- Unique all in one cut & rake action - For close to the ground removal of saplings & large weeds - Weed cutting on gravel paths - Easy clearance of overgrown areas - Part of a unique and exclusive collection from De Wit. - Cut and clear away nettles and brambles etc. in one stroke with this clever clog free cutting rake. - Great in overgrown gardens and allotments. Used for removal of weeds in gravel driveways. Pond clearance. Lawn scarifying. The Sprake makes easy work of weeding as it has specially engineered narrow blades between the tines. We believe that the Spork is destined to become one of the must-have garden tools and will become an essential part of every gardener's tool collection. In October 2008 it was voted 'Testers' favourite' by 'Which' Gardening' magazine. In the 'Which' Gardening' trial the Spork was pitched against 9 other border tools by a team of professional gardeners. The trial was conducted over 4 weeks and all tools were assessed for a range of tasks: loosening and turning soil, clearing weeds and planting perennials and shrubs. Seven of the eight Which' testers would happily buy a Spork and 3 would even swap their conventional spade for one. The serrated cutting edge was sharp and easily cut through soil and small roots. The Spork is good for digging, planting and turf edging. ''It's an ideal compromise between a spade and a fork -I would definitely buy one' said one tester. "It's great for clay/loam soils, good for digging and turning over soil, and for breaking up compacted ground," said another ... less

One of those tools that any serious gardener will find that they would be lost without. It is brilliant for planting lots of perennials. Usually the choice is between a border spade and a hand trowel. The one is too heavy and clumsy, the other too insubstantial and gives you a sore wrist. The handspade is used with two hands which is ideal when you are on your hands and knees: power is directed effortlessly and the small head means that you can work in tight corners. The Dutch are rightly regarded as makers of the finest gardening tools. De Wit have been around longer than anyone. They started in 1898 and the 4th generation of De Wits are now in charge of the business; one is a trained wood turner, the other trained as a blacksmith. De Wit forge their tools from carbon steel in the traditional way. Carbon Steel is naturally tougher than stainless steel and is not prone to metal fatigue. De Wit also burnish their steel. This not only helps to protect it for longer but gives it a patin ... less

This not only helps to protect it for longer but gives it a patina that blackens it - just like traditional English tools from the Edwardian era.All De Wit tools have turned hardwood handles of oiled Ash. Ash is not only very strong but resists shock better than woods like oak or beech, which is why it was traditionally used for Axe handles. The result is a beautiful tool to hold in the hand but ru ... less

Puerto Colombia-beach time, Venezuelan style
Advantages: Relaxing, beautiful
Disadvantages: Not much to do except relax!
...Unlike many places in the world now, the most spectacular part of a trip to the small Venezuelan village of Puerto Colombia is still the journey to reach it. This collection of posadas and the adjoining colonial village of Choroni are situated a mere 2 hour drive from Maracay on the west Caribbean coast of Venezuela yet they seem like they are a truly rural slice of life. The main reason for this...

A Hidden Gem In The Heart Of Colombia
Advantages: diverse, stunning, peaceful, cheap, friendly, coffee, climate
Disadvantages: language barriers, long bus journeys
..., where my travels continued down the West coast to Santiago de Chile. I appreciate that I am just one traveller amongst many, but having travelled from one end of the country to the other entirely by public transport with out any problems whatsoever, I feel compelled to let others know that Colombia should not be ignored out of blind fear of the unknown.
I should add here that coming back to the UK...
