MOOSES GUIDE TO DENMARK
Advantages: Not as expensive as expected, friendly people, easy to get around, great beer!
Disadvantages: More expensive than the UK, gets ignored when thinking about a short break
...In another of my travel guides I had to write an opinion about this wonderful (but small!) country. I would never have even considered taking a trip to Denmark had it not been for a conference I was required to attend for work. I had heard it was expensive and the weather was very similar to that of the UK...so really no great appeal to a twenty something female - how wrong was I! This opinion is not meant to be a complete run down of Denmark, more of an account of the areas that I visited in the week I was there.
Denmark - General
-----------------
Believe it or not, Denmark is made up of 450 islands, most quite tiny and uninhabited. It is divided up into 3 regions; Sjaelland, Fyn and the peninsula of Jylland. The two cities I stayed in; Aalborg and Aarhus were situated to the west of Jylland so this is where I will...

Delicious Denmark - more than Pastry and Bacon.
Advantages: Different, Delicious.
Disadvantages: Not spicy.
...Food in Denmark.
Not the first place you would associate with a burgeoning food culture I know, but there are a number of dishes in Denmark that you just wont find in England. Denmark is culturally very similar to England, and neighbours with Germany and Sweden, and all these influences are apparent on the dining table. More background info is available here:
http://www.answers.com/topic/cuisine-of-denmark
The danes generally take a continental style breakfast, and then a light lunch, with the main meal of the day in the early evening. Working through these in reverse order, Here is an idea of what to expect:
Evening meals.
Generally, there is a tendency towards a "meat and two veg" approach to dining, and most meals would receive the approval of your granny.
Potatoes are a staple, and are served boiled, roasted or "brown...

England 3 Denmark 0 A Game of One Half
Advantages: Through to Quarter Finals
Disadvantages: probably against Brazil
...**Ciao don't seem to have added categories for second round matches yet, so I've posted my report of England versus Denmark here**
The heroics against Argentina (and rather dull draw with Nigeria) had led England into a second round match against Denmark, the side who beat defending champions France. We’d already equalled the progress of 1998 and were hopeful of going (at least) one stage further. This was never going to be an easy match though – Denmark not only winning their group, but boasting two impressive wingers, Rommedahl and Gronkjaer, who would test our full backs’ defensive abilities, and the free-scoring Jon Dahl Tomasson.
As expected, the England team was unchanged – having come about due in part to injuries to Hargreaves and Dyer, it now picks itself really and Eriksson stuck with a winning...

Car Hire and cycling in Denmark
Advantages: Clear, well maintained roads
Disadvantages: dangerous unless you read this, expensive
...If you hire a car in Denmark, you should be aware of a couple of things. Although i have hired only once (my employer paid), I didn't get told about either of them.
Firstly, the cost. Denmark must be one of the worlds most expensive places to drive. The government slap a HUGE tax (c.100 percent) on the value of all new or imported cars, and this has now filtered down to all vehicles in Denmark. I recently purchased a 20-year old VW Polo and it cost me over 1000 GBP!!! Hire cars are not exempted, and the 1day, 1way car hire from Copenhagen airport to denmark cost my company around 300 GBP. Admitedly it wasn't the cheapest class of car, but even so...
Petrol costs are also high, but only on a par with england. If you can though, fill up on a sunday (preferably at one of the self-serve stations) as prices will be c.10%lower...

There is more to Denmark than Copenhagen
Advantages: lovely countryside, nice people
Disadvantages: quite expensive
...Yes, yes, everyone knows Copenhagen and the Little Memaid or the Tivoli.
But how many of you know about the rest of this wonderful country?
To understand my fascination, you must know one thing:
Unlike like most people at ciao.uk, I do not live on an island surrounded by the sea. No, I, as a boring German, live in the boring German countryside where the nearest bit of sea still is a good 8 hours' drive away. *sniff*
And so, as I love those high, rough waves beating upon a sandy beach, the wind blowing so hard that it's difficult to breathe, the smell of burning wood wafting across the heather, so I spend most of my holidays in Denmark, preferably somewhere on the North-Sea coast.
In my opinion, there is nothing better than a small holiday house a stone's throw away from gigantic sand-dunes. Go for a walk, get soaked...

Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen
Advantages: Lots to do, easy to navigate, friendly people
Disadvantages: Very Expensive
... COPENHAGEN
My family and I had a lovely midweek winter break in Copenhagen, although there were a couple of hiccups (none the fault of Copenhagen itself) that I will come to later.
Copenhagen is both the largest city and capital of Denmark, a small country of 5.2 million people.Greater Copenhagen has a population of about 1.5 million people. The city is located on the island of Sealand (Zeeland) just across the Oresund Straight from Malmo, Sweden. A new bridge/tunnel was = completed in July 2000 linking those two countries.
It is the largest city in Scandinavia and is also the seat of Denmark's 179 member parliament (the Folketing).
Before I went to Copenhagen all I really knew about it was through the fairy stories of Hans Christian Anderson, I was very much looking forward to finding out much more.
We booked our...

Copenhagen
Advantages: Relaxed and lovely
Disadvantages: Expensive and not a huge amount to do
...Gardens and the Little Mermaid is as far as it goes really but I always thought it looked a nice place and as we hadn't been to Scandinavia before it seemed a good opportunity.
Denmark is one of those annoying countries that have not moved to the Euro (we know who we are) so you will not be able to use up that little stash you've got tucked away in your sock drawer. The national currency is Danish Kroner (DK) and as a rough guide currently runs at 10DK to the pound, keep this in mind as most prices I quote will be in DK. Having said that, there are some places that will take Euros but you won't get away without plenty of local currency.
Warning #1 ~ The inconvenient truth
Copenhagen is hideously expensive. As someone who has lived and worked for many, many years in the City and West End areas of London you'd think I'd be used to inflated...

Aarhus.
Advantages: relaxed, clean, friendly, scandinavian, shopping
Disadvantages: cold, expensive
...I am english but have moved to Aarhus, where the following info is based on my own observations and people who have come to visit either myself or my expat friends.
Aarhus is located on mainland Denmark (Jutland) just under the bit that looks like a nose (yes, denmark looks a bit like a face). Aarhus has an international airport in the same way that Bristol does - it isnt big or clever, and it's located a long way from town. There is, however, a transfer bus that takes you from the airport to the railway station downtown. The bus leaves about 15 minutes after the arrival of all flights, and will usually wait if the flight is delayed. It costs abot 80kr from memory. If you want to organise transport either to or from Copenhagen when you are here, the rail service is dsb (dsb.dk, I think) It costs around 1000kr for a return, but you do...

New Year in Copenhagen.
Advantages: Not too many tourists.
Disadvantages: Everything is expensive, very cold in the winter months.
...Last New Year my partner and I fancied getting away and decided to book ourselves a last minute short City break over the New Year period. As we booked last minute there wasn't an excess of choice and that is how we ended up choosing Copenhagen as our eventual destination.
FIRST A BIT OF BACKGROUND.
***********************************
Copenhagen began as a small fishing village and rose to become the Capital City of Denmark, in Northern Europe. It is the largest City in Scandinavia with a population of about 1.7 million and is situated on the island of Zealand. The main language spoken is Danish although most of the Danes speak English. We didn't find communication much of an issue anywhere.
THE CITY.
***********
Copenhagen is a relaxed city, full of exceptional architecture and with a generally friendly atmosphere...

If you like boot sales read on .......
Advantages: Gigantic Indoor Market
Disadvantages: It's only on twice a year
...Just updated the dates for any who are interested
For those of you who find that their Danish is a little rusty - you may wonder what a Stumpemarked is. Stumpe basically means bits and pieces and for those of you who are English, it's a bit like a car boot sale, but a lot, lot bigger, and it's inside.
The Stumpemarked is held in Herning - a town which is in the middle of Jutland (the bit of Denmark which is attached to Germany). On the outskirts of town, on the A12, is a place called the Messecenter, which is a very large exhibition centre which consists of a number of halls. The Stumpemarked usually takes up to 9 of these halls, the largest of these halls can probably fit a couple of football pitches quite easily.
So what can you buy? The market is split into two sections - to the right as you go in are the 6 halls devoted...
