Dell Axim x51v
Advantages: compact, intuitive
Disadvantages: low battery life
...I purchased this PDA because at the time i did not have a laptop and i wanted something for browsing whilst not at a PC.
My first impressions of this product were that it is really user friendly. within minutes i had registered it to myself and was browsing the internet wirelessly (via my own wireless router).
Look and feel: i think this is a quite good looking product, it fits nicely in your hand and the pen that comes with it is surprisingly sturdy and doesnt get sticky if you have it in your hand for a while.
Memory: the base memory ont he PDA is of an ok size, enough to store documents and photos; but i would reccomend upgrading the memory on it, which is really easy to do and quite cheap.
Ease of use: i think its quite intuitive. navigation is smooth and stable and the screen on mine has survived a couple of droppings...

My Palm Tungsten E was beginning to show its age after a couple of years and I started looking at a replacement. I am not confident about the future for Palm units so thought I'd look at Pocket PC models. After initially looking at HP iPaq models I felt that the Dell range offered better value for money. My criteria included straightforward compatibility with MS Outlook and other...

PC, MP3 & Video Player, Games & more in one
Advantages: Large Screen, Fast Processor, easy to use interface and more !
Disadvantages: Battery life not as advertised but still beefy enough
...Dell Axim X51v 624mhz
The Dell X51v comes in different forms, this review is based on the X51v model with the 624mhz processor, I have had my PDA now for little over a month, its primary use is as a GPS Satellite Navigation device when it is coupled with my GPS device by Bluetooth. My original idea was to buy a Sat Nav system, however after looking at the ever falling prices and raising specifications of PDA's I decided to go down this route. Whilst more expensive, the PDA provides lots more abilities than just buying a Sat Nav device. For those who are unsure of what a PDA is, PDA stands for Personal Digital Assistant and is basically a palmheld watered down PC. Ive added the full specifications to the bottom of my review to compliment the details given by Ciao and to give a greater understanding of what is available
PDA's have so...

My first PDA
Advantages: Unlimited storage with removable SD memory cards. Small and powerful
Disadvantages: Manual not very informative. Small (64MB) Onboard memory
...After reviewing about 20 different models I finally settled on a Dell because of the brand name and other user reviews. Choosing the 520Mhz was quite easy because of the promotional price they were offering at the time, it was the same price as the 420Mhz model.
Before I get to the actuall PDA a word of advice, don't order telephonically as it is very easy for the consultant on the other end to get the wrong information. Do it online so that they have everything in Black and White. My PDA was sent to the wrong address 3 times before I eventually went to collect it from UPS myself. This also resulted in me having a replacement PDA sent to me as the first one went missing. However both the original PDA and the replacement were sent to the wrong address. After receiving both PDA's I contacted Dell and was advised that I could keep both...

Very powerful Pocket PC
Advantages: Looks great, big bright screen, WiFi connectivity
Disadvantages: Expensive accessories, needs ROM upgrade for CF cards
...I bought the Dell Axim X51v 624Mhz to replace my ageing Palm Tungsten. Its the first time I've used Pocket PC and it makes things a lot easier when synching with my desktop PC. The screen is big and bright, with a good resolution. The built-in speaker is adequate for the job and through earphones the sound quality is very good. I use it with a bluetooth keyboard, which was a bit fiddly to set up at first but works very well. I have no problem connecting to my home wireless network via the built-in WiFi. Bluetooth connections are fast and reliable. The included software is adequate for the job and there is a huge amount of freeware and shareware software on the internet which can be downloaded. Unfortunately the pre-installed calculator is very basic, unlike the fantastic calculator that comes with the Palm OS. But the rest...

Dell Axim X50v PDA of Power
Advantages: Screen, graphics, wireless range
Disadvantages: Battery life, viewing angles
...processor at the moment, so it can handle media files and other processor intension tasks with ease.
Installed ROM: 128MB. This is where the PDA's operating system and application software is built into. You see Pocket Word and other pocket programs that loads up with Pocket Windows? It's all here, so even when you fully reset the PDA and get rid of all data, the operating system etc will still be here and safe.
Installed RAM: 64MB. This memory is shared by the PDA from personal storage to required memory to run programs. It doesn't look like much, but PDA programs are usually very small in size i.e. 40KB, so the RAM is plenty enough.
Graphics: Intel 2700G graphics processor with 16MB video RAM. This is one of the main selling points of the Dell x50v. It has a standalone graphics chip with its own memory to render 2D and 3D graphics...

Good All Round Pocket Performer
Advantages: Build Quality; Speed, Battery Life
Disadvantages: Cost of Additions, Accessories, Charging from USB
...I purchased the Dell Axim primarily to use on the factory floor for access to EMails, Statistical Data from Excel, and the usual Calendar and Contact applications. It does all I expected of it without fuss. It is very quick loading programs and files, the Windows interface is relatively easy to use, although getting my head around the various internet and wireless settings took some time - however that is a feature of the operating system, not the PDA.
I like the fact that it is quick and easy to switch from portrait to landscape modes ( good for Excel docs )
There are 4 button controls on the front, and two on the side which can be configured to suit, but the standard setup works fine for me ( calendar, contacts, Email, Internet)
I have big stumpy fingers and very soft nails so I don't tend to use the navigation tool much...

Cheap, cheerful and it shows!
Advantages: Cheapish
Disadvantages: Dreadful battery life,
...An interesting product. I had an O2 XDA PDA/phone before this and decided to take the plunge. The device is poorly built. If you are considering one adn like good engineering, please go to Comet or Currys and have a feel of a Dell. Their desktop PCs are the same - cheap, poorly designed housings with painted plastic chrome that wears quickly and bits that break easily.
The unit itself is better although the buttons are unreliable, especially the contacts button which has to be pushed and held hard in order to work. The unit has also started to play up recently and freeze. After many attempts to get rhough the waiting for Customer Services, I can confirm that they really are as bad as they were a year ago, despite making claims they are resolving the issues. They are taking the unit back for evaluation, although they can't say how long...

Excellent PDA wth great all round performance
Advantages: Size, Performance
Disadvantages: Cost
...I have had my PDA for around 4 months now, it performs very well, and battery life is very good.
It has a robust build (although I wouldn't recommend bouncing it on floors), it is very well constructed, and all parts of the casing fit well together. The stylus is held very well and is unlikely to get lost. The buttons fall easily to hand and are comfortable when in use. The screen is excellent with very high resolution and great picture and colour quality.
On the downside there seems to be a limited number of genuine 'Dell' accessories - a car cradle would be a good one, although it is supported well by third party suppliers. The connection lead for battery charging sticks out a long way and seems rather flimsy, but hasn't caused me any problems. On rare occasions it 'locks-up' and needs to be reset (this doesn't loose all user...

Inspiring Inspiron from Dell
Advantages: Good spec, reasonable price, great processor
Disadvantages: The piano black surface attracts dust and dirt.
...I purchased the Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop back in January for my daughter's birthday. I had a limited budget but wanted to get her something with decent enough spec for playing computer games should she wish to do this, and a large hard drive as she is a big fan of making videos on her digital camera and downloading music - two things which can eat up hard drive space.
I did a fair bit of research before purchasing and decided I wanted to get the best spec I possibly could for my money and the Inspiron ticked all the boxes. I paid £399 in January 2009 in Currys for the laptop which was the absolute limit on my budget.
The Dell I purchased has a dark blue coloured lid, however the rest of it is a shiny piano black which looks lovely. I would have preferred metal for the mousepad area - it feels sturdier and doesn't seem to attract...
