - still a few around though

...In it's day, the DCR-HC94E represented the higher-end of Sony's domestic camcorder range. From the photograph It looks almost exactly the same as any other 'bog-standard' 8mm camcorder, but that's exactly where you're wrong - it uses a mini-DV tape and is almost a third of the size of it's elder cousins! Where the DCR-HC94 is set apart from other camcorders is in the resolution of still photographs - combined with the excellent Carl Zeiss lens, the 3 megapixel CCD sensor gave pretty respectable results, even by 'proper' camera standards of the day. Of course a few years on, and three megapixels doesn't sound that great, but in reality the combination of a decent lens and lower resolution sensor beats high resolution sensors and crappy lenses anyday! The optical zoom range is 10x which may sound rather lacklustre by current standards...

Handys in the Name.

...OVERVIEW I bought my Sony DCR-HC27E a few months ago from Curry's for about £200 (but I see Amazon.co.uk are currently selling for £179.99), I also picked up a case for it for about £15 - not essential but I have found it extremely useful. The first thing that attracted to me was it's size - it's quite small and easy to carry. It also had a nice touch screen which I think is a pretty cool feature - again in no way was this essential, but nice touches like this really add to the cameras feel. The Sony brand name also in a small part attracted me as I didn't know much about camcorders and wanted a name I could trust and rely on. It also has a Carl Zeiss Lens that I have been hearing so much about. When I got the camera home the first thing I realised was it's ease of use - I expected to be sitting around for awhile with the instruction...
