A portable super computer
Review of Apple PowerBook G4 - PPC G4 867 MHz - 15.2" TFT by iMacfan

Advantages: The first portable super computer
Disadvantages: no more expansion bays

...Now - you must be wondering why you should buy a laptop for more than 2000 pounds with a chip speed of 667Mhz. Well - the answer is in the "G4" bit of the name. The Motorola G4 processor is the first processor to achieve preformance of more than 1 gigaflop sustained (1 billion floating point operations per second) - so it is technically a supercomputer. There are two flavours - 550Mhz and 667Mhz. Apart from the usual increase in RAM and HD, the 667 has a 133Mhz main bus as compared to 100 on the low end. As for shared specs, they really are quite juicy, sporting radeon graphics, DVD/CDRW slot-loading combo drives and a wonderful 15" widescreen display that is wonderful for DVD movies. It also has a good array of ports, with modem, 10/100/1000 (yes - gigabit) ethernet, USB 1.1, Firewire, IRda, s-video out, VGA out (with support... Read review

pentium d 935. extreamly good and very cheap
Review of Intel Pentium D 935 / 3.2 GHz processor by kirkyjj

Advantages: very fast, capable processor, very cheap
Disadvantages: faster fan needed for overclocking

...This is an extremely capable mid range processor. If you are looking to upgrade your computer to a very good standard without having to pay hundreds of pounds then this is the processor for you. I have had this processor for just over a week now and it has proved to be very good. The 3.20 GHz clock speed is extremely fast and is capable of running most applications to a very good speed. Also the fact that it is dual core has really impressed me. All this for such a cheap price. There is a 2x2mb cache on this which is very good, you would get better with the £300+ processors but for this price it is very good. I have this set up with an as rock motherboard and 1 GB of ddr2 667 MHz memory. This runs very well and is very smooth for intensive applications such as video editing. This processor is a socket 775 one which you need... Read review

Celeron 600e = 9.0x Multiplier
Review of Intel Celeron 1 GHz processor by wildandyc

Advantages: Very Overclockable
Disadvantages: Small cahce

...A 9.0x multiplier is about as far as you can go with a Celeron to acheive the much respected 100Mhz FSB and therefore acheive 900Mhz in the case of the Celeron 2 600e. DO NOT BUY A CELERON 2 633, 667 OR 700 IF YOU WANT TO OVERCLOCK THEM 100MHZ FSB. Their multipliers are too high unless you are going to liquid cool them!!! It has to be said that the 0.18 micron die etch has been a god send for overclocking but when the multiplier starts to get silly, atainable overclocking on a locked bus is crazy, hence my suggested max of a Celeron 600e if you're thinking of clocking your new Celeron.... OKay, but expensive and outclassed by Athlon
Review of Intel Pentium III 1.13 GHz processor by nosferatu1001

Advantages: reasonable speed
Disadvantages: outclassed by cheaper athlon

...Intel amazes me - years after everyone ridiculed the name "pentium" they are still at it with their latest revision, the PIII. Like all intel chips, it is completely compatible with all existin dos, win, linux etc, so all your old programs will still run. HOWEVER, this is likely to be the last chip that is this completely backwards compatible. THe next chip will have a 64bit layout, and it is likely that 32-bit [ie pentium] will only be emulated - which means slowdown. However, back to the chip. All PIII have either a 100mhz bus or a 133mhz bus. Those which have the ending xxxE [ie 667E] have a 133mhz bus. As the clock multiplier is fixed, putting a 667E [ie 133mhz*5] chip into a system which only has a 100mhz bus will only give you a 500mhz [100mhz*5] system - you have been warned! There is also another ending - B... Read review

Super for a styleish pc
Review of Shuttle XPC SS31T - no CPU by stiffy249

Advantages: Cool Air Flow, Compact and High Performance
Disadvantages: Maybe abit tight when fitting the hard disk but is still easy to install

