Amazing Micro Devices
Advantages: fast, cheap, not Intel
Disadvantages: none
...So there I was, considering an upgrade to my computer. Before started to purchase anything (as I was going to make it myself) I did a lot a research into what I wanted in my computer. There was one item for which I needed to do no research; this was the processor that I was going to put in this new computer. In my mind the only processor that was going to go into the new computer was a AMD Athlon, the only choice was what speed to I buy? The review will try, I hope, to be as jargonless as possible and if there is any I will try to explain (if I miss any explanations please inform me so I can update this).
** Why AMD **
Well the major difference between AMD and Intel is the pricing of their processors. A quick browse on the internet and you find that AMDs top of the range Athlon processor costs you £175 where as Intels top...

AMD Phenom x4 9500 reviewed
Advantages: Price, multitasking, AM2 and AM2+ compatibility, 65 nm energy save technology.
Disadvantages: When overclocked the temperatures are high but stable.
...AMD Phenom 9500 quad core processor reviewed.
I?m not the biggest PC hardware master, but I have some knowledge about it, and I need to say that this processor surprised me with it?s great power.
It uses socket AM2+, but I?ve heard it works on AM2 socket unfortunately on AM2 socket you can?t use it?s full potential due to changes in processor architecture. The 65 nm technology does not only save energy but as well it keeps the CPU cooler, it does not produce so much heat. The 4 cores make it a great choice for people who use many applications at the same time, like a busy office worker. The multitasking of this processor is at really high standards, I own this processor and at the same time, I surf the internet with many tabs opened, I have many documents opened, few applications and communicators and it still won?t get stuck even...

AMD Athlon XP 3000+
Advantages: Decent performance, cheap, you can tell you're mates "I got one too!"
Disadvantages: Not as fast as Pentium 4 rated at same speed, not future proof
...When I go to a few of my mate's home's, I sit down and have a few beers, play a few Playstation 2 games and have a kebab. But then I will always spy their PC sitting in the corner of the room hiding under a desk. I would ask them 'what processor you got in your rig?' and they would reply 'ah you know, AMD Athlon XP'.
AMD Athlon XP processors are cheap and fast. All my mates have them and that's because it runs the games, but doesn't take your bank into financial meltdown. Sure it's not the fastest processor in the world but for the asking price its amazing value for money.
You ever wondered why AMD added 'XP' to the end of their Athlon processors? I always thought it was because they wanted to boost sales using Windows XP, with them having the same suffix and all. But in fact it stands for Xtra Performance, unlike Window's XP which...

Slim Devices Squeezebox 3
Advantages: Excellent solution for listening to streamed audio from your pc or the internet
Disadvantages: Not cheap, Initial setup issues, other equipment required
...access any album or artist from the livingroom
Access to Internet radio - Aside from your own music stored on your pc, you can also go out on the internet and browse a wide range of radio websites, with thousands of tracks, albums, artists and genres available. Search to your hearts content for any music you want.
Excellent User forums - We had a few initial difficulties setting up the wireless connection between our ADSL router and the Squeezebox. However there are some excellent user forums on the Slim Devices website, with sections for people who have just purchased a device, and lots of people ready to offer help and advise in getting started.
Self updating Firmware - At the time of writing, the firmware for the Squeezebox is 'open source', meaning anyone can submit a firmware update to increase the device functionality. If you...

AMD 3800+
Advantages: Fast, affordable
Disadvantages: Not Multicore.
...Now, I'm not one who knows that much about CPU's before i begin but i can say a few good points about this.
The AMD 3800+ is the last of their single core cpu's that fit the 939 pin socket. In case you do not understand, when you get a computer, you have to buy a motherboard with a matching size socket for your CPU. This is 939 pin. The newer ones are AM2.
This cpu only has a single core but at least it is a nice quick one clocking in at 2.4GhZ. It can be over clocked but I do not do that nor do I recommend unless you have a fair bit of experience. I can honestly say it is fast enough to run ANY current game and I have an X850XTX graphics card which is about two years old now. So clearly its not outdated and if you are budget it does fine. HOWEVER!- If you have the money to spend, go for a newer AMD dual core cpu. The reason why...

