...As a self-endowed treat during my studies towards my degree, I went on a tour of Classical Greece accompanied by my ever patient husband. The highlight of tour proved to be Delphi. The approach to the city was breathtaking in itself as the coach wound itself down the pine tree lined roads of the holy mountain, Parnassus. From the road, many of the ancient sites are visible. We strained our necks to catch whatever glimpses we could but we had to be patient for a closer inspection. The sites were closed for the day and we would have to wait for the morning to gain entrance. The city of Delphi lies approximately 3k away. We settled into our Hotel, The Casti. Hotel Amalia Delphi - Ok for a night

Advantages: Good location which is next to Delphi town
Disadvantages: Mostly for bus tours

...I stayed here for a night while I was travelling on the Kalambaka-Delphi-Olympia route. I have also stayed in Hotel Amalia Kalambaka and Hotel Amalia Olympia. Hotel Amalia Delphi belongs to the Amalia Group of hotels in Greece and their main target is bus tour groups. Places like Kalambaka, Delphi and Olympia do not have convenient public transport serving them thus tourists most likely have to join bus tours. Delphi is a small town which can be easily covered by foot. The historical site of Delphi is also easily accessible from Hotel Amalia Delphi. The hotel is rated as 4-star but mostly likely because of the swimming pool. Bus tours stay here as the small towns do not have other hotels which have over 100 rooms. Hotel Amalia Delphi is situated on a slope and overlooks the Corinthian Gulf. The nicest view from the hotel...

Delphi 4 - Ideal for all Developers

Advantages: Very cheap, Powerful, RAD compatible
Disadvantages: Can't distribute applications, No Help file compiler

...I have just finsihed writing a fairly major program, as part of my third year Computer Science degree course. It consisted of a total of 6000 lines of code, which for a program written by one individual is a fair amount. I undertook this development in the Delphi 4 programming environment. The choice of this was for two reasons. The first, and most important, was the applicability of the language to the program that I was writing. Secondly, it's free! OK, technically it is not free. Delphi 4 is now available as a 'Trial' version, which I aquired on the cover of a PC Pro magazine, back in Novemeber last year (Nov2000). The license does have several restrictions on it, such as the applications being produced must only be used personally, and not distributed comercially. Fair enough, after all it is free. ...Delphi Forums supplies you with a treasure of information. More sorums than I can count, it touches on every subject. From soapmaking to taxes, from coupon collecting to law. If you have a question, go to a busy forum and ASK. people are willing, able and eager to help you. There are also sites where it's just friendship... Internet cyber pubs with an irish feel, people coming together at a forum on their favourite music or TV show (Yes, in a few forums people even speak Klingon.). It's all there. Eventhough Delphi has it's problems, mainly due to it's popularity and the consequential high traffic, the forums are diverse and convenient, easy to find and a great place to make new friends. Delphi 3 or Visual Basic

Advantages: Free if you can find it. More powerful than VB.
Disadvantages: Slightly harder to learn than VB, but not much.

...Why bother with Delphi? Why not go straight to Visual Basic? Well, for a start VB will cost you money, even the standard edition, whereas if you look around you can find Delphi 3 on certain cover disks. My copy, from PC PLUS March 2000, is the professional edition with all the extra web tools. VB's easier to program isn't it? This is a falacy. VB is based on the BASIC language and Delphi is based on Pascal. BASIC is slightly easier to understand but if you can master BASIC then Pascal will be a walk in the park. Pascal can do everything that BASIC can do and more. Creating Forms is just as easy in Delphi as it is in VB. The compiled code runs faster than the VB equivalent and the error detection is first rate, which is more than I can say for VB. If you seriously want to try a language then get hold of Delphi and have a go. If...

...I first bought Delphi 3 after I had been using Delphi 1 off a cover disc magazine. I found Delphi 1 so easy to start using that I bought Delphi 3 because I wanted the updated features for Win95 and upwards. In my opinion Delphi 3 is excellent for a beginner programmer because you can get your first program up and going in seconds but is also good for the more experienced programmer giving more power to the programmer than visual basic. One thing I was wary of when I changed from Delphi 1 was the fact that Delphi 3 is automatically configured to build with run time packages, so when distributing my first program I realised that half the files to make it run were not present (annoying to say the least. But I still maintain that Delphi 3 is an excellent choice for new and old programmers....

OLD GODS ARE STILL ALIVE IN THE NAVEL OF THE WORLD

Advantages: Rich, varied site with variety of ruins, an excellent museum and outstanding views
Disadvantages: Crowded, abundance of tour groups especially in the lower levels of the main site and the museum

...Our visit to the Delphi site takes up good part of a Sunday, and we are many times lucky there. Firstly, the entrance is free on the day as it’s (unbeknown to us previously) an Environment Day. Secondly, and with more luck then design, we manage to stage our visit so that we avoid most of the tour groups as we visit the museum in the lunch hour and the sanctuary - normally the busiest part of the site – towards the closing time. The tour groups here are overwhelming. Apart from numerous Greek schoolchildren which somehow don’t bother me because after all who has not been on a school trip, though mine were to rather less exciting locations, there is a lot of American ones, conforming to all the worst stereotypes of colourful, noisy philistinism, but most touring nations are represented (strangely though, no sign...