...Very good product I brought one of these for my own pc at home and i was well impressed with it. Its small compact and very stylish Considering the size of the case there is very good air flow and the processor was always cool. There is a fan at the top part of the case in the cdrom section. Motherboard has two Dimm slots for memory and will take two 1GB Sticks are 667Mhz Enough space to put two hard drives but you will have to drop a floppy drive feature if you want more than one HDD I paid £99 for this at ebuyer and found it was more expensive at other places. All the screw and cd drives come with it and i really enjoyed building this machine I had a AMD 5000 Dual Core Processor in this Reliable and never crashed. All in all a super product.... Alpha equals A for quality
Review of Arcam Alpha 8R by iangrant

Advantages: Quality 'Arcam' sound - full, powerful. Remote control, phono stage, twin speaker outputs, gold-plated connections.
Disadvantages: Soon to be discontinued model, remote only controls volume, perhaps lacking detail compared to 'high end' amps

...the gain to a fixed level for the AV/DVD input (if you use it in a 5.1 configuration with an external processor; which I don't, so not terribly important to me) and a line/phono switchable input that uses a moving magnet phono stage. I've never used another phono stage, so I can't compare but my vinyl sounds alive through this amp! The Alpha range is slowly being phased out by Arcam (the 8s just having stopped production at time of writing (Dec 2000), being replaced by the DiVA range. However, if you can get an Alpha 8R at a good price, then it is defintely worth it - that famed warm Arcam sound with a feeling of prominent power is well worth the price, I feel.... Read review

Toshiba gaming laptop P100-286,
Review of Toshiba Satellite P100-286 - Core 2 Duo T7200 2 GHz - 17" TFT by leontata

Advantages: powerful, Vista Home Premium
Disadvantages: 4200 rpm harddrive, unidentify Geforce 7900 card, 533 bus Ram

...It is obvious that this is the most powerful gaming laptop of Toshiba UK. Toshiba Satellite P100-286 is the replacement of its first gen : P100-347. Both have configuration, P100-286 doesn't have any improvement in hardware. However, updated with a new BIOS and new OS : Windows Vista Home Premium. The OS seems to work fine, sometimes there're still several bugs but they can easily fixed by updating on Microsoft website regularly. Being on the top of the line of Toshiba Gaming laptop, P100-286 comes with a very powerful laptop processor T7200 at 2.0 Ghz, 4Mb L2 Cache and Front Side Bus 667 Mhz. A massive Ram PC of 2Gb will support the processor even better if Bus speed is increased to 667 Mhz to fit with the FSB of T7200. Replacing that pair of Ram with 2x 1Gb PC 5300 would be a good idea. Capacity 200 Gb, certification : S... Read review

fast & cheap
Review of Intel Celeron D 356 / 3.33 GHz processor by duck1979

Advantages: Fast for a base model processor
Disadvantages: The fan supplied is an absolute #@$*% to fit in place

...Back in Summer 2006, upon reclaiming back £196 of the £258 NatWest screwed me out of during 2005, I realised it was probably about time to start thinking about a new computer, since the one I was using at the time (1.1GHz AMD Duron jobbie I'd had since Sept. 2002) was starting to be older than the length of time I'd used the PC I had before that one (1999 - 2002 previous one, 2002 - 2006 for it's successor, Dec 2006 to present for the one this processor I'm reviewing wound up in). My first PC was a 75Mhz Pentium1 jobbie rebuilt by some kid, which I bought after seeing an advert in the Whitby Gazette. My next PC was a bare bones system I bought off some Brummie trading on eBay as "Ginger6". This time, I decided to have a crack at knocking one together myself in bits, seeing as I have jacksh*t else to do all day with no job to go to (and... Read review

Intel, making the bucks, the sneaky way
Review of Intel Pentium 4 2 GHz processor by zero

Advantages: They are very powewrful processors
Disadvantages: Too expensive

...I'm not if AMD have done this but Intel definitely have. When they introduced the PIII 450 MHz for the first time, they did not mention to the public that it was only 10% faster than it's little brother the Pentium II 450MHz processor. When the gigahertz processor was introduced, it was tested by a popular computer magazine. I found the results to be surprising. In some areas of performance the Gigahertz processor was SLOWER than the 850 MHz processor. When ever a new processor is introduced it is always overpriced. This overpricing is not little it is ridicously high. A month or two after the release the prices drop massively. Then soon after a new processor is introduced, faster and more powerful. When this show will end who knows. These very powerful processors don't even operate to maximum performance because of the operating... Read review