AMD Xp2400+ ! !
Advantages: Relatively Cheap and PowerFUL! FOR applications and Games.
Disadvantages: can burn out really quick if your CPU fan plays up.
...AMD one of Intels biggest rivals have done it once again, toping the Cpu League Table by releasing the AMD 2400xp+ 266mhz FSB superb cpu will leave a mark for intel for several years.
The reason I believe everything above I have stated is true is because if you look at the specifications of the XP2400+ CPU its jaw dropping.
*It runs at a Clock Speed of 2GHz (2000MHZ) which is more than enough to run 99.9% of your games and applications (so for future purposes you wouldn't worry thinking if your computer could run your new software you were intending to buy).
*The Processor type is 'Socket A' AMD Socket A processors have been known to top CPU leagues because of their long lasting lifes and speed.
An advantage of having this socket A processor (the XP2400+) is that top motherboards such as the KT-400 support it. So having...

AMD turion tl-58:- a great prcessor all round
Advantages: speed, perormance, no dodgy intel media graphics
Disadvantages: none really
...I have a nice little Acer Aspire 5520G laptop with this processor, that I bought last December from Tesco Direct. One of my major worries when I bought the laptop was that it had an AMD processor as apposed to an intel processor. In the past I have used intel Pentium D, Intel Pentium Dual Core, Intel Celeron M, Intel Celeron D, Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Pentium 3 and well you get the idea, lots and lots of Intel processors. Having never used AMD before I sought advice from an IT expert at college and asked whether there were any major differences or problems with AMD. He told me that although AMD had had some bad press in the past they had been getting better and that he had a computer that used an AMD Duron that was fine. After this I opted to buy the computer regardless of the AMD processor, and I am very glad I did.
SPEED...

AMD K6 2
Advantages: Price, very cheap!
Disadvantages: None
...At some point last year, well more than a year ago, I decided that I needed to boost the speed of my computer a bit. I didn’t want to spend too much; I only really wanted to upgrade my processor. I had a look at what was on the market and I was quite restricted as the motherboard I had was quite old. It was a choice between an Intel chip, I am not sure what this was, and an AMD chip.
In the end what made up my mind was the price of the AMD K6-2 500 it was only £40. What a bargain, this could keep my computer going for another year or two, hopefully! I then had a few problems getting the chip as they didn’t make it any more, which means by now you can’t get it I should think.
** Installation **
It is not recommended that everyone change their CPU in their computer as they are sensitive pieces of equipment...

AMD IS GETTING BETTER
Advantages: LOW PRICE, GREAT GRAFICS,
Disadvantages: SLIGHTLY SLOWER THAN INTEL WHEN PROCESSING DECODING TASK
...Few days back I too was a blind fan of intel processors, but now with my new laptop I am just in love with AMD processor, sorry rather AMD turion 64 x2 mobile processor. My new laptops is from HP compaq presario series and with this AMD processor. Well I should tell all the performance of my processor in a arranged manner.
My laptop is provided with Windows Vista home basic 32 bit , but my laptop is 64 bit. I have compared my laptop with my friends one which is with intel core 2 duo processor. Now there are so many bench markings and ratings on these two processors , but my experience says those all are very deceptive. Well my friend's laptop is with windows xp. So when i first time compared mine with my friend's and saw that my friends laptop is pity fast than mine. Then my thought was that windows vista is better than xp , but...

Again this op is more a upgrade guide than a review, it has some cautions on piecing together a computer system and some procedures to undertake. Don't blame me if it goes wrong, you do anything at your own risk without liability to me. Good luck..

Budgets. The bane of student life, you need money for beer, the rest for food and general bills, then crunch time comes. Your computer dies and you need a new one fast but what do you do?
