BACKGROUND: Whilst walking up Bridge Street on a weekend trip to Chester, my boyfriend Robert and I were trying to find the toy museum (we were following the pedestrian black signs but never found it), we saw an advertisement for the Deva Roman Experience, which had a cut-out of a roman soldier and some red leaflets on it. Curious, we stopped to pick one up and decided to visit this instead of the nonexistent toy museum. Come to Deva

Disadvantages: Congested with tourists in season

...Chester is an old Roman settlement (Deva) built on the River Dee. It has a wide appeal to tourists the world over and receives many million per year. Why do tourists flock to Chester in such large numbers then? As said Chester is a Roman settlement and evidence can still e seen of this today, yet there is also mock Tudor front buildings, and more modern buildings all in close proximity which gives Chester a unique look not seen in many cities throughout the nation. Chester is very good if you want variety of shops. There are all the usual national chain stores - Boots, BHS, Debenhams, Wollies, Virgin, HMV, McDonalds etc. Yet many smaller, more independent stores can be found - such as the F1 shop on Bridge Street Row, or 'The Gadget Shop' type stores, Bug and Natural World in the Grosvenor precinct. Chilly Chester city sightseeing

Advantages: good live guided talk
Disadvantages: can be chilly or bad in wet weather in open top bus

...you would need a taxi or bus to get into the town itself (although the sightseeing tour goes past it, and picks up opposite it near the Queens Hotel) ATTRACTIONS If you take the sightseeing bus round the town it takes an hour (and if you do, you will get money off certain other attractions' admission charges when you show your bus ticket). However, you can hop on and hop off as you want and the boat tour is an extra 1/2 hour but we did not do that part. The sightseeing bus does not go past the Deva Roman Experience museum (review to be submitted) as that is on a pedestrian's only zone but it is near stops 7, 11 and a short walking distance from 12, and you will get 50p of adult/senior citizens' prices if you show your bus ticket, which if we had known we would have used the bus first. At The Gates Of Midian

Advantages: Complex music, great riffs, great male and female vocals
Disadvantages: Swearing, 1 pointless track

A Masterpiece

Advantages: well acted, good story, catchy soundtrack, lots of detail, lovely setting
Disadvantages: slightly predictable

..., the rash woodcutter, everyone has their own characteristics. The 11 villagers picked for the cricket team in particular are very endearing. There are also so many little side stories going on in the back ground; Bagha the mute's affection for a girl; the feud between Bhura the chicken man and Goli the slingshot wielder; Deva the Sikh's experiences with the British army. I could go on and on. There are various obstacles that the team must overcome before they play the match, such as their own unpopularity with the rest of the province, and later on, where to get equipment. The match itself is simply full of suspense. The emotion displayed by the players and spectators alike is realistic and sincere. Advantages: wet weather attraction, cheap entry, open all year

...not detract from the interest of this museum 2. Disabled access may be a problem for wheel chair users - check before setting out. 3. Nearest parking is the Little Roodee car park some distance away - not suitable for disabled to walk to museum from. Although there is apparently a park and ride scheme with a bus stop on request nearby but it is not clear if this is available from the car park. AFTERWARDS We found that this was an interesting diversion but didnt take up all day so we needed to decide where else to go or whether to go back another time. In our case, we decided that we have "done" Chester! We had visited this museum, the Deva Roman Experience (see review), the Chester Visitor Centre and Amphitheatre excavations, and the Grosvenor Museum as well as gone on the City sightseeing tour (see my other Chester reviews...
