The Mackworth Hotel, Derbyshire
Advantages: Great location, warm and friendly
Disadvantages: May be out of budget, hotel rooms not suitable for disabled guests
...The Mackworth hotel is a converted and extended farmhouse situated on the edge of the medieval village of Mackworth, Derbyshire. It lies just 2 miles out of Derby City Centre with close links to the M1/M6/A38/A50.
We chose this as our wedding venue in the October of 2006, after visiting the Hotel for several meals and evenings out previously.
As well as being fully licensed for civil wedding ceremonies, the hotel boasts extensive conferencing facilities, restaurant and bar areas.
The restaurant boasts a superb carvery with a varied choice of meat and veg for a reasonable price as well as many alternatives on the menu. The hotel is surrounded by picturesque Derbyshire Countryside visible from the restaurant open plan extension.
The hotel itself has welcoming decor styled on rustic farmhouse with the main entrance to the side...

Poole's Cavern, Buxton, Derbyshire
Advantages: Lots of history, Educational
Disadvantages: Damp and dark, Expensive
...Poole's Cavern is situated just under a mile outside of the Derbyshire town of Buxton, on the fringe of the Peak District National Park. During a recent visit to the town I actually stumbled upon this place quite by accident, and since the weather was abysmal for trudging around I decided to pay this place a visit.
It is well sign-posted from the town centre so we decided to follow the brown tourist signs that led us out of the town centre, past the School and through a rather desirable residential District of this picturesque town.
I would describe Poole's Cavern as one of those little Gems of a place I occasionally find when I wander off the beaten track. The only difference here is that this place is no hidden secret, yet despite my many visits to Buxton this is the first time that I was aware that the place existed...

Whittlebury Hall Hotel and Spa
Advantages: Pleasant staff, facilities, closeness to Silverstone
Disadvantages: Remoteness
...bar tab they had!
Apparently the hotel is the place to stay for the racing drivers when it's race weekend at Silverstone, so if you're a Formula 1 fan then the bar is a great place to hang out if you want to meet a racing star. The bar is decorated with pictures of the some of the many racing stars who have stayed at the hotel, which gives the bar a distinctive atmosphere. The prices in the bar are extortionate though - you're looking at £5 per drink.
There are all the usual facilities at the hotel that you would expect, and others that you wouldn't - golf course, spa, gym,19m swimming pool, aerobic and dance studio, sauna, steam room, tanning rooms. I don't usually have time to use many of the facilities at the hotel when I stay there but I've never heard anyone complain about any of them. The hotel can also arrange other...

Harbouring a hotel........ Poole
Advantages: Excellent Views, Good value for money (when we stayed n e way)
Disadvantages: The heat, rooms very warm
...We recently stayed at the Thistle Hotel in Poole and have to say that of the many hotels we have stayed this must rank amongst the top 5. Based right on the harbour, and I mean right on it, about 20 feet, the view of the boats coming / going, the yachts and the general ambience of the place was excellent. Our room on the second floor was spacious with a separate seating area and very clean. The bed was good to firm and storage was exceptional, good storage was needed as the wife insisted on taking 16, yes sixteen different tops for a two night stay. The bathroom was light and airy and the room in generally had all the things you expect, i.e. Trouser Press, Shower, Bath, Iron, Hair Drier etc etc..
Of all the good things there are, as always, a couple of drawbacks. Firstly was the heat, it was just so warm in the hotel in...

A decent hotel choice for downtown Vancouver
Advantages: Great location, good facilities, great deal
Disadvantages: You'll be lucky to get the same deal
...was a nice discovery upon check in. We didn't always experience nice surprises on checking into hotels that holiday, but that will be dealt with in another review!
Checking out was just as simple; since we didn't incur any additional charges, we were on our way pretty quickly after a cursory check of our bill.
THE RECEPTION AREA
As we entered the hotel we were immediately greeted with an immaculate, roomy, sparkling reception area. The square, sparkly chandeliers imposed over the high ceilinged area. The shiny cream floor tiles gleamed, with some black tiles showing the way to the bar area. There was also a doorway to the right of the reception desk leading to the hotel spa. There were some green leather benches around the pillars to provide some seating, backed by some brown leather on the pillars, as well as a small tabled...

experience at this hotel
Advantages: views, service, staff
Disadvantages: room , old , needs updating
...i stayed at this hotel over the winter period of 2008 , and i just found this place to be the worst hotel i hadf ever stayed in , dont get me wrong the staff were great but the standard of my room was horrible , out of date tatty and the restraunt wasnt so up to date either , service was great , the views were amazing and the locals were very fiendly, the hotel is based next to the quay side in poole over looking the second biggest natural harbour in the world , with the national park (brownsea island ) in view it is a place you need to see , overall i did enjoy my stay here even though there was no heating in my room and i was brought an elecric heater as a replacement i payed £89 for a single room , i would like to say this is a great place for familys that like a quite restfull holiday with a peaceful atmosphere, thistle hotel...

Poole, it's a beautiful place
Advantages: Beautiful, lots to see and do
Disadvantages: ????
...which sells some beautiful items too.
Hotel Du Vin has recently opened in Poole, just 30 seconds walk from the Quay. The Hotel Du Vin building is beautiful and is renowned for its fantastic food.
In my opinion, the best restaurant on the Quay is The Customs House. Have the steak wth peppercorn sauce! Cutting into the steak is like cutting into air! Pricey at around £30 for two courses but well worth it!
Poole Quay has lots of lovely restaurants and pubs. There is one "club", Dundees, which is an Australian bar which generally plays pop music. They also have quiz nights, karaoke and cheap drinks. Although Dundees is far form the classiest of establishments, I do end up there every now and again because it's open late and i enjoy the cheesey music :-)
One of my favourite attractions in Poole is Compton Acres.

Buxton great, Portland Hotel not great
Advantages: Close to the Pavillion Gardens
Disadvantages: Below par food, below par rooms.
...disappointment.
The coffee was fine; the tea, when it came, was ordinary tea, not the Earl Grey which we'd asked for (and which we knew they could do, as we'd had it at breakfast).
Usual price is £75.00 for a double room, £55.00 for a single room with breakfast.
It's a bit of a rip-off, overall, I'd say.
The town can get very busy in the Summer, and especially in July (Buxton festival), but even if all the other hotels are full - don't stay at the Portland if you can avoid it, and definitely don't eat there.

*~*~Spa*~*~
We were booked into the hotel for the 1 night min spa break which cost £99.00 per person based on 2 people sharing and your chosen treatment was at an additional charge.
As we were unable to check- in to our hotel earlier we were advised that we could make full use of the spa from our arrival at 10.30am which was an advantage.
I had booked in for the Full Body Massage at 11am so we dropped...
