With the slinky white leotards, the pastel set and the references to toning and firming, yoga purists might be quick to dismiss Barbara Curries Seven Secrets of Yoga as yoga for middle England. Yet Barbara Currie is the Delia Smith of the yoga world--its not just that what she does works, but she knows exactly how to make it work for the rest of us. Though the title implies that this is a session divided into seven segments, there are in fact more than seven parts: a choice of two 10-minute miracles (beginners and advanced) recommended to start the day, followed by a series of six short sequences designed to work either as a sequence a day, or together in an entire, comprehensive session. Curries precise instruction covers balancing the body and mind, working the lower back and toning bottom and thighs, toning the tummy and waist, working the arms and neckline, stretching the entire body and relaxing. Though the focus appears to be toning up, the real surprise is at the end when Currie cleverly reveals the seven secrets: yoga is good for shape, weight, energy, relaxation, concentration, flexibility and youth. This is a succinct and inspiring explanation of the philosophy of yoga.--Lorna V

The contemporary vogue for detoxing has its origins in practices thousands of years old, which more authentically include daily enemas. Fortunately Suzanne Cox (aka Gladiator Vogue) shows us a less intimidating way to give our bodies a service with her simple at-home two-day Detox Plan. With a carrot, rather than a stick, Cox gently but firmly leads you through detox preparation (hide all the caffeine, dairy, sugar, processed foods, cigarettes and alcohol) and into the detox itself. She takes her time to show you how to prepare the food and drinks you'll be consuming, as well as how to kick-start the lymphatic system with gentle stretches, followed by a warm bath/cold shower combination. If the domestic setting, slow pace and occasionally amateurish camera work make this feel more like a home video than a glossy high-production-value number, then at least you'll feel like detoxing is something you can realistically achieve at home. Cox also punctuates her soothing Delia Smith-like presentation with guest appearances from a nutritionist, naturopath, herbalist and yoga specialist to enrich the programme with advice, exercises and tips. One major omission does sully this new-you scenario. Rather than showing you how to ease your way out of the detox, the video ends at the completion of the second day. To the inexperienced, this might indicate that it's fine to crack open the booze and fry a T-bone on the third day. Despite how much care has been taken up to that point, the video ends up feeling hastily curtailed. On the whole, however, this is a very accessible, user-friendly, show-and-tell plan for those who want to relieve themselves of their toxic baggage. --Fiona Buckland

...DELIA SMITH'S COMPLETE COOKERY COURSE
The book that I am reviewing is more than 15 years old and is the illustrated complete hardback version. I have seen paperback versions in the shops and also ones that are a smaller size than my copy. However, I believe the content is mostly the same.

This is a complete illustrated cookery course and my copy contains 576...
Advantages: Some great, no-fail recipes Disadvantages: Not enough photographs
...I make no bones about the fact that I'm nothing more than an average cook at best and so when preparing meals, I need all the help I can get . Delia Smith may be less than fashionable these days in terms of celebrity chefdom (if there is such a word) but over the years I've found that her recipes never fail.
Delia Smith left school at 16 without a single 'O' level (not even Domestic Science...
Advantages: Delicious recipes, not overly expensive, widely available still Disadvantages: n/a
...I?ve always been a huge fan of baking, cooking and trying out new recipes. My favourite type of cookery probably has to be baking, and I love making all sorts of desserts and treats to feed my family, from things such as apple pie and rhubarb crumble, to chocolate muffins, sponge cake and chocolate mousse!
Delia Smith was born in 1941, on the 18th of June. Delia is a household name. She has...
