...Brief description of area?.. Ladybower reservoir? Shaped in a Y configuration this is the lowest of the three dams. The river Alsop runs into it from the west, The river Derwent from the south. It was the biggest reservoir of its time with its widest part being approximately 3 miles wide. Two villages were flooded to make this vast expanse of water, the village of Ashopton and Derwent. The buildings being demolished in Ashopton but not in Derwent, leaving the church spire visible in very dry seasons. (although I do believe the spire has now been dismantled for safety reasons, as people were trying to swim out to it and putting themselves in danger). Ladybower began it life in 1935 and took eight years to construct and nearly two years to actually fill, building work slowed down in 1939 when WWII broke out. When completed it...

...I am very fortunate that I live only a short distance from the Peak District National Park which offers some of the finest scenery in England. The Derwent Valley lies in the Hope Valley within the Peak District and connects three large man made Reservoirs called Howden Dam. Derwent Reservoir, and Ladybower. I have visited this area many times and I am always spellbound by its sheer natural beauty, but beneath these dark waters lies a sordid tale of destroyed Villages and an Environmental disaster. GETTING THERE Ladybower, the largest of the three bodies of Water lies at the bottom end of the Derwent Valley and directly beside the A57 Road which connects Sheffield to Manchester. The best colouring pencils I've ever used

Advantages: Lots of different colours, soft, proffessional, well presented in a tin

...Derwent Artists Colour Pencils I chose to do art at GCSE and although sometimes I think I should have chosen something which involves more writing and working instead of drawing, I do really enjoy this subject and overall am really glad I chose it. I know that if I had chosen not to do it, my school life would be a lot more boring and I would definitely regret my decision. It stands proudly and in all its glory, surveying the land around it, like a sentinel guarding the people of Northern Lakes. This makes it different from the Lakes? other Three Thousanders (mountains over three thousand feet in height, of which there are four), that it is so easily seen. The other three are not as well spotted as Skiddaw. Scafell Pike and Scafell are shy, rarely seen from the areas nearby and it is by heading their way on foot that their features comes into view. An Area To Be Proud Of ...Ladybower, Hope valley.

There are a total of three dams which help to form three reservoirs, the dams are The Derwent, The Howden and Ladybower. In 1899 the Derwent Valley Water Board ( The areas water supply is now looked after by the Severn Trent Water Board) was formed in order to create a water supply to Leicester, Derby, Sheffield and Nottingham. Two huge Gothic style dams were erected and spanned the River Derwent which in turn created two reservoirs, The Howden Reservoir in 1912 and The Derwent Reservoir in 1916. Of course they had to draught in hundreds of `navvies` ( the workers who constructed the Dams ) to work on the project, all of whom had to have accommodation for themselves and their families. Ladybower Reservoir in the Dark Peak

Advantages: Tranquil, picturesque
Disadvantages: Can get very populat at times

...Ladybower reservoir is situated in the Upper Derwent Valley in an area of Peak District National Park known as the Dark Peak. This area is characterised by its high mountains and steep gritstone edges. I am fortunate enough to live less than a 20 minute drive from here, yet this has never been a place that I have taken for granted. This is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful places in England. The Ladybower reservoir lies at the heart of this area, occupying an area in the bottom of the lower derwert valley. In this difficult terrain there are few major roads around here, but the A57 (known locally as the Snake Pass), which is the main trans-Pennine route between Manchester and Sheffield cuts through this same valley and follows the shores of Ladybower reservoir for over 2 miles (3 Kilometres). Baslow - A Great Place To Visit!

Advantages: Lovely Picturesque Village In The Peak District
Disadvantages: Quite Small And Easy To Miss

...within an area of the Peak District National Park known as the Derwent Valley. This is characterised by its bleak moorland with lush green Valleys in between. The Chatsworth Estate is accessed either from an entrance just before you approach the Village or via a footpath from within the Village Centre. I would recommend the latter as this is a much quieter approach and takes you along the side of the River and past rows and rows of pretty Cottages. There are no signs to Chatsworth from here however, despite the entrance into the grounds only being about a third of a mile away. From opposite the Village Square look for the Public Footpath sign at the side of Gene's Sweet Shop. Close to here you will see the Old Bridge built in 1603. This was the Original Bridge that spanned the River Derwent and it looks very impressive with its arches made...

...Beneath the beautiful Skiddaw Mountains and the placid shores of Derwent Water nestles the picturesque town of Keswick. Indeed you look you cannot help but be impressed by the imposing majesty of the surrounding countryside which ever way you look. To get to Keswick by road perhaps the easiest way is via the M6 to junction 40 (Penrith) and then a short journey of perhaps 20 minutes down the A66. If you travel by rail then go to Penrith and from there a local bus into Keswick. On arrival at Keswick you will find that there are plenty of car parks which are well sign posted but beware the one at the local supermarket which imposes a charge of £5 if you stay for more than three hours, and as there is so much to see believe me you will. Walking through the town I found much to my surprise that I didn’t see any fast food...

Arkwright's Model Village.

Advantages: A busy village with lots to see and do.
Disadvantages: Not the prettiest village in Derbyshire.

This puts me in an excellent location - I am near to the countryside, pretty close to Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby and am also within public transport distance of some lovely villages. Another one of these villages is Cromford. ~~~WHERE IS CROMFORD? Cromford can be found in the East Midlands; it is in Derbyshire and is on the south edge of the Peak District. Located just off the A6/A5012 junction, not far from Matlock and Matlock Bath and around 17 miles from Derby, this decent sized village is deep in the heart of the Derwent Valley. I usually get there either on our CAMRA branch trips via minibus or get a bus to Matlock Bath, from Chesterfield town centre and walk to Cromford (about 20 minutes away).
